Can Midwest City win a 6A title?
The Oklahoman‘s high school sports writer Ryan Aber answered questions from readers in today’s Power Lunch, and was asked about Midwest City’s ability to compete with Jenks and Union in 6A in 2011.
Here was Aber’s answer:
They will be very good once again. Is that enough to compete at the level of Jenks or Union? I don’t think they’re quite there. They’ve got a very good defense, especially in the secondary, and a great back in James Flanders but will need big-time play from whichever QB wins the job to be able to challenge for a spot in the title game.

Simple answer: NO! 
But it is true, for them to compete, a solid QB is needed. If you are one dimensional, the great teams will stop it and double dare you to pass. I just dont see someone knocking off the big boys…yet.
The Bombers will do it this season. I think that while Jenks and Union received zero punishment for their cheating ways, they are now under an even bigger microscope and are going to be declining for a while here while the under the table antics are more closely watched. It only took Jenks 6 seasons to burn out and ” get tired of winning” and their program was on rebuild for a few years ( referring to the 2002- 2003 seasons), while Midwest City didn’t face anything but winning seasons for close to 50 straight years. Jenks and Union have been great for the last 20 years. But Midwest City has been great for the vast majority of their existence without the need to cheat, have 3000-5000 kids to pick from, a weak district, cheating refs, multi million dollar facilities, and OSSAA immunity to break whatever rule they feel like. The Bombers were winning years before anyone ever heard of Jenks or Union, they will still be winning after everybody forgets the 2 big east teams exist. I predict Jenks falls to Midwest City in the Semi finals, and Union falls to them in the state title game…
That being said, I’m anxious to get the season started!!
Tired old comments goB, and some real outlandish and silly ones to boot. You can do better, and MWC deserves better. Union runs a clean program – a class act of coaches and kids, has already been under the microscope from multiple angles. Jenks paid their dues, although they haven’t changed their attitude much (broad brush I know, but overall pretty arrogant group, but I guess the trophy case backs it up in their mind). I’ve watched the westside powers de jour every year go and face one or the other of those programs and just be overwhelmed. The closest was Lawton last year, but that magnifies the intangible that you can’t define, but its absolute – refusing to lose. Union had several games that they were substantially behind in – Bartlesville, BA, that Jenks final among others – and they REFUSED to lose, in fact always “knew” they’d win. How do you build that in a program? Secondly, why MWC or any other program east or west won’t do it – most every year you have to get through BOTH teams to the gold, often in back-to-back weeks, and that will take the football gods to intervene. Some day it will happen, statistics just say it will, but only a program that has absolutely no weak links, great coaching, and limited injuries (and probably help from someone to sneak up on one of them in the first round –Sapulpa did it to Jenks here a few years ago). Oh, and by the way, add BTW to the list next year – they’ll be TOUGH with coach Hall at the helm, along with Bixby, a developing program with a past Jenks O-coordinator at the helm – alot like Mustang, and always the extremely talented but underwhelming BA and Owasso that can sneak up on occasion. Another interesting thing to watch – Union was the seminary after last year, sent coaches all over the state, including 6A Norman North and Muskogee; could be re-emerging programs there as well.
I seriously can’t believe that you Bombers are whining about the OSSAA not taking action against Jenks when you guys have been recruiting for years on every sport! Why do you think your wrestling program fell so hard. Your coach recruited, used the kids up & then left. Quit whining & suck it up. Either you can play with the big boys or you can’t.
If someone beats Jenks this year they deserve the state title. They are loaded with D1 players. I am impressed with Unions QB and with all the kids they have, they will be tough again. This is what Jenks got as their own punishment:(1) Lost silver runner-up trophy, (2) Lost spring ball, (3) the head coach lost lots ofbonus money, (4)Head coach had to stay away from all football activities, (5) two assistants could not coach for a year, (6) one player had to sit out a year. The punishment only ended when the OSSAA said they meet the requirements. Please do not say Jenks was not punished.
Punishment would be banning the program from the postseason for a few years. Punishment would be the school system growing a spine and firing their coach who brought a black eye to the school. Other coaches got caught, they lost their jobs, their schools got wins revoked THAT SAME YEAR and had to miss the playoffs. Jenks didn’t get punished. They just got a few people ragging on them… Embarrassed maybe. But their arrogance was more or less them trying to get used to people NOT kissing their posterior every waking minute. They try to act like they’re the victims. I have never been convinced that Jenks is anything but a one trick pony anyway. Why won’t they play Springdale anymore?? Oh that’s right, they got the score ran up on them.. so bad in fact they quit at halftime and ran off with their tail between their legs, refusing to finish the game. Way to represent the state there.
Didn’t the Bombers beat Springdale in a 7 on 7 drill this last summer? ( I predict Jenks bandwagon fans jump on here with lame excuses for that thumping within one day of this posting)
And who exactly did MWC recruit? I would love to hear it….Were you there witnessing the entire recruiting meeting with the players and coaches???? Call and report it to the OSSAA. Maybe they can ” take spring ball away” and tell our coach he can be an overpaid recess monitor like Trimble was and maybe we can still try to take steps around the rules and act like we don’t have to tell people, even though, by law, the Open Records Act says we have a right to that information. Trimble should be banned from coaching for life. Funny how the only people who disagree are FROM Jenks.
I agree with the above poster. The OSSAA did the littlest they could to make it look like they did something, but they wouldn’t dare do anything to jenks to make their bandwagon fans upset.

