Heritage Hall baseball coming on strong
BY RYAN ABER
raber@opubco.com
Heritage Hall’s baseball team made the semifinals last year and had most of its starters returning.
But an ambitious schedule and some uneven performances at the plate early in the season led to an under .500 record going into last weekend’s I-40 Classic.
But the Chargers put it all together, beating Class B No. 4 Lookeba-Sickles, Bethany, Class 4A No. 6 Weatherford and No. 2 Anadarko to win the tournament.
The Chargers (12-9) did it with four complete-game performances, including junior Tyler Huber’s no-hitter in a 4-3 win over Lookeba-Sickles.
Chad Nelson nearly no-hit Weatherford, allowing just a bloop single in a 3-2 win.
Freshman Ryan Huber got the win in an 8-2 victory over Bethany and Nathan Bowker went the distance against Anadarko in a 5-4 championship-game win.
“Our pitching has been strong all year but we’re just now starting to swing the bats as well,” Heritage Hall coach Pat Wasson said.
Among those bats coming on strong is Barry J. Sanders, who started in a bit of a slump but has heated up lately.
The Chargers are scheduled to play at Casady at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Taylor Hawkins has huge day for Carl Albert
BY RYAN ABER
raber@opubco.com
Monday, it was Gavin LaValley coming up big for Carl Albert against Chickasha.
Tuesday, it was Taylor Hawkins’ turn.
The Oklahoma signee was 4 for 4 with 3 home runs and 8 RBIs in the Titans’ 16-0 win.
Alex Polston, an Oklahoma State signee, added a grand slam as Carl Albert bounced back from Monday night’s loss to Shawnee.
Class 5A No. 2 Carl Albert improved to 4-0 in District 5A-2 play. The Titans step outside of district play Friday when they play at No. 4 Guthrie at 4 p.m.
Carl Albert’s LaValley homers four times Monday
BY RYAN ABER
raber@opubco.com
Carl Albert’s Gavin LaValley had a big day at the plate Monday.
The sophomore homered three times in a 15-4 win over Chickasha, then belted another in his first at bat against Shawnee in the nightcap.
The Titans dropped the second game 3-1.
LaValley had five RBIs in the opening win, while Taylor Hawkins and Alex Polston also added home runs.
Shawnee’s Tim Perkins limited the damage after LaValley’s second-inning home run tied the game 1-1. Perkins went the distance and the Wolves scored two in the fifth to pull out the win.
The loss was No. 3 Carl Albert’s first of the season. No. 4 Shawnee is 7-4.

Anadarko’s Tanner Dearman has already signed with Howard College, one of the top junior college baseball programs in the country, but he received a big-time Division I offer earlier this week when Wichita State came through.
Dearman hit .489 with 25 stolen bases and scored 66 runs as a junior.
It’s already been an eventful year for Dearman, who was a key piece in the Warriors’ run to the Class 3A football title.
Dearman had 403 receiving yardsm 199 rushing yards, 45 tackles and nine interceptions as a senior.
Anadarko is currently No. 2 in the OKRankings.com Class 4A baseball coaches rankings.
Edmond Santa Fe’s Ty Hensley wows in Arizona
BY RYAN ABER
raber@opubco.com
Edmond Santa Fe senior right-hander Ty Hensley started the team’s Spring Break trip to Arizona off with a bang Monday night.
Hensley threw five no-hit innings, striking out 13 as the Wolves beat Apollo (Ariz.) 11-0.
With spring training also going in in Arizona, it gave many big league teams a chance to see Hensley up close. More than 40 scouts and even a few general managers took in Hensley’s performance.
He also impressed at the plate, with a solo home run and another hit.
Hensley is signed with Ole Miss but is expected to be an early draft pick this summer.
