Edmond Santa Fe rolls Edmond Memorial; I was wrong

EDMOND — I can admit when I’m wrong, and I was wrong big time about 2011’s first edition of Edlam.
Some of you Edmond Santa Fe Wolves have reminded me of just how wrong I was, to which I say: Yep, so go ahead and give it to me. I deserve it.
It was an electric atmosphere at Wantland Stadium on Friday night, and I had a blast covering the Wolves’ 31-6 win. The fans are what make covering sports so much fun, and it is that much more fun when the fans are as passionate as the Edmond Santa Fe fans clearly are.
And they certainly have a right to be fired up after Friday’s win. Sophomore QB Justice Hansen looks like a star in the making. The Wolves’ defensive line, led by NCAA Division I recruit Michael Onuoha, is dynamite.
The big Edlam win, which was the Wolves’ first win over either of their in-town rivals in two years, comes on the heels of last week’s 9-0 half-game scrimmage win over Jenks.
“It was the greatest feeling of all time,” junior receiver Dale Jefferson said of topping Edmond Memorial. “That and the Jenks scrimmage, that’s got us pumped up for this season.”
Next week’s game at Yukon will be big for the Wolves. If they can go in and beat quarterback Corben Jones and the Millers, who topped Mustang 44-31 on Friday, the sky’s the limit for this team.
And to think the Wolves were 1-9 last season. It’s hard to believe, isn’t it?
It is just one game, and one scrimmage. And the Wolves certainly weren’t perfect on Friday, as coach Lance Manning pointed out.
“It’s a good first win for us,” Manning said. “As a coach, you look at it and say, ‘I’m proud of the guys. We played hard.’
“But we made a lot of mistakes. We’ve got a lot to work on next week.”
In the meantime, enjoy the win, Wolves fans. And give me all the (hopefully good-natured) ribbing you want.
