Mustang’s Irwin to play in all-America game; Farrow graduates
I swung by Mustang High School yesterday to visit with Bronson Irwin and learned that he’ll be playing in a high school all-American game in South Carolina on Jan. 2.
It’s the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl. Here are the rosters, which also include Sequoyah-Tahlequah’s Chris Littlehead, an OSU commit.
Irwin plans to move to Norman next month and begin attending classes at Oklahoma for the spring semester on Jan. 19. His future roommate at OU, Austin Woods of Rockwall, Texas, is also playing in the O-D All-American Bowl.
On my way out of the school, I bumped into running back Daniel Farrow, who is always smiling. But this smile was just a little bigger. He had just completed his coursework and was officially a high school graduate.
Having battled through a difficult life both in school and out of it — he lost his single mother to cancer at age 9 — Farrow focused his attention on academics this year and has completed his high school education, which required a lot of after-school work and extreme commitment for someone who had never been asked to commit himself to the classroom that way before.
His test scores will probably keep him out of a Division I program for now, so he’s looking at a couple different junior colleges in Kansas, like Hutchinson and Coffeyville. He said multiple D-I teams have checked in on him to see where he’ll be going, so they can keep an eye on him. He hopes to enroll next month and get a head-start on his college classes before spring practice begins.
If he can keep himself on the path he’s on now, this won’t be the last time you hear about Daniel Farrow. I didn’t see a better running back this year. He’s got the talent to be a big-time college player, and for his sake, I hope he makes it.

West Metro POW: LaShawn Jones, Putnam City
Really, the West Metro Player of the Week honor goes to the entire Putnam City girls basketball team for its big win over No. 2 Edmond North last week. But it was 6-foot-3 junior LaShawn Jones who came alive with 19 points to spark the victory.
It was her first big performance of the season, and she showed that she can be a force inside. With Jones’ post presence and consistent guard play, PC has the potential to do some big things this year.
Other candidates
Joe Summers, PC North: His 29-point performance in the win over Choctaw was good enough for POW honors, but the PC girls’ win was too much to ignore. Summers is a talented sophomore who will be at the forefront of PC North athletics for the next few years.
Jacob Strassle, Mustang: Averaged 16.5 points in two games last week. The 6-foot-3 junior scored 17 points to lead the Broncos past Westmoore, snapping a five-game losing skid on Friday.
Laila Suleiman, Yukon: Scored 22 points as the Millerettes coasted to a win over PC West.
Josiah Campbell, PC West: Everyone knows about Tyler Neal and Amric Fields, but Campbell, a 6-foot-3 senior who moved in from Del City, has been reliable for the Patriots. He can score, rebound and defend. He finished with 10 points in the win over Yukon last Tuesday.
Brian Brown, PC: On a team loaded with scorers, Brown stepped up with 18 points to lead the Pirates to a win over Edmond North.
Wrestler of the week
Michael Pereya, Yukon: Making his high school debut, Pereya recorded a pin at 2:11 as the Millers topped PC West 51-21, bouncing back from last week’s loss to Edmond North that ended their 19-match regular season dual win streak.
