Edmond: Week 9 Recap…

You mean there were other Edmond games besides Edlam? Really, you don’t say. A big win by Santa Fe coupled with maybe a just as big loss by Deer Creek makes the last week interesting.

Memorial (6-3, 5-1)
Well, what more can I say about the Bulldogs’ 10-0 win vs. North? I’m about talked out about that one. It was a performance for the ages that I really think you had to be there to appreciate.

The big thing is how Memorial bounces back. There has to be an emotional letdown. It’s not that there might be, but there has to be.

That team poured its heart and soul into that one. If Memorial looks sharp against Putnam City, this might say as much about how good of a coach Justin Merideth is than anything.

And blatant plug alert: look for a big story on senior QB Blake Umberham in Monday’s paper.

North (7-2, 4-2)
Health is my biggest question for this team. Qua’Don Henderson is banged up. Travis Townsend attempted to gut it out but just didn’t have it.

What is this team’s psyche right now? In the two games that they were admittedly fired up, it’s been a 42-13 loss to Midwest City and a 10-0 loss to Memorial.

I saw a lot of positives with the defense from Friday. If the D continues to play like that, going on the road for the playoffs is going to be doable. It’s not preferred, but it’s what they’re going to have to do.

The Huskies close it out with senior night vs. Westmoore. Get healthy and bouncing back is in order.

Santa Fe (2-7, 1-5)
I don’t like just flat out cheering for a kid, but I’m happy for quarterback Will Long. He has taken some serious flak this whole season. I mean some of the e-mails I’ve received have been astounding.

But in pulling off the 24-7 upset at Norman North, it was Long who came up big. He threw two touchdown passes (to Patrick Hinton and Matt Leavell) and didn’t throw an interception.

Of course, the defense deserves some props. The Wolves forced four turnovers and shut out the Timberwolves through three quarters.

Santa Fe has its senior night Thursday against Moore. I will be there.

Deer Creek (4-5, 3-3)
Ooh boy, the Antlers just made their life difficult. A 21-7 home loss to Altus was not what the doctor ordered. It was up for grabs as it was scoreless at halftime.

Deer Creek couldn’t get its running game going and had four turnovers. That is not a good recipe for Grant Gower’s club.

Alex Christensen had the lone touchdown on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Deer Creek is at Lawton MacArthur and needs a win and some help. It might be one of those weird night of scoreboard watching and district point calculations.
