Ada vs. Carl Albert Capsule…
By Robert Przybylo

Ada (4-3) at Carl Albert (5-2)
When: 7:30 p.m. Thursday
Where: Jim Harris Field, CA
Ada
Why the Cougars can win: Because after a blowout loss to Ardmore, Ada has actually fared pretty well. The other two defeats are against Guthrie and McAlester, a combined 13-1. Ada has done a great job of winning the games it’s supposed to. Can it win one it’s not supposed to?
Carl Albert (L- Booker T.; W – Ardmore; W – Duncan; W- Western Heights; W – El Reno; W – Southeast; L – Guthrie)
Why the Titans can win: Because arguably no team is happier about playing on a short week than Gary Rose’s club. This group is anxious to get back out there after last week. The nerves shouldn’t be an issue this week and the focus will definitely be there.
Key matchup: Taylor Hawkins vs. Ada defense. Though I expect Kenton Whittington to get a lot more than 11 carries in this game, think this is huge for the psyche of Hawkins. He needs to rebound, and the team needs to see he can be the leader the rest of the way.
The pick: Carl Albert 31, Ada 12. At the friendly confines of Harris Field, the Death Squad defense allows the offense to relax with some big turnovers.
Boneman’s Carl Albert prediction record: 6-1.
Game preview: Ada at Southeast
Ada (1-2) at Southeast (3-0)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: C.B. Speegle Stadium
Last week: Ada got its first win, 63-6 over US Grant. Southeast stayed unbeaten with a 31-6 win over Capitol Hill.
Why Ada could win: Southeast hasn’t faced a team that can run the ball the way Ada can, led by Nathan Blakely at 289 yards through three games. Yes, Ada has lost twice, but those losses were to a pair of top 10 teams, Ardmore and McAlester. So the 1-2 record shouldn’t suggest that this team is a slouch.
Why SE could win: This team is playing with as much confidence as they’ve had in these players’ careers. Jay Gogue keeps the offense moving with his rushing ability, and the defense has been solid from the start. This team is looking to make some noise in this district, and this would be a good opportunity to get people to take notice.
Key matchup: Southeast defensive front vs. Ada run game. Ada doesn’t like to throw the ball much, so if Southeast can slow the rushing attack, it forces the Cougars into a type of game they don’t want to play. But if Ada moves the ball on the ground, it falls right into their game plan.
The pick: Ada 34, Southeast 27. I’m not completely counting Southeast out of this one, but I think Ada will have too much size and depth for the Spartans.

Melton picks up win for Panthers
If Putnam City North has a chance at repeating as boys tennis champions, it will need a big outing from No. 2 singles player Kole Melton.
The Panthers got that this weekend as Melton won the championship at the BancFirst Tournament in Duncan.
Paced by Melton and Chris Haworth’s championships, the Panthers tied with Jenks for the team title. The No. 1 doubles team of Wil Rodwell and Brian Diefenderfer placed second. Jenks earned both of the doubles championships.
Duncan earns tennis title
If the Duncan girls were in any other class, the Demons would be contenders for the state title. But in Class 5A with Bishop McGuinness, it’s an uphill battle.
However, that doesn’t mean Duncan has stopped competing as the girls won three of the four titles and the team title at the BancFirst Tournament at Duncan this weekend.
Senior Melanie Barnes earned the No. 1 singles title while Duncan also earned championships at both of the doubles positions.
The No. 1 doubles team of Taylor Spradlin and Kate LeValley are now 21-2 this year. Duncan played Jenks in all four finals and the Trojans placed second.

