Bounce back week…
By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@Oklahoman.com
Week 2 of the football season or as I like to call it, bounce back week. While Tulsa Union and Carl Albert are some of the obvious choices to look at, I’m going the other way.
Thursday night I’ll be at Putnam West and Yukon. On paper, doesn’t sound so thrilling. But I love what PCW coach John Jensen said, “We’re two evenly matched teams. We’re looking at their film and thinking we should win. They’re looking at our film and thinking they should win.”
Very true. After speaking with Yukon coach Todd Wilson, it was pretty obvious he felt the same way.
Will it be the same quality of Union and Jenks? Nah, but it should be competitive. And should be fun.
Wilson was pretty happy with the way the defense played in the loss to Mustang. While Jensen had few complaints after the loss to Putnam North.
Boneman’s Week 1 musings…
By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@Oklahoman.com
Week 1 has come and gone, and we’ve shown what we always show: that we STILL know nothing. Well, in some cases.
What’s the bigger shock: Broken Arrow dominating Tulsa Union or Carl Albert being manhandled by Tulsa Washington?
If you called both of those games, well, you’re better than me. The Hornets and Titans really stand out because of the beat down CA put on Booker T last year. Revenge, a dish best served cold. I’m sure the Hornets were sick of hearing about David Oku. Is it possible we’ll see the same two teams in December?
I was at Heritage Hall and Casady on Thursday, and I was your omniscient narrator Friday night with the Roundup.
Thoughts from Thursday: Either Casady is a vastly improved team from last year, or Heritage Hall could be in trouble later this year.
I was shocked at how easily the Cyclones defense negated any sort of passing game for the Chargers. They had Turner Petersen running for his life. Lucky for the Hall, that’s a good thing. Petersen looked his most comfortable when things were getting discombobulated.
I was also on Barry Sanders Sr. watch. I talked to Junior after the game who told me his dad was unable to make the game.
Speaking of which, Junior looked, I’m not going to say good but comfortable as a freshman playing in his first Polo Bowl. For a freshman, he’s already an engaging personality.
The strength of the Chargers will be on defense until that O-line matures and improves. Good thing the Hall is loaded on the defensive side of the ball.
It’ll only be a matter of time before Tanner France and Banning Fudge start making their way back into the scoring summaries again, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. We’ll learn a lot next week at Weatherford.
Friday night was busy, just working out the kinks and getting into football mode. While Guthrie was showing its defense could carry the day, I was most interested in the scrolling scoreboard on Cox Ch. 7. That had jabs being thrown left and right by yours truly, Ray and Jason.
After looking at the stats from last night, I’m geeked about Deer Creek at Shawnee next week. The Wolves won 55-0 at Chickasha last night while Dax Dilbeck scored four times in Deer Creek’s workmanlike 35-20 win against Piedmont. If the Shawnee defense can stop Dax and Co., color me impressed.
Biggest surprise: Just by a tad, I’m going Broken Arrow over Tulsa Union. While you could conceivably say BTW and CA could go either way, there was not much love for the Tigers this week.
What I learned: Against two big rivalries, Edmond Santa Fe and Midwest City looked great. The Wolves handled Edmond North with no probs same with the Bombers with Del City. And confirmed this week is the return to glory of Millwood. Star Spencer is a good football team, a solid top-5 to top-10 in 4A. The Falcons took care of business last night.
What did you learn from Week 1?
John Marshall breaks 25-game losing streak
By Jason Kersey
jkersey@oklahoman.com
John Marshall beat Northwest, 14-8 on Friday night, snapping a 25-game losing streak for the Bears.
Coach Bruce Troxell just called in the score, and said John Marshall held Northwest on a goalline stand at the end of the game to secure the victory.
Have at it over the Norman pick
By Jason Kersey
jkersey@oklahoman.com
Go ahead and give it to me. I deserve it.
Norman over Norman North was a bad pick. A horrible pick. Probably the worst pick I’ve ever made or will ever make.
OkieRover, you’re right. And trust me, I’ve gotten it bad from my colleagues at The Oklahoman today.
But, sometimes you’ve just gotta go out on a limb. Upsets happen, and the Crosstown Clash is a big rivalry. Despite North’s recent success, Norman has owned the series historically.
But that doesn’t make it right.
But, to show that I’m not completely incompetent, I did correctly pick Tulsa Washington over Carl Albert. And Muskogee over Owasso (take that, Ray Martin).
The Stooges are back…
It just wouldn’t be a high school football weekend without the return of your “beloved” stooges. Right? Anyway, we’re as thrilled as the next guy that the season is FINALLY here. Should be an interesting one, especially after the district shakeups. We’re ready to dive right in with the top 10 games and ready for people to be shaking their heads at our “genius.”
