Altus: Championship swimming photos…

By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com

The good times continue to roll for the Altus boys swimming team. From the responses I’ve had in the ol’ inbox, it’s like the entire town was at the Aquatic Center at Oklahoma City Community College last weekend in support of their Bulldogs.

Here are some photos from Saturday. The first one is the 400 Free Relay squad of Brady George, Daniel Robbins, Drew Thomas and Michael Rogers (don’t know why it cropped funny). The second one is just the boys celebrating their title.

Altus: Able to beat weather, Bixby for title…

By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com

Here is what I originally wrote after the Bishop McGuinness girls portion of my Class 5A state championship swimming story:

In contrast, Altus edged out defending champion Bixby in an exciting boys race to claim its first championship.

Drew Thomas won the 50 free and was a part of both relay victories to lead the way for Altus.

The Spartans and Bulldogs were engaged in a great back-and-forth battle all throughout the competition.

The two teams were expected to be the top squads in Class 5A, and they showed why.

Winning the two relays proved to be crucial to Altus’ success, and the Bulldogs and their supporters had every reason to celebrate.

The Altus girls didn’t do too bad, either, as Lilli Thomas won two individual titles.

And here is what we’re told to me by Altus resident Danny Robbins:

“Our team won despite not having a pool to practice in for 11 days due to the huge ice storm that occurred on January 25th which kept our pool closed until February 8th. We don’t have a school pool. We share the pool with the City of Altus which restricts the amount of pool time our swimmers get to practice anyway. Throw in the ice storm and it is truly a miracle that we were able to win.”

Altus impressed many coaches early in the season, and that’s why I knew it would be a two-team race between Altus and Bixby. And on championship Saturday, Altus brought the goods.

Having trouble getting the photos from Robbins to show up, but I’m working on it.

Wrestling: Dual State seeding issue settled

Colleague Ryan Aber is attending the OSSAA Board Meeting today. One of the items on the agenda was a dispute over seeding in the Class 5A Dual State tournament. Altus coach Nick Williams had argued he was unable to vote in a recent coach’s poll because his power was knocked out in the recent round of ice storms that hit central and southwest Oklahoma. The missed vote dropped Altus from the two seed to the third seed. The OSSAA ruled the seeding would not be changed. Harrah will be seeded second and Altus third.
