@ All – I appreciate those who support Sterling Shepard, as his mother, I support him too. I won’t pretend to be a football expert, I just have a simple observation…we shouldn’t have to degrade anyone to promote our personal favorites. Thank you “HallofFame” for articulating your case clearly and respectfully. It’s nice to have a good fan like you in his corner.

At the beginning of this, I saw where someone wrote something very nice about Alex Christensen. I have to agree with what they said 100%! He was a major factor in the success Deer Creek had this year and, this year was the best season they’ve had since 2001. As a QB/RB he had over 1700 yards rushing, over 400 yards passing, over 100 yards receiving and 20 tackles. For a 235-pound kid, he is exceptionally quick with a 4.16 shuttle and, according to his coaches, a 4.5+ 40. He will be ranked No. 1 in the state at 215 pounds in wrestling. From the few games that I saw, he was a kid that played with his heart and was devoted to his team. I am glad to see that he received an All State honor.

Mustang Alumni your the idoit ty prestige coached at guthrie for years with one winning season never reaching the playoffs. Watkins not only lead us to state we won state in the 2nd year after ty was fired. oh we played btw and two players from their team just happen to be playing in the nfl. Look up the all-time team scoring leaders you’ll see Guthrie is 11th on that list from 2007 when Watkins lead Guthrie to their 2nd gold ball. So mustang alumni I know what Im talking about, we reach the semis almost every year

That is a pretty impressive resume Cox, but I can’t fault the kids in the smaller schools. I think Sterling could ball in any class in OK. I believe in the eye test and after watching these kids, sterling caught my eye just a little more than the others. But I wouldn’t be mad if Cobb or any others won. Sterling is just MY choice.

oh, i forgot about defense. Justin Schanbacher was named to the Ctb sports all star football team, on DEFense at linebacker. Any football recruiters out there want to impress their boss by bringing in a star that no ones heard of , jump on it . would be a shame to see him not competing on the next stage somewhere…… C’mon Sooners , Cowboys, anyone !!!

Player of the year.. that’s easy. Even though you probably never heard of him …. Justin Schanbacher, from Cherokee high school. Only scored 7 touchdowns. Oh, I mean in the State championship game that is…. Sad the kids from the small schools dont get the type, or hype, even if spectacular. my vote is for Justin, hands down.

pretty much me and hall of fame and if we wouldnt have ppl with the name guest i could sort you cowards out…well the competion of cobb was ways more impressive..glenpool, mcGuiness, millwood,broken bow, waganor and oolagah each of these teams he hit up for 120 or more thats whats getting me none of these other players played teams of this magnitude and DOMINATED like cobb did..u see what im sayin here? all these teams had 10 win seasons the first 3 have won or competed in state title games in their respective classes in the past 3 years..who else has that resume?

@ cox… Cobb is legit no doubt but I honestly have have cobb 4th on the list behind, shep, glidden, and brothers. My argument for Shep is that he is dynamic at the receiver spot, running the ball, kick/punt return, and on defense. not to mention he is the best qb on the team too. And argubly has the best hands on this list. no disrespect to cobb but he is a great runner and thats mainly it. I personally like a player that can take over a game anywhere on the field. Sterling Shepard does that. But Cobb is awesome and would love for OU to grab him.

Sterling Sheppard. Most versatile player in this class. He had over 30 td’s and remember he played moat of the season with Barry J Sanders, so unlike most of these guys he isn’t gonna get the look every play. Shep had 4 TD’s in the 2nd half of the year in the biggest game of the year, the state championship. He is the beat player in the state and deserts this honor more than anyone.

hs fb fan- you are an idiot, our coach in the past 6 years has lead us to State, semi’s and we dont miss the playoffs. He is a better coach than whoever is the coach at guthrie. Lead the state in offense every year. Whoever you are dont know what you are talking about.

I had the chance to watch him grow into the player he is because i was a senior when he was in 8th grade at Northeast high school, but as far as that game they have to play on espn i think it might turn ugly. Heritage Hall is not a good team they have 2 great athlets and a decent o-line so if barry and shep dont get the whip cracking it will easily be a blowout..ppl please stop talking about kentrell brothers he a DE/WR thats a joke in itself seriously that wont translate well into college football. 5A is a weak class except for tulsa washington they are the real deal

I could only imagine if Kentrell played for a small school. Duncan had one of the states best tackle, Guthie played Duncan the last two years and only had 5 sacks last year and 4 this year. He never came off the field and to the person who said he only had one good game. He led 5a in sacks the last 2 years and was 2nd in 08, there are the kids who are good one side or the other but not Mr. Brothers he was great on both. I only see one all-american on this list. I give Gliddens some props Guthrie had mustangs head coach for years and he produced one winning season (6-4). so he must be a pretty decent player

Shepard is the best player I have seen in a long time! Took over games when the gameplans were to stop him! No disrespect to David G who is awesome, but all you have to do is watch the speed, 38 in vertical and speed/elusiveness he displayed every game. He did everything Glidden did but won a championship. If you are still in denial watch the state championship game against Kingfisher and watch your mouth drop!