They had a wrestler from New Mexico living in Edmond going to Midwest City in 2008. They’ve recruited a football player/heavyweight from Choctaw. It’s been going on since at least the 70′s. Where have you been? Ask anyone around you, even your best Bomber Alumini. And Mr. Shakley knew all about it and did nothing just like he did nothing about Jenks. Broken Arrow and Tulsa Union contested their 2008 wrestling state title because one of the Bomber coaches actually pulled another wrestler off of a MWC kid b/c he thought he was hurting him. That wrestler was from another school too.
To Bombersrecruit, the Springdale school that Jenks lost to does not exist anymore. That was its last year in existence.

I know Jenks people are delusional…. but still… Rumor has it that jenks players are still buried under that stadium after getting buried so badly.. or maybe they’re just afraid to come out because a springdale player might spot them.
Looking at all of these comments, I can only think of one thing. I am from the Tulsa area, and I think it’s unfair that Jenks and Union have so many kids to chose from. No wonder one of them always wins 6A football championships! If Midwest City/Del City/Carl Albert in the MidDel district would combine, you would probably see a different result. Shame on the Jenks and Union districts as well as the OSSAA for not splitting these two massive districts up, much like all of the metro OKC districts do (Norman, Moore, Edmond, MidDel). SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!
Yep, and if all the OKC and Tulsa schools combined . . . same old arguments KDT- the other side of excellence is always jealousy. When Broken Arrow (the largest by far) starts winning year after year, come back with your argument. Going back to the question, particularly after last night’s scrimmage, the answer is no, they nor any other. It will be Jenks or Union (and most likely both in the finals again) this year. May not like it, may want to justify it any other way, but none of that will change the facts … again. 5A looks fun.
No one made Edmond or Norman or any school break up into different schools!!!! Do not tell Jenks and Union what to do. What do you want the OSSAA to do, spot the other teams a touchdown before each game? Jenks is one of the best schools academically in the state, they are a small town, why would they want to split? Should they split up just because you want them to, amazing! Union and BA have over a thousand more students then Jenks, but Jenks has to play them and does pretty well.

