Tyler Perry impresses with “Why Did I Get Married Too?”

Janet Jackson and Malik Yoba during a scene from "Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too?"

(AP photo)

I’m usually not a fan of film director Tyler Perry’s movies. Besides the occasional funny line from his Madea character, I think his movies are typically boring and low budget.

However, my opinion of Perry changed last weekend after I saw his latest film “Why Did I Get Married Too?”

The film is about eight married friends who go on an annual vacation to socialize with one another and to analyze their marriages.

The characters deal with physical cheating, emotional cheating, lack of communication, lack of trust, lack of a prenuptial agreement,  illness, unemployment, insecurities, divorce, substance abuse and death.

While dealing with those  issues, the characters struggle to keep their relationships in tact.  Perry intertwines comedy, drama and suspense into this two-hour film.

If you’re not a Perry fan, I recommend you see the movie this weekend.  It will change your mind, like it did with me.  This movie is now in the top five best movies I’ve seen during the past year.

This might sound cliche, but the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, and the storyline was unpredictable. You didn’t know what was going to happen from scene to scene.

The film stars Perry, Janet Jackson, Malik Yoba, Jill Scott, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Sharon Leal, Louis Gossett Jr. and Cicely Tyson.

Jackson’s performance surprised me.  Her acting skills have improved greatly since her “Poetic Justice” days in 1993.  After watching her performance, I now consider Jackson a real actress.

Janet Jackson and Tyler Perry on Oprah, discusses new movie, Michael’s death

Singer/actress Janet Jackson and film director Tyler Perry were guests on Friday’s episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

Jackson and Perry discussed their new movie “Why Did I Get Married Too,” and Jackson discussed the death of her brother Michael and the interventions they had with him.

Excerpts from the interview are posted below.

“I got a call from an assistant. She had said that there was something on TV about my brother being ill. So I immediately called home, and I was able to reach my sister La Toya, my nephew, Austin, and I think my brother, Jermaine, at the time. They were on their way to the hospital. I can’t remember exactly who I wound up calling back, to see how things were going. That’s when they told me he had passed.”"It’s hard for me to look at an image of his or listen to his music on the radio.”

“There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about him. All of us in the family think about him every single day.  The last time I saw him, which was two days before my birthday at my parents’ surprise party, I was being silly like I always did when we were kids, and he kept looking at me and just cracking up.”

“We knew that he had a problem. We all did. I think a lot of people think that we were in denial, which we weren’t at all. We tried interventions several times.  He was very much still in denial.”

(from Tyler Perry) “I wouldn’t dare say anything more than she would want me to, but they really, really tried.  The entire family. I want the whole world to know how much they tried. There were all those reports that they didn’t do anything.  That’s not true.”

Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey might be rivals on the music charts, but they will soon be co-stars in director Tyler Perry’s next movie.

Perry announced the cast for his upcoming film titled “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.”

Yes, the title is lengthy.

The film will star Jackson, Carey, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, Kerry Washington, Kimberly Elise and Loretta Divine.

Perry told MTV the movie will be released in late 2010 or early 2011.

The movie is based on a 1975 play that deals with rape, abandonment and abortion.

With the list of high-profile names attached to this film, it will probably do well at the box office.

Meanwhile, “Why Did I Get Married Too” will be in theaters April 2. The movie also stars Tyler Perry, Jill Scott, Sharon Leal, Malik Yoba, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Cicely Tyson and Louis Gossett Jr.

Pop music legend Janet Jackson is speaking out against her brother Michael Jackson’s doctor.  In an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, Janet said she blames Dr. Conrad Murray for Michael’s death.

She said Murray “was the one that was administering propofol.  I think he is responsible.”

Although I agree Dr. Murray deserves some of the blame for Michael’s death because he administered propofol, it’s not entirely his fault.  Michael willingly took the drug because he was a drug addict.  He suffered from an addiction to medication, and that’s what killed him.

He hired Dr. Murray to travel with him and serve as his full-time doctor so he could have easy acess to prescription drugs.

