Still pluggin’ away. Again, jumped at 3A-3.
Key game: Bethany at Newcastle.
Heritage Hall: First.
Bethany: Second with win. Third with loss.
Newcastle: Second with win. Third with loss.
Kingfisher: Fourth.
More easy ones. And this is actually between districts that will be playing each other:
DISTRICT 2A-1
Key Game: OCS at Tonkawa.
Watonga: First.
Hennessey: Second.
Tonkawa: Third with win. Fourth with loss.
OCS: Third with win. Fourth with loss.
DISTRICT 2A-2
Key Game: Crooked Oak at Christian Heritage.
Millwood: First.
Jones: Second.
Christian Heritage: Third with win. Fourth with loss.
Crooked Oak: Third with win. Fourth with loss.
Took me ALL DAY to do those three. Seriously, though, here is one that could get complicated. We all know Clinton is first in 4A-1. And if Elgin beats Elk City, Owls are second. But what if the Elks win? Ryan Aber and myself have both looked at this one.
UPDATED:
DISTRICT 4A-1
Key Games: Elk City at Elgin, McGuinness at Guymon.
Clinton: First.
Elgin: Second with win. Second with loss of 14 points or less and McGuinness win where McGuinness picks up 26 or less district points on Elgin. Third with loss and McGuinness loss. Third with loss and McGuinness win where Elgin loses by 14 points or less or McGuinness picks up 26 or less district points on Elgin. Fourth with loss of 15 points or more and McGuinness win where MicGuinness picks up 27 or more district points on Elgin.
McGuinness: Second with win and Elk City win where McGuinness picks up 27 or more district points on Elgin and loses 3 or less district points to Elk City. Third with Elgin win. Fourth with loss and Elk City win. Third with win and Elk City win where McGuinness picks up 27 or more district points on Elgin or loses 3 or less district points to Elk City. Fourth with win and Elk City win where McGuinness picks up 26 or less district points on Elgin and loses 4 or more district points to Elk City.
Elk City: Second with win and McGuinness loss. Second with win of 15 points or more and McGuinness win. Third with win and McGuinness win where Elk City wins by 14 points or less and gains 4 or more district points on McGuinness. Fourth with win of 14 points or less and McGuinness win where Elk City gains 3 or less district points on McGuinness. Fourth with loss.

SMQ: David Glidden, Mustang too much for Westmoore…
By Justin Hite
Welcome back to the Saturday Morning Quarterback…This edition: Mustang vs. Westmoore
What happened: As Saturday morning’s story might have told, David Glidden happened. Westmoore double-covered Glidden from most of the game, but there’s a reason the receiver is headed to Oklahoma State.
Westmoore’s offense just couldn’t get enough going to take any pressure off its defense. After multiple three-and-outs, the Jaguars were just too worn out defensively. The Jaguars also lost three players to injury. Running back Cody Feuerborn and Zach VanDyke both returned to the game after missing limited time, but receiver Daulton Craig, Westmoore’s best deep threat, was injured on his first catch and never returned. Coach Billy Langofrd said it might be a collarbone injury, but wasn’t sure.
Westmoore possessed the ball for nearly five more minutes that Mustang in the first half, but the Broncos showed just how explosive their offense can be. Mustang moved the ball well in the first half and the Jaguars gave points away.
“We have to stop killing ourselves and quit giving things away,” Westmoore coach Billy Langford said. “Make people earn it instead of giving it away. We’re working to do that and we are making progress still.”
In the second half, Mustang earned its points and Westmoore’s defense had worn out.
What it means: Nothing really. This whole season Westmoore has been a little bit of a surprise to Class 6A. We all knew that Mustang and Lawton would be the class of 6A-2, with Lawton a little ahead of the Broncos. We knew that Mustang could throw the ball, and they did against Westmoore. If anything, the Westmoore secondary might have proven it’s not a detriment to its front seven. Instead, it surprised Mustang — Glidden included — and showed it can be an asset to one of the best front sevens in Class 6A.
