Ada High School Cougar football team was declared Mythical State Champion of the largest class of Oklahoma football during the unusual year of 1954. Ada was the only undefeated team that year. There is a plaque in the Ada High School trophy area signed by the OSSAA evidencing that fact. Ada High has 19 State Champion trophies but does not count the year 1954. Muskogee had a tie and Ardmore had one defeat. That one defeat was to Ada 20-7. Ray Soldan and the Daily Oklahoman declared Ada as 1954 State Champion.

I have been doing very extensive research on Tipton football and Tipton was only one of the few teams that were still in a district, other schools formed conferences in 54. However, according to most people’s records we weren’t considered District Champs even though we beat everyone in our district that year and probably would have won state. Nevertheless, we will never know because we never had the playoffs in 54. Such a disappointment!

wilburton was 9-0-1 that year too, i believe only tying poteau, there was a future afl player(texans/chiefs) and a o-state cowboy on that team

MWC was a powerhouse during those times. Brewster Hobby, Clendon Thomas. Tulsa Union and Jenks weren’t even heard of.
