Moore Player of the Week
Player of the Week: Moore Zone
Kaylan Haywood, Southmoore
Haywood led the SaberCats in scoring at the Edmond Open over the weekend, totaling 35 points. Her 13 points in the tourney opener against Edmond North and her 12 points in Saturday’s finale against Edmond Memorial were both team-highs. She managed double figures in every game and helped the SaberCats to a 69-20 win over Tulsa Central on Friday.

Brenna Burnett changes plans to play in Florida, now will attend OBU
Once bound for Florida, Brenna Burnett wound up in Shawnee.
Burnett originally signed with Palm Beach Atlantic to play her college basketball. However, after a coaching change at the school, the Dale standout elected to trade the Florida beaches for the familiarity of home.
Thursday, Burnett signed with Oklahoma Baptist University. The Class 2A All-State selection led Dale, coached by her father, Benny Burnett, to the state championship this past season. She averaged 16.7 points and 5.5 rebounds.
“When I visited (OBU) it felt like coming home,” Burnett said. “Especially because my dad coached me all that time. It means that he can still come and watch me play.”
Sabercats give new girls hoops coach talent to work with
Former Bethany girls basketball coach Derek Dorris has been hired to coach the Southmoore girls. The Southmoore job came open when Mark Harmon left to coach Hennessey. Harmon commuted from Kingfisher for two years while coaching the SaberCats and started the program.
The ’Cats were 7-19 last season, but had the biggest first-round upset in Class 6A with a 54-50 win over No. 6 Lawton.
Dorris, who coached standout Logan Martin at Bethany, will have talent to work with as four starters return and 12 players from last year’s varsity squad. Reagan Widener, Kayla Tucker and Kaylan Haywood all were honorable mention choices on the All-Mid-State Conference team.
Jags hire familiar face in Jarod Freeman
Westmoore has tabbed an alumnus to head up its baseball program. Jarod Freeman, a 2004 graduate who played for the Jaguars and later the University of Oklahoma, was approved by the school board this week. He replaces Kevin Winterrowd. Freeman spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Southmoore under Shannon Enfield. He was on the last Westmoore team to make the Class 6A state tournament.
Southmoore’s Sidney Cook getting national experience
Southmoore basketball player Sidney Cook has already had an impressive summer and it’s just mid-June. The junior made it to the final cut of the U-18 girls basketball national team. She was one of the 16 finalists.
Anyone who saw Cook play last season knows she’s big time. But making the final 16 in the nation means she has taken her game up a notch or two. She averaged 13.3 points and 7.4 rebounds. The 6-1 post also was part of the 27-player tryouts for the U-17 World Championship Team.
Super 30: And another thing … about Isaac Maselera
Isaac is one quiet kid. Doesn’t say a lot and will let you know that up front. Still, his athletic ability speaks volumes.
Maselera is one of the fastest football players in the state in any class. He’s been clocked at 4.39 in the 40. He’s committed to Oklahoma State as a defensive back, but he can obviously do a lot with the ball in his hands. Last year, he had one interception and he took it back for a touchdown 64 yards. He had three kickoff returns and took one of those back for a touchdown.
He probably could be a star running back. Thing is, Glenpool already has one of the best in Class 4A in Marco Nelson. Nelson, who also can flat out fly, ran for 1,324 yards and 17 touchdowns last year, averaging more than 10 yards per rush.
Wherever he plays, Maselera has the athleticism to do well. That’s why OSU offered him after essentially only seeing him play his sophomore season (he committed just three games into his junior year). But I’d try to get the ball to him. Good thing seem to happen when he has it.
Super 30: And another thing … about Trent Martin
There aren’t many players I’ll talk to this year who will be more driven than Trent Martin. The Jenks linebacker is seriously fired up about his upcoming senior season and he doesn’t mind saying that he thinks he has something to prove.
Already committed to Tulsa, Martin doesn’t have to worry about impressing college coaches. However, he feels like the six and a half games he missed last year after breaking his leg means he didn’t meet expectations. Of course, he knows there was nothing he could do about the injury or time missed. And the fact that he came back in time for the playoffs shows his determination and toughness.
Still, he told me that there was hype surrounding him before last season and he wants to prove that it was warranted attention.
I wouldn’t doubt him. He’s already in game-night mode.
Super 30: And another thing … about Steven Carpenter
In talking with Steven Carpenter, one thing was quickly obvious about the Jenks wide receiver — he’s very well spoken. He’s a great quote because he not only will thoroughly discuss a topic, but his sizeable vocabulary allows him to give interesting and insightful answers. No clichés from this kid.
As for football, he’s still awaiting his first offer, but he may not have to wait for long. He’s going to go to several college football camps this summer. He’s likely to make enough of an impression somewhere that an offer will come. If not, it will put his name up on the board as a player to watch during the season.
