Crosstown Clash Capsule
Norman (0-0) vs. Norman North (0-0)
When: 7:30 p.m. tonight
Where: Owen Field
Norman
Why the Tigers can win: In quarterback Chad Anderson, running back Donovan Roberts, wideouts Jaime Myers and Roger Kelley and tight end Seth Zimmer, Norman has a lot of skill-position talent. And now that the Tigers have gotten comfortable with the new offensive scheme installed last year, scoring isn’t going to be the problem is was last year.
Norman North
Why the Timberwolves can win: After opening the series with nine straight losses, Norman North has won three consecutive meetings with Norman. And the T-Wolves have taken ownership of the rivalry because they’ve been beating the Tigers badly of late - last year it was 58-0. Plus, North has an edge in individual talent, although much of it is inexperienced.
Key matchup: Norman North quarterback Brad Valentino vs. Norman quarterback Chad Anderson. Obviously, the two won’t go head to head (except on the stat sheet), but whichever QB plays with poise and confidence will give their team a major edge.
Valentino will be making his first career start, so the gameplan will likely include a lot of running to alleviate some of the responsibility from the junior. Anderson is in his first season as the full-time starter and has never started a game of this magnitude. But he still has an experience edge.
The pick: Norman North 24, Norman 14. The Tigers should be vastly improved from last year, but the Timberwolves are just further along right now.