You can’t split jenks. After high school football, all they are is a po dunk hick town with wnba.
Since you asked Springdalewas; that Springdale team was amazing, I was at the game. A QB who was Parade player of the year and looked like it, one of the top I’ve ever seen over the MANY years I’ve watched OK HS football, including lots of Jenks over those years. Also a big time D1 receiver and a stud line. Underrated and a top 5 team – gold ball. Now remind me again, how many did they have before then and since? Plenty of room in their trophy cabinet I’m sure. I think they call bands like that “one hit wonders.” And they caught a Jenks team not quite up to snuff too – lost to Sapulpa in the first round of the playoffs. So quite an accomplishment for sure; lots of downtown diner chat in Springdale on the glory days. And what you ask again abbot Jenks without football and their 12 gold balls? How about 132 other state championships in other sports over the last 30 years. Yessir, it’s a BIG trophy case, you guys from Springdale come on over one day and take a look, you’ll be impressed and want to take some pictures back to show your friends. Other than sports? How about the most national merit scholars (“real smart” in Springdale) in the state most every year, the Malcolm Balridge Award for excellence, Miss America (alot like Miss Tyson Chicken, only not), great community with beautiful Riverwalk and downtown and they support the school and have for decades. Again, the question answered – Jenks this year will most likely again be in the finals, and Springdale will be building on their 6-5 record for … Remind me again, their 2nd gold ball? It’s the same old argument, but it’s a valid argument. The playing field is not level, thus creating an unfair advantage for the larger school districts. It’s very simple, either create a 7A and put the largest school districts in it, or split the largest school districts up creating a level playing field. CD, your sarcasm is unwarranted, there is no jealousy, there is only injustice. Again, I played football and graduated from Union, so I am coming from the winning side of the fence. Common Sense, try to grow some.
So many people just do not want to see Midwest City win the state championship huh? We just need to worry about week one Bomber people. Lets finish the first thirteen weeks, game by game, first and then worry about making travel plans to Stillwater. Lets beat Del City! Some of you will crenge when you read the below statement…

My Trojans got caught cheating, admitted to it, and guess what? ITS OVER!! I agree with above posters, Mid west city was awesome before Jenks was ever heard of, and have continued to be great for years, and years to come. I hope it comes down between Jenks and MWC for the state title. And I hope it is a classic that goes into multiple overtimes. We love great football up here, as does the mid del district.

No the bombers play a weak district schedule, and that hurts them every year. They need to add a power house team on there none district schedule to get ready for the post season. they are predictable and get out coached in every big game they play in. they play fastball, and when they play a physical team they have no chance.
jenks and Union have always played an incredibly weak schedule every year.. seems to work for them.. Then again, they get to cheat and get away with it, so that helps. Even though losing to springfield 44-0 and refusing to finish the game in the second half, Trimble wobbling to the team bus with his tail between his legs… and losing to a pitiful 5A team at home didn’t work well for them…
They don’t get outcoached. It took a perfect game, 3 early turnovers, home field advantage, and overly friendly officiating for Union to beat MWC a couple of years ago, and they were a hair away from beating Broken Arrow the next year, losing by only 7 points, and even had a few chances late in the game to score and didn’t pull through. MWC was having a rebound season that year from what i could see…
I would, however, like to play some out of state nationally ranked ball clubs, and schedule Carl Albert every year. Couldn’t hurt! Personally I would like to play De La Salle, Long Beach Poly, Evangel Christian, etc. I like how they scrimmage Union and CA.
Bombers will be salty this season. Like to see at least one of the Flanders boys get to taunt his brothers with a state title ring.
I have been waiting for a west side school to win state since the last time i saw Midwest City win state in 95. I keep up with mwc every year and I always hope it is the year they win it again but I know that know one will beat union or jenks. I have seen mwc, union, and jenks scrimmage this year and I truely believe if Midwest City doesnt let their gaurd down and lose to some stupid team along the way that they can make a game out of it when they play union or jenks this year. A game like lawton gave union last year except hopefully a different out come. Yes I’m a bomber fan but I am realistic and being honest

As long as the Bomber players don’t read the sports page like they did last year, they will be alright. They were way too jekyll and hyde last season.. need that Hyde presence….

Mr. Aber made a good point when he said QB is the position MWC needs to compete at that level. The Bombers have always relied so much on the run game that it makes it easy for the powerhouses from the east to load up to stop them.
MWC needs to find a solid passing game to go with Flanders and a solid D-Coordinator to create a game plan to stop the offenses that Jenks / Tulsa Union operate.
Kind of like the SEC in college…if a conference (or high schools) wants to stop the title from always going to the east side of the state…they will have to earn it by beating one of those powerhouses.
