Carl Albert’s Porter picks Texas Tech

It wasn’t a huge shock when Carl Albert’s Tre Porter reached for the Texas Tech shirt (Yes, it was a shirt, not a hat as had been written somewhere) and chose the Red Raiders over Oklahoma State. The Red Raiders had more holes to fill in the secondary next year and, although OSU got Carl Albert’s Daytawion Lowe last year, Texas Tech has made plenty of recruiting inroads in the state.

I talked with Tre a bit before the ceremony and he seemed relaxed and ready to get the announcement out of the way. And it wasn’t a drawn out thing like so many guys like to do. He simply thanked everyone for being there, then reached out for the shirt (although he did put his hand on the OSU shirt while telling the assembled crowd how much he liked the Cowboys).

Porter said he decided on signing day last year, when Lowe and teammate David Oku signed, that he didn’t want a long, drawn out recruiting battle. He wanted to have his decision made by the time the season started.

“I just didn’t want the distraction, didn’t like all the phone calls and everything,” Porter said. “I just wanted to get it over with.”

Carl Albert coach Gary Rose had high praise for Porter, saying he’d made as much progress as any player Rose has had during his tenure with the Titans.