The comment Guest made about thugs is just a show of narrow minded stereotyping. ‘Thugs’ can come from Mustang, Edmond or anywhere. Your own view is just as narrow however. You see anyone outside of the metro school system as ‘priviledged’ and apparently not deserving even though they may have worked just has hard and overcome equal barriers to accomplish what they have. You yourself are guilty of stereotyping the very kids you attempt to champion by making your comment about them “not putting a gun to people like you and guest back taking yalls wallets”…..shame on you.

Metro schools are not exclusive to poor, poverty stricken, broken homes and kids who commit crimes. These issues exist in every public school and high school sports has helped save countless kids from following the wrong path.

ALL of these boys deserve every bit of the fruits of their labors. Their accomplishments should not be cheapened by claiming where they come from and what is/is not available to them makes one better or more deserving than another. The only thing that makes one better than the other is their own personal ability and determination.

All of these boys are very talented. And for those of you who go on and on about ‘you haven’t seen *** play’… well you cannot judge any of these players against each other fairly unless you have seen all of them play in all games.

So here we are, the majority of the comments here a matter of opinion, based on what is most familiar to you. (and some very overly emotional to the point of being insulting and negating your opinions entirely). One of you even hinting that the ‘computer guru’ (glidden, i’m guessing, from an article earlier this year), would rig the voting. Very laughable.

mr. glidden got hurt first quarter of the first playoff game . came back in with a very bad sprained ankle and still scored 2 touchdowns on one foot. Mustang lost by 8 points that night , If healthy mustang would of won by many more than that. Not crying over spilled milk. don’t think u should knock down an injured player. D Glide (David Glidden) is the only choice. Outstanding Offensive Player, Defensive Player, Special Teams Player. I’ve watched this young man since he was just a little boy. Has the Coordination, Concentration and Intelligence like no other athlete. Was invited last year to the McDonalds All American games and stood out against the best in the country. No one better.

ok “guest” we can all see you are the ignorant party in this convo dont pass judgement on these boys at douglass cuz you dont know any of them personally. everyone is not fortunate as you and mr.glidden to live in a sheltered community ok and most of you guys are glidden radicals but from all you guys accounts glidden is a real stand up kid in his community and i commend that but he s by far not the player of the year..class 6a was a real bust this year ppl automatically think bigger is better but not true i know at least 3 teams in 4a that would run 6a if u dont believe me just compare game footage from 4a and 6a you will see the difference its like sec vs mountain west 6a has no physicallity whats so ever and kentrell brothers had 1 great game against an under achieving carl albert ball club and all of a sudden he s a super star?? not in my book..so once again brings me back to mr.cobb he had 2 seasons in one do you understand me? he had almost a thousand rushing JUST IN THE PLAYOFFS and get this he never got over 20 carries on his 200+ yard tear..so anybody wanna change their votes?

Is this All State selection directly related to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All State team? I am eagerly anticipating that list as well. That being said,I believe that David Glidden is hands down the best athlete listed here. Had he not been injured and literally limping in between plays, the outcome in 6A would have landscaped a little differently than it did. My only regret now is that he will not be playing for Holgerson who did such a fine job with Welker, but I know that Glidden will still make quite an impact at OSU.

David Glidden. Can take over games. If healthy they prolly would of beaten Lawton Ike, but still him hobbling around was the best athlete on the field, and Lawton Ike is known for being very athletic. If he doesnt win this award someone needs to get there facts checked. Shepard is a great player too, but this award should go to mr.glidden. OSU i think got a big steal from everyone else. this kid has jets and the smarts. he interviews like a top end pro athlete as well.

The order in which the names were presented means NOTHING at all, except for the order in which we’re going to write about them.

Guest is right in saying Marcus Caddell and Donovan Roberts are getting a slew of other awards but just missed the cut for who we thought were the top 5 players in the area.