Mustang earned a playoff home game and Westmoore has all but clinched a playoff berth. There wasn’t a whole lot to learn from this one — other than the fact that both teams are just about where we thought.
Up next: Westmoore travels to Lawton for the season finale with a chance to secure the No. 3 seed in the state playoffs. Meanwhile, Mustang travels to Del City looking to close its season with six straight wins.
District scenarios around the corner…
By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com
This will be brief. Just want you to know Ryan Aber, Scott Wright and myself will be working tirelessly on district scenarios all this weekend.
I’m sure you know yours for your respective team, but this will be a good chance for you to see how it shapes up for everybody.
I love 5A-1. I volunteered to do that one. For those that don’t get the humor, here’s why I jumped at it:
Guthrie – first. Carl Albert -second. Deer Creek – Third with win, fourth with loss. Ada – Third with win, fourth with loss. Ada plays at Deer Creek (I’ll be there). Ah, that was a ‘tough’ one.
And then there is A-6 and Ryan is telling me that’s a killer of a scenario. We’ll try to get you these by Monday.
SMQ: Edmond North guts out Edlam win, 17-10…
By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com
I predicted 19-10. Guess 17-10 isn’t bad. Edlam was every bit what I expected it to be. Knew it would hard hitting. Knew it would competitive. Knew it would feature some mistakes as both teams have some flaws.
In other words, knew Edlam was going to live up to its billing. It did. Others may have not cared about the showdown, but a great crowd and the intensity that was shown by those kids tells me all I needed to know.
North 17, Santa Fe 10
Wow, did the Wolves come out firing. Especially the defense. North running back Jarion Tudman couldn’t do anything and put it on the ground.
Santa Fe had a 10-0 lead in the second quarter, but Edmond North kinda got its bearings together after a rough start.
Quarterback Travis Townsend bounced back after an uneven first half and got the offense moving. It was almost as if he needed to throw an interception to relax and find his groove.
And that he did. The Huskies have so many targets and that has become the biggest reason for their success. You can fire it to Troy Davis, Hunter Cleveland, DonQuay Hammons, Garrett Molinsky, Kyle Aschenbrenner, etc.
Townsend threw a couple of touchdown passes and let the defense do the rest. Santa Fe was hurt by an injury to Ryan Frazier in the third quarter. Ty Hensley also didn’t finish the game as Justice Hansen played down the stretch at quarterback.
Santa Fe never quit, but it didn’t have the firepower to pull off a late comeback. I kept thinking if Santa Fe would have scored, would coach Bruce Gowen go for 2 and the win like he did last year?
Boneman’s Breakdown
- Santa Fe wide receiver Dale Jefferson had a heckuva game. Big catch after big catch. Only a sophomore and definitely a name I will be watching in the future.
- All hail the defenses, especially on the ground. The teams combined for less than 70 yards rushing. Ryan Adams had a nice game for North. Brandon Reece and Quintin James each had an interception for Santa Fe. Physical game between rivals.
- Love what I saw from Hensley. He’s a gamer, if nothing else. Needed to come up with a big throw time and time again, and he would find Patrick Hinton or Jefferson time and time again.
- Penalties hurt the Wolves in the fourth quarter, especially an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that made a 4th-and-10 into a 4th-and-25 in the final minutes.
- Up next: North will try to clinch a playoff berth with a win at US Grant. Santa Fe closes its season against Putnam City.
SMQ: Marcus Caddell, Shon Bridges come up big for Douglass
Time for the Saturday Morning Quarterback to break down Douglass’ 20-18 win over Glenpool.
I was expecting a close one, but I wasn’t expecting 103 total rushing yards from Douglass. That would have spelled defeat in my opinion.
But Shon Bridges made a few great throws and Marcus Caddell made big play after big play, particularly the 76-yard kickoff return TD and three interceptions — two in the red zone. It was an unbelievably impressive performance, because the big plays came at the most needed times.
