OKC POW: Mike Anderson, NWC
The Oklahoma City Player of the Week this week is Northwest wrestler Mike Anderson. Anderson, a senior, wrestled all of last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The injury hampered him at times throughout the season, including in the state tournament.
After offseason surgery, Anderson has come back to become one of the favorites in Class 5A at 215 pounds.
In last week’s regionals, Anderson pinned Deer Creek’s Alex Christensen at 3:50 to win the region and earn the West’s No. 1 seed.
At the state tournament beginning Friday, Anderson (30-3) will start off his quest for a title against Grove’s Weston Culvey.
Anderson’s brother, Antwan, was a state champion wrestler for Capitol Hill.

Jeremy Anderson, Capitol Hill: Anderson (23-4) qualified for the Class 5A state wrestling tournament at 140 pounds. He’ll begin the tournament against Claremore’s Nick Haugen.
Marquis Buxton-Hill, Douglass: Buxton-Hill led the Trojans with 17 in Friday’s 91-39 district win over Little Axe.
Darrius Bryson, Star Spencer: Bryson scored 22 points in the Bobcats’ 80-55 win over Bristow on Friday night.
Sharane Campbell and Dejrah Payton, Star Spencer: The pair teamed up to score 52 points in the Bobcats’ win over Bristow on Friday. Campbell scored 28 and Payton added 24.
Travis Carbajal, Southeast: Carbajal scored 25 to lead the Spartans to a 95-44 win over SeeWorth Academy on Tuesday. Carbajal and Southeast begin the Class 5A playoffs Friday night against Northwest.
Deangelo Davis, Star Spencer: Davis (24-4) qualified for the Class 4A state wrestling tournament at 215 pounds.
Quira Demery and Dayla Threatt, Millwood: The Falcons’ tandem combined for 25 points in Millwood’s 61-26 district win over Lindsay on Saturday night. Demery had 13 while Threatt added 12.
Jazer and Jemuel Duran, Southeast: The sophomore duo each qualified for the 5A state wrestling tournament. Jazer (24-6) qualified at 125 pounds and will start the tournament against Grove’s Zach Housley while Jemuel (24-2) qualified at 130 pounds and will begin the tourney against Tulsa East Central’s James Duncan.
Tavion Fleeks and DeAndre Prince, John Marshall: Fleeks (19) and Prince (25) combined for 44 points in the Bears’ 85-27 district win over Santa Fe South on Friday. The duo helped turn what was a close game through one period into a blowout as John Marshall outscored the Saints 26-2 in the second.
Darrius Gates, Millwood: Gates scored 21 points to lead Millwood in a 75-32 district win over Lindsay on Saturday night.
Breanna Giddens, John Marshall: Giddens scored 19 in the Bears’ 35-point win over Santa Fe South on Friday night.
Denzel Pugh, Northeast: Pugh scored 33 for the Vikings in a 112-69 win over ASTEC on Friday night. Pugh was one of five Northeast players in double figures in the win.
Phillip Schmidt, Northwest: The sophomore (25-10) qualified for the Class 5A state wrestling tournament at 112 pounds. He’ll begin the tournament Friday against Claremore’s Calib Freeman.
Antonio Simpson, Southeast: The senior (20-7) finished second in the Class 5A regional at 189 pounds, advancing to this weekend’s state tournament. He’ll begin the event against Skiatook’s Cody Salyer.
Te’era Williams, Douglass: Williams continued to shoulder the scoring load for Douglass’ girls, scoring 28 of the Trojans’ 62 points in a 12-point district win over Little Axe.
