Norman wideouts can do more than catch

Norman quarterback Chad Anderson was talking about his corps of receivers the other day and labeled a strength or two each one had. And while each had something unique, Anderson repeated one aspect over and over.

“They can run,” he said.

Anderson’s assertion was magnified Friday when the Tigers hosted Lawton in a scrimmage at Harve Collins Field. Jaime Myers, whose kick returns last year demonstrated his shiftiness, may be Norman’s fastest player. But the speedy wideout is even more elusive than he is fast. And against Lawton, the Wolverines saw both elements on a 30-yard run. Another receiver, Roger Kelly, also had a 30-yard run on a reverse.

Talented runners playing receiver are a common theme among local teams. Southmoore has Julian Wilson, who had two carries for two 45-yard touchdowns on reverses in a scrimmage Friday against Broken Arrow. Westmoore wideout Stanley Wilson is the Jaguars’ top running threat and will get plenty of chances to get the ball in ways other than a forward pass.

Not that running backs were left out of the spotlight in Norman’s scrimmage. Sophomore Donovan Roberts had the long run of the scrimmage, an 85-yarder.
