Rebuilding project continues at Putnam City West
The football season opens today in what is John Jensen’s third season trying to rebuild Putnam City West. It hasn’t been easy — as last year’s winless campaign proves. But Jensen is happy with the direction his team is heading.
“We’re building our numbers back up with good kids,” the coach said.
Here’s a look at what the Patriots face as practice begins today:
Top returning players
The defensive strength lies at linebacker with Kerry Daniels and Ryan Hester, two crucial pieces in what will need to be a stout defense to help out the inexperienced offense. On that side of the ball, the line returns a few key players, notably Jordan Anderson and Nick Murray.
Biggest question
Who will Anderson, Murray and the others be blocking for? A few different players are fighting for time at running back and the quarterback job — though close to being sewn up — is still available. The Pats’ backfield will miss the talent of Daniel Farrow, who has moved out of the school district.
Outlook
It’s not an easy time to be a PC West fan, but Jensen is laying the foundation for a good program. Results might not show in the win column this year, especially in a fairly deep district.
