Picks: First round of the playoffs

Ryan stayed in first place with another strong week despite missing on Tulsa Central, Ada and Bridge Creek. Jason was the only one to miss on his lock, losing out on Westmoore-Lawton.

Last week:
Ryan: 7-3, 1-0
Scott: 7-3, 1-0
Jason: 6-4, 0-1

Overall:
Ryan: 72-29, 9-1
Jason: 69-32, 7-3
Scott: 67-34, 8-2

Ryan
Midwest City 35, Westmoore 21
Owasso 21, Norman 17
Edmond North 21, Yukon 19
Tulsa East Central 32, Tulsa Washington 20
Tulsa Kelley 28, Coweta 14
Duncan 14, Ada 7
Glenpool 35, Piedmont 27
Harrah 21, McGuinness 20
Sequoyah Tahlequah 28, Berryhill 27
Lawton 21, Norman North 14
Lock of the week: Tulsa East Central over Tulsa Washington. East Central won the regular-season matchup at they’ll win again here as their defense slows down the Hornets while their offense continues to roll.

Jason
Midwest City 31, Westmoore 24
Owasso 21, Norman 14
Edmond North 27, Yukon 14
Tulsa East Central 23, Tulsa Washington 14
Coweta 27, Tulsa Kelley 21
Duncan 24, Ada 14
Glenpool 31, Piedmont 17
McGuinness 17, Harrah 13
Sequoyah Tahlequah 35, Berryhill 24
Lawton 31, Norman North 17
Lock of the week: Edmond North over Yukon. Yes, Yukon is fired up because of the way last year’s game ended. But that won’t be enough to make up for the Huskies’ talent. Edmond North wins and moves to a showdown at Tulsa Union.

Scott
Midwest City 35, Westmoore 21
Owasso 28, Norman 17
Yukon 21, Edmond North 20
Tulsa East Central 35, Tulsa Washington 24
Tulsa Kelley 28, Coweta 24
Ada 28, Duncan 24
Glenpool 33, Piedmont 27
Harrah 21, McGuinness 17
Sequoyah Tahlequah 38, Berryhill 28
Lawton 28, Norman North 21
Lock of the Week: Owasso over Norman. Norman RB Donovan Roberts is a game-changer. If he’s able to play, it’s hard to imagine that he’ll be at full speed after the ankle injury he suffered last week. And the Tigers need him to be effective to keep the offense balanced. Without that X-factor, Owasso should put this one away.

Guthrie stays No. 1 in Class 5A

BY RYAN ABER
raber@opubco.com

In the six days now since the news broke that Guthrie would have to forfeit eight games, I’ve had discussions with plenty of people–coworkers, other high school writers, coaches–about how I would handle the Bluejays in the Class 5A rankings.

Before the ruling came down, Guthrie was No. 1. I left them No. 1 this week and imagine, barring something wild happening in the first round (assuming Guthrie isn’t reinstated), they’ll stay there next week. That will be my last rankings until after the playoffs are concluded.

It’s not a protest vote. Far from it. I considered what I’d seen from Guthrie this year and even with the exclusion of the player ruled ineligible, the Bluejays would not only be undefeated but would still be my pick to win 5A. Their defense is outstanding, especially in the front seven. Their offense is balanced and they get excellent play from the quarterback spot.

Not everyone agreed with that stance, though many did. In The Associated Press poll of writers and broadcasters, just two of eight voters left Guthrie off their ballots. The other six voted the Bluejays No. 1. Barry Lewis from the Tulsa World also left Guthrie atop Class 5A.

Here’s the complete top 10 in 5A:

1. Guthrie (1)#2-8*

2. Lawton MacArthur (2)#10-0

3. McAlester (3)#10-0

4. Carl Albert (4)#10-0*

5. Tulsa Kelley (5)#7-2

6. Tulsa East Central (7)#9-1

7. Pryor (6)#8-2

8. Coweta (9)#6-4

9. Duncan (NR)#7-3

10. Tulsa Central (NR)#8-2

*Guthrie forfeited eight games, including win over Carl Albert, pending Wednesday appeal.

