Actually, Chris, if the three Edmond schools were still a single school, it would be almost three times as large as Jenks. It is a common misconception on the west side of the state that Jenks is massively larger than every other school. While it is third-largest in the state, there is a huge gap between Union at second and Jenks at third – enough of a gap to create a 6A school.

That being said, I don’t like running clocks, personally. My alma mater, PC West, is the beneficiary of running clocks numerous times a year, and I don’t think it teaches the players anything good. The coach at U.S. Grant has, or had, a policy of not accepting one because he wanted his players to get better. Now that’s teaching the players something of value.

Many of the 5A teams in OKC are 5A because the communities they serve divided a single school into two or more high schools, whereas schools like Jenks, Broken Arrow and Union still have a single high school. If Edmond still had a single high school it would be on par with Union and Jenks…ditto with Norman.

Ryan I think the running clock should be mandated. If the other team is up big by all means let the clock go. Now that is said I DO NOT WANT A MERCY RULE! What does that teach a young adult that if times are tough and your getting beat you can give up. No thats when you either let the starters finsh the game or put in some of the kids that dont get to play in everygame. Some of those kids will need the reps for when they do start. I will end with this. A good man named Jimmy V once said “Don’t give up Don’t ever give up” Thats what we need to teach are youth.

They are common. The question is whether or not they should be mandated.

The places I’ve been that do the running clock, once it starts, it doesn’t stop regardless of what the score becomes.

You guys need to check your facts. Running clocks in the second half are common. All that is needed is an agreement to do so by the head coachs.
Districts are established by enrollment. The largest 32 schools are 6A. The next 32 are 5A, etc.
My son’s team beat an opponent 84 to 6. Sounds awful but the score at the end of the first qtr was 48 to 0. The 5A schools from OKC are terrible. We have had home games against OKC schools who had no fans at these games. Sad,but true.

joe that part about more competitive districts sounds really great…but in reality it’s impossible…talent changes every year with graduation and promotion of students. Teams are just going to get beat by a lot of points sometimes…contrary to modern day psychology it won’t warp a child the rest of his life or ruin his self esteem…they will get over it and live thru it.

OSSAA needs to institute a mandatory running clock in the 2nd half if a team is up by 40 or more points. Also, looking at your list of teams that have had more than 50 points scored on them, maybe its time for the OSSAA to develop more competive districts based on more criteria than school enrollment.
