Norman: Timing is everything where injuries are concerned, and now is the worst time

It’s a long season and it’s tough for a team to make it through without having at least a few injury problems. And Norman is no different than most teams, incurring a handful of them.

However, timing is everything in the case of the Tigers. They got hit early with a costly loss as Kyle Carter, a starting receiver, corner and kick returner, was lost for the season with a knee injury after just one game. However, there was plenty of time for the Tigers to find a player or two to step in and fill the roles Carter had been in.

But late-season injuries while fighting for your playoff life is a killer. And heading into the final game of the regular season and having to win to continue to the postseason is no time to be less than full strength. But that’s where Norman is as its most productive players on both sides of the ball may miss Friday’s game against Lawton Eidenhower.

Linebacker Greg Offenburger and running back Donovan Roberts may be game-day decisions in regards to playing against the Eagles. Offenburger, a junior, has missed two straight games with a knee injury. Roberts, a sophomore, left last week’s game against Midwest City with a hip injury.

The Tigers, 4-5 overall and 3-3 in District 6A-2, will gain the fourth district playoff spot with a victory. A loss would knock them out of the postseason. Roberts would be a major loss because Norman’s offense is built around him as he averages 22 carries per game and has several 30-carry games. He’s run for 1,001 yards and averages 5.5 yards per carry.

Even while missing the pair of games, Offenburger still leads the Tigers in tackles with 79.