Glenpool didn’t help itself with some critical penalties at horrible times and interesting play calls — like the QB draw on fourth and 15 with 33 seconds left in the game.
Douglass sealed up the 4A-2 title and Glenpool will battle Harrah for the second spot next week.
Each of their opponents in the first round of the playoffs will be decided next week. There’s a tie for third place in 4A-1 between Elk City and McGuinness. Elgin and Elk City play each other next week, while McGuinness faces Guymon.
Douglass OL/DL Cayman Bundage left in the fourth quarter with what appeared to be a knee injury. Hopefully it’s not serious, because Bundage plays a crucial role on the line for the Trojans. I’ll check in with Alexander to see how Bundage is doing later in the week.
Douglass concludes its regular season with senior night against Cleveland, which will be big, because this is the group of kids who came in as freshmen when Willis Alexander became the coach.
Edlam: Santa Fe vs. North Capsule…
By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com
Edlam: Santa Fe (1-7) at North (3-5)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: UCO’s Wantland Stadium (I’ll be there)
Santa Fe (L- Memorial; L – Yukon; L – Midwest City; L – Westmoore; L – Lawton; L – Mustang; W – US Grant; L – Del City)
Why the Wolves can win: Because much like last year, Santa Fe is starting to find its groove late in the season. The defense has given up 14 points in the last two weeks, while quarterback Ty Hensley had made tremendous strides.
Quote:
This is Edlam. This is what we play for.” – wide receiver Patrick Hinton
North (L – Southmoore; W- Choctaw; L – Memorial; W – Del City; L – Mustang; L- Putnam City; W – Westmoore; L- Lawton)
Why the Huskies can win: Because the offense should give Santa Fe fits. The balance of the running game and passing game is incredibly tough to match. And the defense will be fired up after what happened at Lawton.
Quote:
This is our final shot. We weren’t able to beat Memorial but to beat Santa Fe two years in a row would be a nice way to end things.” – quarterback Travis Townsend
Key matchup: Santa Fe running game vs. North front seven. How do you stop a balanced offense? Don’t let them touch the ball. The Wolves have lot of running backs in their arsenal, and we should see them all.
The pick: Edmond North 19, Santa Fe 10. I can’t see a high-scoring game here, but I think the Huskies win pretty comfortably despite the low score.
Boneman’s Santa Fe prediction record: 7-1.
Boneman’s North prediction record: 5-3.
FMQ: Duo of Kameron Doolittle and Ry Huff get it done…
By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com
We’re still a long ways from Week 10 against Yukon, but my mind is already running wild with playoff scenario situations for Edmond Memorial.
Seriously, I’ve done at least like 10 different scenarios at this point. Maybe I should just wait until after Week 9, huh? It just feels right now Memorial could be the best team to not make the playoffs (Southmoore would have a good claim, too).
A lot can change in a week. And if you watched the Bulldogs against Norman North, you see why coach Justin Merideth has been so excited about his team the whole year.
Memorial 31, Norman North 14
Set the tone early. First play from scrimmage for Memorial was a nine-yard run by Kameron Doolittle. It announced, “I’m back. I’m a force and good luck stopping me.”
Doolittle actually wasn’t as big of a factor later in the game, but that first quarter was where he made his mark. The Bulldogs fed off that momentum and that offensive line was extremely pumped up.
But give a lot of credit to Ry Huff. A really good game plan by Merideth of using Doolittle early, and then countering with Huff for most of the the final three quarters.
Huff threw a couple of really nice passes, but what the combo does more than anything is give a defense too much to think about. Each can run and/or pass. And heck, we saw one play where Huff threw to Doolittle.
But the turning point of this game was early in the third quarter. Norman North forced a fumble on the first play and was trailing 10-7 with a chance to tie or take the lead.
The field goal was no good. Memorial goes 80 yards in 12 plays and takes a 17-7 lead, and there ya go.
North had Emilio Gatewood at QB at times. Found ways to get it to Daniel Davis and Raymond Demby. Real good scheme as well from Lance Manning, just kinda got caught in the fourth quarter.