Boys tennis: Ed North wins title without an individual winner…
By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com
Some people don’t understand my love of tennis. After back-to-back days at the Heritage Hall Tournament of Champions and all the great matches I saw…that’s why I love tennis.
I would have loved to have taken somebody who has never been there and have them watch all the terrific matches this weekend with me.
The boys was incredibly close and won by Edmond North. Now it’s not that nuts to think the Huskies could win, but it is kinda weird for them to win without earning one of the four titles.
It was balance and consistency that got the job done. Nobody placed higher than second or lower than third, tremendous TEAM effort.
Team scoring
1. Edmond North 26; *2. Edmond Memorial 25; 3. Union 25; 4. Putnam North 22; 5. Metro Christian 18; 6. Heritage Hall 16; 7. Carl Albert 9; 8. Ada 7.
* Memorial wins head-to-head tie-breaker for second
No 1 Singles: Chris Haworth, PCN, def. Logon Collins, Union, 6-3, 6-4
Phenomenal match, expected nothing less. Haworth makes you bring your best game. Because if you don’t, you’re hitting the showers early.
Collins, a Marquette signee, fought back and showed a lot of heart in this one. I don’t want to say I counted him out early in the second set, but…yeah, I counted him out.
The seventh game of the second set (tied 3-3) was incredible. I’m not sure how many deuces it went to (at least seven) before Haworth pulled it out.
Look for a video with Haworth on NewsOK on Sunday or Monday.
Third: Nate Roper, EN; Fourth: Jason Proctor, MC; Fifth: Austin Manger, CA; 6. Bryce Merritt, EM; 7. Jonathan Borsky, HH; 8. Robert Jackson, Ada.
No. 2 Singles: Andre Tardio, Union, def. Eric Olson, EN, 6-2, 6-4
A three seed gets the win. Tardio looked real dominant in this one though Olson gave a real good effort there in the second set.
Olson is a real steady player for the Huskies but not too surprising because the Redskins are extremely talented in the singles’ positions.
Third: Brandon Cohlmia, HH; Fourth: Kole Melton, PCN; Fifth: Memorial; Sixth: MC; Seventh: Ada; Eighth: CA.
No 1 Doubles: Truit Gray-Gavin Dubberstein, EM, def. Brian Diefenderfer-Wil Rodwell, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3
The final match of the tournament, and it was everything you would want it to be. Each team’s semifinals match was sensational, so you knew the finals were going to be.
Memorial coach Randy Mays has done a tremendous job with this team, and I think the Bulldogs have rightfully put themselves in the 6A conversation.
Third: Edmond North; Fourth: Metro Christian; Fifth: Heritage Hall; Sixth: Union; Seventh: Ada; Eighth: Carl Albert.
No. 2 Doubles: Bowen Xu-Omar Karim, EM, def. Alex Mathieson-Baylor Spring, EN, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2
Another three-set marathon, and another Memorial victory. I admit to not getting to see too much of this as it was going at the same time as the No. 1 singles final.
But I did catch up with Xu after the match and can see the sense of relief/happiness in his face. Definitely sore, that’s for sure. Edlam in any sport is fun and this was no different.
Third: Union; Fourth: Metro Christian; Fifth: Heritage Hall; Sixth: Ada; Seventh: Carl Albert; Eighth: PC North.
Great stuff, hope you had a chance to get out there. The Class 6A boys race is going to be extremely intense next month at the state tournament.
Swimming: Suburban conference results…
By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com
Believe it or not, there are other conferences than the Mid-State and Metro. Special thanks to Harrah coach Guy Worth for all the results.
In fact, let’s start with a note from Worth on the event:
Thought you might be able to use these results. The Harrah girls won their 9th consecutive team championship and the Harrah boys won their 10th consecutive team championship. Kayte Jasper from Carl Albert was the girl’s MVP and Isaac McKnight from Chickasha was the boy’s MVP. Isaac set three conference records. He swam a 21.96 in the lead leg of the 200 free relay. I believe that is one of the top two fastest times in the state in that event.
***
Harrah won 16 of the 22 events while I don’t have anything new to add about McKnight. He put Chickasha swimming on the map, and he’s only getting better. He’s terrific.
The other thing that stands out is the Deer Creek boys. Typ Whinnery, Logan Testi, Slater Pennington make up a great trio of boys.
Good stuff all around, and here are all your results.