Had I dropped Guthrie out and needed another team to fill my top 10, I would’ve gone with Ardmore (6-4) over Ada (7-3). That decision would’ve been easy. Not only did Ardmore beat Ada head to head, 28-0, on the road to start the season but they played Carl Albert and McAlester much closer than Ada did.

Picks: Week 10

With a chance to all but put the regular-season title away, Ryan flubbed it last week, going 6-4. Picking Edmond North and Wynnewood turned out to be the difference as both Scott and Jason came out on the right ride of those picks and pulled two games closer.

Last week:
Ryan: 6-4, 1-0
Jason: 8-2, 1-0
Scott: 8-2, 1-0

Overall:
Ryan: 65-26, 8-1
Jason: 63-28, 7-2
Scott: 60-31

McAlester 35, Tulsa Washington 20

Lock of the week: McAlester over Tulsa Washington. The Buffaloes offense has been just too good this season and the Hornets have struggled at times offensively themselves. McAlester wins the district title and remains undefeated.

Anadarko 45, Weatherford 14
Midwest City 42, Norman North 24
McAlester 24, Tulsa Washington 17
Blanchard 14, Bridge Creek 9
Lock of the week: Westmoore over Lawton. Westmoore’s defense has been
impressive all season  -  save for last week’s shootout with Mustang -
and I think the Jaguars can hold the Wolverines out of the endzone just
enough to come away with a win. A Westmoore win would likely throw the
2nd, 3rd and 4th playoff spots into a three-way tie between these teams
and Edmond North. All three teams are close in district points, so such
a scenario favors North, which ends its season with U.S. Grant.

Blanchard 12, Bridge Creek 8
Lock of the Week: Tulsa Union over Stillwater. Often, the loss of a key player at a key time — in this case, the suspension of RB Kendall Holmes, who was having a huge year – seems like it will be devastating for a team. And many times, it is. But many other cases, it becomes a unifying moment. This could have been the last poke the Redskins needed to wake up for a run to the state title.

All-Time wins list

I wrote today about Ada football and included the all-time wins list among state high school programs, according to sports historian David Porch as well as The Oklahoman archives. The order was correct but the wins number for Jenks and Thomas was not. Here is the correct list:

1. Ada                               745
2. Clinton                         743
3. Lawton                         736
4. Tulsa Washington     717
T5. Jenks                         642
T5. Thomas                     642

Edmond North boys tennis team dominant at Tournament of Champs

Team Scoring
1. Edmond North 32; 2. Metro Christian 23; 3. (tie) Heritage Hall, Putnam North 20. 5. Tulsa Union 18; 6. Tulsa Kelley 14; 7. Edmond Memorial 12; 8. Ada 9.

Championships
No. 1 singles: Haworth, PCN, def. Nate Roper, EN, 6-2, 6-0
No. 2 singles: Rodwell, PCN, def. Stein, EN, 7-5, 7-5
No. 1 doubles: Hager-Olsen, EN, def. Hays-Proctor, MC, 6-4, 6-3
No. 2 doubles: Lilley-Spring, EN, def. Cohlmia-Shear, HH, 6-2, 6-1

The battle lines have been drawn. Putnam City North has arguably the two best singles players in the state in Chris Haworth and Wil Rodwell. Edmond North has easily the deepest team of anybody in the state.

So when state comes around, might we get something eerily similar to what transpired this weekend? The Huskies playing for all four championships shows just how strong from top-to-bottom that group is.

Haworth bounced back beautifully after the loss in the USTA event Wednesday. If anything, I think that loss should have given him even more confidence. If he can contend on the world stage, he’s going to be able to certainly dictate play at the high school level.

The biggest statement, for me, would be from Metro Christian. The Patriots have had their fair share of solid players and tied for the championship last year. Would not shock me to see Patriots win it outright this time around.

