The US Youth Olympic girls volleyball team needed to go the distance to beat Belgium the first time the two squads got together.

Unfortunately that wasn’t the case this time around. After the US won the opening game, Belgium rallied off three consecutive games and the Youth Olympic gold medal late Wednesday/early Thursday in Singapore.

Edmond Memorial’s Micha Hancock started at setter once again and contributed nine points with four aces, three blocks and two kills.

The Americans were dominant in the first game, taking it 25-17. But Belgium quickly bounced back with a 25-20 win in game 2 and were in complete control with 25-18 and 25-12 victories to claim the gold.

The US suffered a huge blow before the match when one of its stars, Liz McMahon of Ohio, broke her arm tripping over a chain walking in the Village. The 6-foot-6 outside hitter had a team-best 13 points in the first matchup against Belgium and was leading the US with 3.45 points per set.

The closing ceremonies for the first Youth Olympic Games are tonight.
