Cashion starts season with a bang
By Jason Kersey
jkersey@oklahoman.com
Cashion started this season off with a 45-0 win over Alex in under three full quarters.
Due to the “45 point rule,” the game ended about a quarter and a half early.
Cashion ran just 22 plays in the entire game, averaging 18 yards per play.
Heralded quarterback Cayden Cochran completed four-of-five passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Tailback Travis Seaton needed just five carries to gain 126 yards and two scores.
All in all, an outstanding start to the season for Lynn Shackelford’s squad. Next week, however, comes a huge test. The Wildcats go on the road to face Davenport and freak running back Billy Jack Murphy. Last season, Cashion won the regular season meeting handily but fell to Davenport in the playoffs.
More on that match-up to come this weekend when I get a chance to talk with Shackelford.

Crosstown Clash thoughts
By Jason Kersey
jkersey@oklahoman.com
While I didn’t cover the annual Crosstown Clash between Norman and Norman North Thursday night at OU, I did attend the game as a spectator.
Norman North is absolutely loaded. Even without quarterback Tyler Tettleton, the Timberwolves look like they will be tough this season. Running back Beau Blankenship rushed for 137 yards, and it seemed like Norman just flat couldn’t stop him.
North replacement quarterback Jake Damrill threw three interceptions, which makes me think that had Tettleton played, this thing would have been even more lopsided than it wound up being.
Two of Damrill’s interceptions were just poor decisions, and both of those resulted in 10 Tiger points.
The first one was thrown deep in North territory and set Norman up for an easy touchdown drive, and the second was thrown into a well-covered area and Norman turned it into a field goal. The third was a Hail Mary at the end of the first half.
Blankenship was hurt during the game, and I still haven’t heard how serious the injury is. But it could be bad news for North if it is serious.
That said, even without Blankenship and Tettleton, I still think North is a playoff team. Some of Blankenship’s runs were the result of HUGE holes made by the North offensive line. And the Timberwolves’ defense looks tough.
Norman was just plan outmatched Thursday night. But I still believe with its district, it will be a playoff team.
Heritage Hall senior class goes 4-for-4 against Casady
by Brandon Chatmon
With its dominating 35-0 win over Casady, the Heritage Hall senior class competed a four-year sweep of the Cyclones.
Here’s some little tidbits:
–Running back Tanner France looked really good tonight. He’s quick with great vision and has very good moves. And he’s just a sophomore. Look for big things out of France before his career is over.
–Heritage Hall head coach Andy Bogert had heart surgery a couple of weeks ago, thus Mark Adams acted as head coach tonight. I spoke briefly with Coach Bogert in the press box at halftime. He looked good and seemed to be in good spirits (leading 28-0 at halftime helps,
). He said he expects to be back on the sideline at some point this year, although he’s not sure when.
–The overlooked thing about the game what the Heritage Hall defense. They simply dominated Casady. They held the Cyclones to 3.2 yards per carry.
I’m off to Carl Albert tomorrow, as the Titans will host Tulsa Washington. I’m hoping that came will be as good as expected…
Clarke cracks top 100
By Robert Przybylo
BPrzybylo@Oklahoman.com
Just a little FYI:
We’re not even done with the first Friday night of football, but it’s still never too early to look ahead to basketball.
ESPN released its top 150 recruiting prospects, and only one Oklahoma native made the list.
Rotnei Clarke of Verdigris came in at No. 81. After his dazzling efforts last year, bigger and better things are expected this year for Clarke and Co.
The top recruit was Brandon Jennings, a point guard from the legendary Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. Jennings has committed to Arizona.

Cherry overcomes burnout
By Justin Harper
jharper@oklahoman.com
Westmoore track and cross country star Katelin Cherry is about as amiable and soft-spoken person as you’ll meet. She’s also a three-time state champion in track and state runner-up in cross country. And while she loves running, her character and somewhat shy personality tends to make her dislike constant competition.
Wednesday, Cherry said she essentially took the summer off so that she could “re-kindle my love for running.” Cherry has a tremendous friendly rivalry with Tulsa Union’s Sara Vaughn (the 2006 5A state champ in cross country). However, she doesn’t like to focus on that.
“I really love running, but all the competition gets me tired of it sometimes,” Cherry said. “This summer, I just wanted to run and not compete with anyone, just relax. It helped a lot.”