There are 25 spots on the all-state team, and through process of elimination, we’ve inadvertently given away 7 of them.

On Jan. 2, I’ll give you my ballot and then you can criticize me some more

I can agree with “Upfront” on the fact that winning the championship is a group effort and well worth the effort. Kentrell Brothers has been an exceptional athlete throughout his high school career in basketball, football, and track when called upon. He did not just come to the forefront this year. He is an athlete that also does very well academically. He works with the youth in his community and is a very humble young man. He will give you 100% on offense and defense. I won’t start quoting stats. We can all go on and on about each of these young men. They all have a unique story to tell and I wish them nothing but the best in the future.

All of the nominees are great players, but winning the state championship is a group effort. It is easier to look good if all your supporting players are good too. David Glidden has shone even while playing with a talent pool that is not nearly as deep as in years past. Through sheer determination, he took Mustang to the playoffs in a year I wasn’t sure they would go. They probably would have advanced on had he not been injured in the playoff game. He shone on defense, offense, punting, you name it. If you have spent much time watching him you understand why he is so special. He can make the impossible happen. He is not just a jock either. A-student, humble, works with special needs kids, mentors younger kids in his neighborhood, polite, a real leader. You should see him play basketball and baseball! All-around athlete.

This is all based on opinions. Each of the guys listed deserve special recognition; but when you have a computer wizard in the midst it is hard to keep the voting fair. So hands down we know who will get the most votes. My personal opinion is the All American.

David Glidden. Can play almost every position on the field,excellent student off the field. Humble, dedicated, caring, and responsible. One of the best true leaders I have ever seen in over 25 years of teaching. And on the football field, he is magic. I have seen him almost single-handedly win the game through sheer determination when others had given up. Teams KNOW what he can do, and they still can’t stop him. I have seen him so injured he can barely stand yet still catch a touchdown pass. This kid is the real deal. He will be OSU’s Sam Bradford.

im gonna be honest here this should be a 2 man race here AJ COBB AND STERLING SHEP. for one these guys showed up and showed out EVERY game and led the charge to state titles..not to mention that class 4A has the stiffest comp douglass took down elk city, oolagah, broken bow, and wagoner all in which except 1 aj cobb had over 200+ RUSHING if that isnt enough by itself oklahoma hs football voting is a conspiracy and shepard had a similar resume but his competion level cant hold a candle to cobbs but non the less he destroyed what was in front of him but when u look at all these other guys on the ballot they pretty much vanished in the playoffs when their teams needed them the most, nothin against these boys but thats just how it went down and last i agree marcus caddell should be on here it was cobb that did the swinging but caddell delivered the knockout blow in EVERYYYY close battle the trojans were in ..

No one understands how good Shepard is until you see him in person. Notice he is the first one on the list too. I think Bob would agree the most electric player I have seen. The catch you talked about going over 3 people to get…well Shepard had at least 1 of those each game if not more than 1. He simply is the best.

Gatorade player of the year or All-Americans is just a matter of opinions. There’s a Gatorade player of the year on the list & an All-American. How can the Gatorade player of year not be an All-American? How can the All-American not be the Gatorade player if the year? It’s just opinions.

Sterling Shepard. Down 14-0 at halftime in the state championship and their coach admits he put everything on that kid’s back. Result- 4 TDs & the championship. OSU coaches saw his do it & offered him immediately.

And who led 5A in rushing, by almost 600 yards more than the second place rusher? Alex Christensen. Who led 5A in rushing TD’s by 4 more than the second place rusher? Alex Christensen. Who led a team who had a losing record team last year to the quarterfinals this year, virtualy single-handedly? Alex Christensen. Who led the team to play the 5A champs (BTW) this year closer in the playoffs than any other team, including the runner-ups? Yep, Alex Christensen. Not flashy, just produced week in and out when you knew he was going to carry the ball, led his team, and they won. Not nearly the talent that Brothers had behind him at Guthrie, and I see you’ve pretty well covered each of the classifications, but really Bob?? You fumbled this one.

Everyone of these players are great players and represent Oklahoma very well. But the All-State player of the year should be David Glidden. No one did thing he did all year long, from returning kickoffs, punts, INT’s, and Receiving Touchdowns. He is a great player and Gatorade awarded him player of the year. Hands down David Glidden.

I think it’s Shepard or Cobb by far since they won state championships. Shepard would be my choice he completely dominated every team he faced and basically won his team the state title. Also, watching all of his interviews how great of a kid he comes off of. My favorite interview is after the state game when you tell he is so excited they won.
