Class 6A semifinals capsules

Class 6A
Southmoore vs. Jenks, 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Putnam City
Tulsa Union vs. Broken Arrow, 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Tulsa University
Southmoore SaberCats
Record: 11-1
Ranking: No. 4
Coach: Chris Jensen, 2nd season at Southmoore
Previous state titles: None.
Road to 2009 semifinals: Beat Lawton Eisenhower 34-42, beat Bartlesville 49-28.
2008 record (playoffs): 2-8 (None).
Last week: After struggling to put away an under-.500 Eisenhower team the week before, Southmoore had no such problems with Bartlesville. Kendal Thompson ran for 98 yards and threw for 190 and two touchdowns. Derek Serowski had 127 yards receiving and three touchdowns and Southmoore recorded four interceptions.
Player to watch: Austin Haywood, TE. Hawywood may be listed as a tight end but he does a little bit of everything on offense for Southmoore. Haywood ran for 57 yards and a touchdown last week and threw a touchdown pass to Derek Serowski out of the Wildcat.
News to know: Andrew Long has more than 1,500 rushing yards and nine TDs for the SaberCats. … Austin Haywood, DB Julian Wilson and QB Kendal Thompson are all committed to OU. … Nyko Symonds is Southmoore’s leading receiver with 732 yards and 6 TDs. … Haywood leads in receiving TDs with 10. … George Mallett leads the SaberCats with 131 tackles.
Jenks Trojans
Record: 12-0
Ranking: No. 1
Coach: Loren Montgomery, 1st season (interim)
Previous state titles: 1979 (3A), 1982 (5A), 1993 (6A), 1996 (6A), 1997 (6A), 1998 (6A), 1999 (6A), 2000 (6A), 2001 (6A), 2003 (6A), 2006 (6A), 2007 (6A).
Road to 2009 semifinals: Beat Yukon 44-6, beat Edmond Memorial 28-14.
2008 record (playoffs): 3-11 (Beat Enid 45-28, beat Edmond Santa Fe 24-3, beat Mustang 35-20, lost to Tulsa Union 34-20). All three playoff wins, and six regular season wins, were later forfeited by Jenks.
Last week: The Trojans needed a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns by Zack Langer to hold off Edmond Memorial. Langer ran for 268 yards and three touchdowns.
Player to watch: Zack Langer, RB. Langer is the leading rusher and scorer in Class 6A. Last week, he finished with 320 total yards.
Key stat: 34. Consecutive on-the-field wins by Jenks over teams other than Tulsa Union.
News to know: Trojans’ lineman David Lore had 10 tackles in last week’s win. … Junior QB Sawyer Kollmorgen has thrown for more than 2,000 yards this season. … Jenks OL Bob Graham is committed to Iowa State while OL Jake Alexander is committed to Tulsa. … The Trojans scored 40-plus points nine times this season, including seven consecutive before last week.
Broken Arrow Tigers
Record: 11-2
Ranking: No. 3.
Coach: Ron Lancaster, third season at Broken Arrow.
Previous state titles: None.
Road to 2009 semifinal: Beat Enid 45-13, beat Midwest City 24-17.
2008 record (playoffs): 9-3 (Beat Owasso 32-0, lost to Mustang 28-23.
Last week: Alex Cochran’s 52-yard touchdown catch from Archie Bradley just before halftime wound up being the difference as Broken Arrow beat Midwest City on the road. The Tigers built a 21-3 lead before Midwest City made things interesting.
Player to watch: Archie Bradley, QB. The transfer from Muskogee has thrown for more than 1,500 yards. Bradley was the quarterback for Muskogee in its win over Broken Arrow last season.
Key stat: 3. The number of seasons Ron Lancaster planned to stay at Broken Arrow after ending a one-year retirement from coaching. Lancaster, who coached at Enid, Jenks, Muskogee and Sallisaw among others, will step down at the end of the season and will be replaced by Steve Spavital.
News to know: Steven Hopper, a Houston commit, has around 1,000 yards rushing. … Broken Arrow’s only losses this season came to Union and Jenks. … Alex Cochran and Robbie Price are Broken Arrow’s leading receiviers. … John Coleman is the Tigers’ leading tackler.
Union Redskins
Record: 11-1
Ranking: No. 2
Coach: Kirk Fridrich, third season at Union.
Previous state titles: 1963 (C), 2002 (6A), 2004 (6A), 2005 (6A), 2008 (6A)
Road to 2009 semifinal: Beat Claremore 27-9, beat Lawton 63-25.
2008 record (playoffs): 13-1 (Beat Sand Springs 70-21, beat Norman North 49-14, beat Midwest City 49-17, beat Jenks 34-20)
Last week: Union scored on six of its first seven possessions en route to a 63-25 blowout of Lawton. The Redskins ran for 258 yards.
Player to watch: Chase Boyce, QB. The senior has thrown for more than 1,500 yards.
Key stat: 35.9. The Redskins’ average margin of victory in 11 wins this season.
News to know: Union beat Broken Arrow 17-6 in the season-opener. … Thomas Roberson, a Tulsa commit, has more than 700 yards receiving. … Sophomore Blace Walser and senior Bobby Lind are the Redskins top two tacklers. … Senior Jarred Davis and junior Jalen Hearron have shared the load at running back this season. Combined, they have more than 1,000 yards rushing.