Doolittle started the game with a 25-yard touchdown run and closed out the Bulldogs scoring on a 30-yarder. Huff rushed for one score and passed for another.
Boneman’s Breakdown
- Gavin Fouts is another unsung hero right now for Memorial. He’s been great since the loss of Cale Olbert. Not exactly flashy, but he’s not afraid to be a workhorse.
- Gatewood at QB really threw me for a loop. He’s such a dynamic talent that it wasn’t a horrible idea. Demby scored a 27-yard touchdown and those two continue to be a nice one-two punch.
- Still love the effort of Daniel Davis. I would rank him in my top 10 players of the season despite the Timberwolves’ record. He gave everything and has played both ways and shown what true leadership is.
- Huff you are owed a video. I lost track of where he was, and I panicked. Couldn’t find him, sorry.
- Memorial heads to Yukon next week. Ooh boy, should be a good one. We’ll know a lot more about what the Bulldogs need to do to advance by late Friday night. You can still seriously have four teams at 3-4 (Memorial, Choctaw, Putnam North, Norman North) as of Friday morning.
How so? Memorial loses to Yukon. Choctaw beats Yukon but loses to Putnam North. Norman North beats Midwest City. Putnam North beats Choctaw and Moore. Wow, don’t think all of those scenarios are going to happen but…yea, it’s possible.
- Look for a video with Doolittle on NewsOK on Friday.
Muskogee vs. Norman Capsule…
By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com
Muskogee (5-3) at Norman (7-1)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Harve Collins Field
Muskogee
Why the Roughers can win: Because any time you have a stud athlete like Victor Williams, ‘victor’-y is never out of the question. Muskogee has been one of those teams that beats who it’s supposed to. Is this a team it’s supposed to?
Norman (W – Nnorth; W – Moore; W – Del City; W – Sapulpa; W – Shawnee; W – Southmoore; W – PCWest; L – Broken Arrow)
Why the Tigers can win: Because they’re angry about last week. Especially running back Donovan Roberts. He played well last week but not up to his standards. He is going to put a lot of this game on his shoulders, which is normally a good thing.
Quote:
Muskogee is a dangerous team, but our kids believe in themselves. This is a big opportunity for us.” – coach Greg Nation
Key matchup: Williams vs. Norman defense. The Tigers forced BA’s Archie Bradley into some mistakes. They’re going to need to do the same thing in this one. Senior night should have that defense fired up.
The pick: Norman 42, Muskogee 27. IMO, this is actually a bigger game than the BA contest. Will they respond positively, and do they show they belong? The answer is yes to both questions for Norman.
Boneman’s Norman prediction record: 6-2.
Heritage Hall vs. Bethany Capsule…
By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@opubco.com
Heritage Hall (8-0) at Bethany (7-1)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: McFarland Park Stadium, SNU (NW 50th and Council)
Heritage (W – Casady; W – Clinton; W – Davis; W – Centennial; W- Tulsa NOAH; W – Newcastle; W – John Marshall; W – SeeWorth)
Why the Chargers can win: Because a lot has been said about the phenomenal skilled kids, but the lines on both sides have been just as dominant. There is a reason the holes are there. And if the offensive studs are not at full go (esp. Barry J. Sanders), the line will have to make up the difference.
Bethany
Why the Bronchos can win: Because this team has been waiting for this moment. It answered a lot of questions with the win against Kingfisher. Defense gives up less than 15 points per contest and there are a lot of playmakers on this team.
Key matchup: Heritage QBs vs. Bethany defense. Going with that road mentality. How will Cooper Cloud and Sterling Shepard fare on the road? Seriously, something to be said for not having gone on the road since Week 4. Not only that, but the last road challenge was Week 3 at Davis. Gonna have to show that composure that this year’s team has been known for.
The pick: Heritage Hall 31, Bethany 17. Biggest challenge of the year, but I think the Chargers gut out a tough win away from Pop Murray Field.
Boneman’s Heritage prediction record: 8-0.
