West Metro Rewind: Millers playing Week 11
Looking back at Week 10 in the West Metro:
Yukon
There’s an excitement in Yukon that hasn’t been felt in more than a decade. The regular season is over, and Yukon is still playing football. You could tell the Millers were on a mission against Choctaw Friday night. From the opening kick, they were punishing the Jackets at the line of scrimmage, opening holes for Terry Jones and the rest of the backs. Jones finished with 184 yards and three scores in the best game of his career.
Up next: The Millers get the reward that comes with being a No. 4 seed — a first-round playoff trip to a district champ, and it just happens to be top-ranked Jenks. Yukon will be the fourth team this season to play both Jenks and Union, joining Broken Arrow, Muskogee and Owasso.
Mustang
If there’s any such thing as retroactive revenge, Mustang can at least enjoy that. With Friday’s loss to Southmoore, the Broncos fell from tied for the district lead to third place, which means a road trip to open the playoffs. In addition to their own failures against Southmoore and Lawton, that drop can be blamed on Putnam City North’s win over Del City, which freed up Lawton from what would have otherwise been a three-way tie with Del City and PC North. A long story to get back around to that retroactive revenge, but it was served back in Week 8 in the form of a 46-14 win by the Broncos.
Up next: I’m really looking forward to the Mustang-Edmond Memorial game Friday night, which I’ll be covering. Of the teams outside of the West Metro, I’ve seen Memorial play more than anyone, including the two scrimmages I covered. I think it will be a fun matchup with talented playmakers on both sides.
Putnam City North
With their backs against the wall, the Panthers responded with their biggest win of the year — not point-wise, but in magnitude. The defensive performance was as good as I’ve seen from them, and probably their best of the year, creating seven turnovers and limiting a talented Del City offense to just one touchdown.
Up next: The trip to Midwest City will be a different kind of challenge for PC North. The Bombers are playing on a different level since those early losses to Southmoore and Del City. The biggest threat will be Midwest City’s run game, which will be tough for the Panthers to stop.
Putnam City and Putnam City West
The Pirates were still in the playoff hunt down to the final quarter Friday night before Edmond Memorial finished off the 15-0 win. Another great effort from that PC defense, which will lose several key players, especially up front. PC and PC West alike played hard this season, but playing hard doesn’t always produce victories, unfortunately.