All ‘n all, everything you would expect from this great tournament. A lot of quality play, and you can kinda gauge where the teams are at midway through the season.

SMQ: Alex Christensen powers Antlers to 31-28 victory…

By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com

Whoo, what a game Friday night at Deer Creek. Phenomenal atmosphere and two teams that gave us everything they have. Both Ada and Deer Creek have some problems, but it sure is not in the effort department.

A great back-and-forth battle with so much on the line. Glad I picked this game to attend, the final game at that Deer Creek Stadium. Massive renovations are in store that include a two-story (yay) press box.

Deer Creek 31, Ada 28

My biggest question entering the night was how Deer Creek was going to start. Bam, 20-yard run by Michael Coleman and it was 7-0 very quickly.

Anybody looking for an impressive aerial display certainly came to the wrong game. Though Deer Creek’s Alex Christensen and Ada’s Wyatt Robson made some timely throws, this was a game that belonged to the ground.

And it featured some big-time momentum shifts. The Antlers were up 17-6. Ada came out strong in the second half to take a 20-17 lead. Deer Creek responds with two more Christensen touchdowns to make it 31-20 midway through the fourth quarter.

The game ended in a big frenzy. Ada scored to make it 31-28 with 1:27 left. Then the onside kick. It sure looked like it didn’t go 10 yards. From my vantage point, I couldn’t tell if it hit a Deer Creek player first, though. If it did, the whole 10-yard mark means nothing.

All I know is that it seemed like maybe it was meant to be for Ada. But on the first play, Brennan Miyake picked it off and sealed the deal.

Boneman’s Breakdown

- What a game by Christensen. Every time you knew his number was being called, but it did not matter. Not. One. Bit. He’s a gamer that gives you everything he’s got. Finished with 242 yards and three touchdowns.

- Unsung hero was Shawn McLaws. It looked like a potential fake punt had blown up in Deer Creek’s face. However, he scrambled around and somehow booted a 34-yard punt. And his 44-yard field goal to make it 10-6 was big time. He didn’t get all of it (very low), but it cleared the cross bar. Big-time effort.

- Ada is going to be good, maybe great next year. Chase Bowker – junior. Robson – sophomore. Nathan Blakely – junior. Mason Girdley – sophomore. Look out for the Cougars in 2011.

- The press box situation at Deer Creek is certainly not ideal. But you know what it does? It gives you a great feeling of what the pulse of the crowd is. And that was a heckuva environment Friday.

- Up next: Ada (5-5) is at Lawton MacArthur (8-2) on Friday. Deer Creek (7-3) is at Ardmore (6-4) on Friday.

Ada vs. Deer Creek Capsule…

By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com

Ada (5-4) at Deer Creek (6-3)
When
: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where
: Deer Creek Stadium, Edmond (I will be there)

Ada
Why the Cougars can win
: You have to remember that this is the same team that took Guthrie to the absolute limit. Ada only lost that game 13-7. Ada also went the distance with an undefeated McAlester team (21-20). Don’t let the 55-12 loss to Carl Albert cloud that judgment.

Deer Creek (W- Piedmont; L – Shawnee; W – Tecumseh; L – Guthrie; W – Western Heights; W – El Reno; W – Southeast; W- Noble; L – Carl Albert)
Why the Antlers can win
: Because the inferiority complex is gone. This team has to believe that it belongs with 5A clubs like Ada. It took too long against Guthrie and Carl Albert. They’ve got one more chance.

Quote:

I won’t allow it to happen again (slow start). All of us seniors will do whatever we need to do. This is our night.” – QB Alex Christensen

Key matchup: You guessed it, Deer Creek start. I’ma hit you over the head with this because it stands out so much. Antlers need a good start, and they should be able to settle down.

The pick: Deer Creek 24, Ada 18. Think I’ma be seeing a good one. With so much at stake for both teams, cannot wait for this one. Christensen powers his way through the Ada defense for the game-winning touchdown.

Boneman’s Deer Creek prediction record: 9-0.