Michael was a genius in the music industry.  He made the right decisions when it came to his music, his dancing and his videos.  But when it came to decisions in his personal life, Michael was negligent, and that negligence is what killed him.

In excerpts released by ABC News, Janet also describes how she found out Michael died.

“I was at my house in New York. You know, another day, another morning. And I get a call.  My assistant said, ‘Your brother’s been taken to the hospital. It’s on CNN right now,’   I called everyone.  There’s a line busy or someone wasn’t picking up. I spoke to mother. I spoke to Tito. I spoke to my nephew Austin. I spoke to my sister La Toya. I told them to call me when they got to the hospital, and I remember thinking nobody’s calling me back, so I tried calling again, and that’s how I found out that he was no longer. I couldn’t believe it  It just didn’t ring true to me. It felt like a dream.”

Janet’s full interview will air Nov. 18 on ABC.

During the interview, Janet said the late time she saw her king of pop brother was May 14 at a family gathering.

“When I was 14 years old, I would shop for him, washed his clothes, cleaned his room. When Mother would go out of town, she’d say ‘I’m leaving you in charge, take care of Mike.’ I would head home from school, see what he needed, then go straight to the stores.”

Janet told the magazine she learned about Michael’s death while she was on the movie set filming scenes for Tyler Perry’s upcoming movie “Why Did I Get Married 2.”

The movie will be in theaters April 2, 2010.

Janet Jackson postpones tour in Japan

janet jackson

Janet Jackson is postponing her tour in Japan due to the financial crisis.

According the BBC, the concert promoter said the shows will be postponed due to the impact of the economic crisis.

ast year, Janet canceled most of her dates during her North American tour due to an illness.

It seems like this tour was doomed from the start.

However, I was forntunate to attend her concert when she performed in Tulsa last October.

My New Year’s resolution for celebrities (part 1)

caroline kennedyparis hiltonnicole richiekim kardashianbarack obamamary kate olsenmariah careyjanet jackson

– My News Year’s resolution for Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson is for them to tell us the truth soon about whether they are pregnant.  They keep denying media reports that they are pregnant, but yet, we keep seeing photos of them gaining weight. Please show us the pregnancy test results so we can put this behind us once and for all.

– My New Year’s resolution for Barack Obama is for him to stay away from all religious pastors. First, he got in trouble for associating himself with Rev. Jeremiah Wright who blamed America for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Now, he’s under heavy scrutiny for selecting Pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at his inauguration. Warren has a history of making derogatory statments about gay people.

– My New Year’s resolution for MTV is for that network to start airing music videos again. MTV stands for Music Televsion, but they rarely air music videos. They typically only air reality shows. Maybe they should change the the name to RTV (Reality Television).

– My New Year’s resolution for Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and Kim Kardashian is for them to find a real full-time job. I get annoyed when I see them making millions even though they don’t have a job.

– My New Year’s resolution for Caroline Kennedy is for her to stay away from the U.S. Senate. Just because her last name is Kennedy, that doesn’t mean she should be appointed to that seat.

– My New Year’s resolution for George W. Bush is for him to NEVER run for public office again. No explanation needed.

– My New Year’s resolution for Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen is for them to gain some weight. It’s very unhealthy for adult women to weigh 75 pounds.  They need to go to McDonald’s and eat a couple of Big Mac’s, fries and an apple pie every day this year until they tip the scale at 105 pounds.

 – My New Year’s resolution for Tyler Perry is for him to take his sitcom “House of Pain” off the air permantently. That is the worst sitcom I have ever seen.

Ten questions on my mind

Ten questions on my mind this week

By Kortnee, guest blogger

1. T-Pain, we understand that you’re a fashion icon, but top hats should remain where they belong–on the circus ringmaster

2. Why is Oprah Winfrey’s weight gain/weight loss still making national news? That is so 1990s.

3. To the guy who threw the shoe at President Bush, what were you thinking? While we’re on the subject, are we really surprised that his arm was “allegedly” broke in detention?

4. You pregnant or not Janet?

5. How pathetic was it that R.Kellyblamed his statutory rape charge on his brother?

6. Michael Jackson, while I know about all of your “unexplained diseases/illnesses,” but you have seven siblings. Shouldn’t at least one of them have your illnesses too?

