Southeast focused on defense, fun

Southeast quarterback Micah Hunter says the Spartans are having more fun this year and hope it will translate in to success.
As they try to improve on last year’s three-win season, the Southeast Spartans are working hard on defense, and they’re enjoying themselves while they do it.
With some experienced linemen and linebackers, as well as a speedy secondary, the Spartans will count on the defense to control games, especially early in the season.
Coach Michael Branch’s squad has a pair of returning linebackers, Gumaro Murphy and Ray Douglass, playing behind a defensive line that includes Michael Holder and Miguel Uribe.
“We’ve got a pretty good defense,” Uribe said. “I would say the defense is a little ahead of the offense right now. We have a lot of people with speed and talent.”
And that defense is making for some fun times on the field, says Micah Hunter.
“We’re having a lot more fun this year,” he said. “We’re not just out here practicing. We’re enjoying it. The scrimmage was fun. We were flying around, hitting people in the mouth and everybody had fun with it.”
Hunter has gained valuable experience playing quarterback. Now a junior, he has a good core of talented players around him and simply hopes to run the show efficiently.
“We could be pretty good,” Hunter said. “We have a lot of talent, a lot of speed and height. We look pretty strong. We’re pretty balanced. We have a strong running attack and good receivers. I plan on giving the receivers some good throws this year. I’ve had this offensive line with me since I came in as a freshman. I trust them.”
NOTE: Read more of my interview with Micah Hunter in Friday’s edition of The Oklahoman, which will include area-specific special sections for each of the metro area’s circulation zones, providing information on all of the city’s high school football teams. Our statewide season preview will be in Sunday’s Oklahoman.
