Game Capsule: Norman at Putnam City
Norman (2-4, 1-2 6A-2) at Putnam City (2-4, 1-2 6A-2)
When: 7:30 p.m. tonight
Where: Putnam City Stadium
Norman
Why the Tigers can win: Norman knows it needs to pick up some wins if it expects to make the playoffs. Letting a game against a struggling team get away would be a major hit to the Tigers’ chances.
Putnam City
Why the Pirates could win: Like Norman, the Pirates know this is a virtual must-win if they want to stay alive for the postseason. Several teams have been able to beat them at the line of scrimmage, but they match up well with Norman, so the game will pit strength against strength. And the PC defense is playing as well as it has all year.
Quote: “We’re both real similar teams. About the same size up front, good athletes on the edge. They run more two-back stuff than we do, but it should be a battle.” — PC coach John Wofford
Key matchup: PC run game vs. Norman linebackers Greg Offenburger and Michael Barrett. The Pirates’ running game is a key matchup in every PC game lately, but it’s such a huge factor in their success. Without establishing the run, the PC offense becomes stagnant, and the Pirates start relying on special teams and defense to set up scoring opportunities — or just score themselves.
Offenburger is one of the better run-stoppers in 6A-2. The junior makes plays every game. And Barrett’s a hard-nosed player whose speciality is plugging gaps in the defense.
Scott’s pick: PC 24, Norman 21. It’ll be a close one and could go either way. But things seem to be coming together for the Pirates lately, and it’s time for the payoff.
Justin’s pick: Norman 26, Putnam City 19. The Tigers can get things going on offense at times. Jaime Myers, Donovan Roberts and Chad Anderson will rise to the occasion.
