Del City point guard Brett Cannon broke his wrist after attempting a slam dunk in pregame warmups before Saturday's loss to Midwest City.

DEL CITY — Just minutes before Del City’s regular-season finale against rival Midwest City — and days before the team’s playoff opener — the Eagles lost their floor general.

Eagles’ starting point guard Brett Cannon, a sophomore, went up for a slam dunk during pregame warm-ups, missed and fell backward.

Cannon tried using his hands to break the fall, but broke his wrist on impact. He was taken to this hospital and didn’t play in the Eagles’ 68-55 loss to Midwest City.

Del City coach Tim Stogsdill said hours after the game that Cannon might need surgery, but that won’t be clear until the swelling goes down.

Ball handling duties were split between seniors A.J. Holland and Jamal Moseley, who aren’t used to playing point guard, and Del City found itself down 21-10 after the first quarter.

“It threw a little wrinkle in it,” Del City coach Tim Stogsdill said of his offense. “Especially when you’re playing a team like Midwest City that wants to pressure and trap. … With the way they play, they expose that. Brett does a good job handling the ball for us.”

Del City found its rhythm in the second quarter and was down by just four points at halftime.

But the Bombers came out with intensity to start the second half and retook control.

Sophomore Kesean Brown led Midwest City (18-5) with 18 points, and junior Cornell Neal added 16. Holland led Del City (17-6) with 16.

Midwest City hosts Norman North on Friday at 8 p.m. in a regional to open the Class 6A playoffs.

Bombers coach DeWayne Bradley said he’s happy his team won and, more importantly, didn’t suffer any injuries itself.

“Winning against your rival at their place is always big,” Bradley said. “But I’m really grateful we got out of here and everybody’s OK.”

Del City (17-6) wasn’t so fortunate. Stogsdill said point guard duties will continue to be split between Holland and Moseley as the No. 2 Eagles begin the Class 5A playoffs by hosting Durant in a regional on Friday at 8 p.m.

“The team is very confident we will make a run,” Stogsdill said. “Don’t count us out yet.”

Where were the refs…the penalty is a technical foul,,,the refs were probably regrouping from the girls game which is when the boys sneak their dunks in……….The coach needs to feel real dumb by not making his kids warm up instead of show off….I;d bet a lot that this kid has never dunked more than 3 times if any,,,,notice it says he came down backwards and tried to break his fall…Experienced dunkers know about hanging on the rim and vertical plain…..i bet the kid just flew at the rim missed the dunk his feet swung under the backboard then he let go heading toward the floor dam near head first…….where was the assistant coaches……cheering them on,,,trying to get the crowd into it……well the stoppage got a lot emotion from the del city fans saying ,,, what happend..this all could have been prevented ,,,,,,, from the refs ,,to the coach and last the player

Brett is doing well. He is in some pain, the meds having him in and out. We will see a specialist tomorrow to detrimine what is next. There’s a 25% chance of no surgery.

People who know what they are talking about don’t use words like “probably” and “I bet.”
I would appreciate people keeping their negative comments to themselves.

In a rivalry game like MWC and DC a lot of emotions are going through a lot of the kids. A lot of kids do try and sneak in a dunk before the refs get out, most of them don’t have a chance to do it during the game. A lot of them are just dunking straight off of adrenaline. If a kid were to come down on a ball and break an ankle would we have to outlaw the balls touching the floor. The assistants do monitor the pre game warm ups and keep the kids off the rim when the refs come out. They don’t mix it up with the crowd in any way. I don’t know if you put the blame on anybody. It was just a very unfortunate incident that happened. Brett is a great kid, and an outstanding sophomore. He will work his rear off to rehab back to 100% percent and will be better than ever at the start of next season. As far as the injury situation, we are not the only team that has injuries right at the moment. We will make the adjustments that are needed and the players we have left are pretty dam good. I guarantee the last thing anyone will want to do is count out the Eagles because of the loss of one player. If they do, then they have not watched many of our games. We usually will put 3 or 4 in double digits. We have been fortunate enough to be injury free all year. So we will take this hit and keep on rolling and we will be fighting to get to the state tourney. Brett Cannon will still play a huge role in that, just not in the form he is use to.

The accident was unfortunate, but lets remember that he’s only a sophomore. He made a sophomoric decision to try and dunk during warmups, most of them do. Big loss, but the team will survive. Lets not forget, this kid is a sophomore who already has the basketball savy of a D-1 point guard. Del City’s future looks pretty bright! He’ll be back!

Have enough guts to say what you really mean VANESSA in stead of using the word “people”…..i used “I bet” and the word “Probably”,,,,because as a coach AND PE teacher, I’ve seen kids come down wrong after attempting a dunk….I had to use those words SINCE I WASNT THERE ,,,,but Have seen kids break their arms/wrist/ankles..coming down wrong BEFOR ,,,,and this has been over a 31 year career…..if you have seen anything befor and now youre reading about a persons experience that you can remember seeing,,,,,,then THERE YOU HAVE,,,,,, this is exactly what im talking about and trust me lady,,,,I KNOW what im talking about….so … Some people who dont have the reference of remembering thing that they have seen befor need to shut up and keep THEIR mouth closed.,,,Im not here for you to ”apreciate” me.

thank you