7. One word for the guy who was able to impersonate Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” video on YouTube… “WOW!”

8. Keanu Reeves, can you please shake the Neo character off long enough to expand your acting chops?

9. Where is Dave Chapelle? Please come back to television. They need you.

10. Is Lil Wayne the new Flavor Flav?

Jermaine Dupri says Janet Jackson is not pregnant

Jermaine Dupri says Janet Jackson is not pregnant

Janet Jackson’s boyfriend Jermaine Dupri said she is NOT pregnant.  Most of the celebrity magazines have been reporting that Jackson is pregnant with Dupri’s child.

Even though the couple keeps on denying it, the speculation continues anyway.

On his blog, Dupri said “No she is not pregnant and yes we’re still together.  It baffles me how y’all let these blog and magazines control your lives.  So whenever  you hear sh*t about me you can come right here and get the truth.”

Click here to read what Jackson’s sister La Toya says about Janet’s alleged pregnancy.

Is Janet Jackson pregnant?

Is Janet Jackson pregnant? Is Janet Jackson pregnant?

Rumors have been running wild for quite some time about Janet Jackson’s pregnancy status. Is she or isn’t she pregnant with her boyfriend’s Jermaine Dupri’s child? Gossip magazines claim that she is pregnant, but Janet’s representatives keep denying it.

Despite the repeated denials from Janet’s camp, Life and Style magazine put Janet on its recent cover with the headline “Yes I’m Pregnant.”Is Janet Jackson pregnant?

Janet’s older sister La Toya might have given us some insight into the situation.  TMZ video cameras caught La Toya leaving a clothing store, and the photographer asked her if Janet was pregnant.

Here is La Toya’s response…”I knew somebody was going to ask me that. You know what? I just hung up the with her just now, and I said come on Jan tell me the truth now are you? and guess what? She avoided the question.”

It seems like La Toya has such a big mouth. I’m sure Janet didn’t want her to run outside and tell the paparazzi that she avoided the pregnancy question.

By avoiding the question, it makes it seem like Janet is pregnant.

No wonder she didn’t want to tell La Toya. She knew she would blab to photographers. I am glad, however, that La Toya revealed this information though. I could be wrong, but I do believe that Janet is pregnant.

Remember, she canceled most of her concert dates due a “mysterious illness” earlier this year. I’m willing to bet that “mysterious illness” was morning sickness.

Janet Jackson won’t rescedule canceled shows

Janet Jackson

It looks Janet Jackson won’t rescheduling any of her canceled shows during her “Rock Witchu Tour.”

According to the Associated Press, the seven concerts that Janet missed due to an illness won’t be rescheduled at all.

Janet canceled her shows in Montreal, Boston, Philadelphia, Greensboro, Ft. Lauderdale, Uncasville and Syracuse in September and October because she had vertigo.

At first she said she was going reschedule the shows, but now she is not.

That’s tough luck for the fans in those seven cities who won’t get to see her perform.

She performed at the Bank of Oklahoma Center in Tulsa last month, and I was fortunate enough to attend that show.

Janet Jackson is resuming her tour

Janet Jackson is resuming her tour

Janet Jackson’s tour is back on track.

After canceling several tour dates during the past few weeks due to an “illness,” Janet (Miss Jackson if ya nasty) will resume her tour Oct. 11 in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Unless she gets sick again and decides to cancel more shows, she is on track to perform in Tulsa at the Bank of Oklahoma Center on Oct. 26.

Update: Janet Jackson cancels three more concerts

http://blog.newsok.com/gossip

Singer Janet Jackson (Miss Jackson if ya nasty) has canceled three more concerts. She canceled the show in Greensboro (North Carolina), Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale due to an illness.

It’s speculated that she is suffering from exhaustion. This is will be six shows that Janet has canceled because of this “illness.”

Janet was hospitalized on Monday before a show in Montreal after she became ill during rehearsals.

She is scheduled to perform at Oct .26 at the Bank of Oklahoma Center in Tulsa, and this will be the first time that she has performed in Oklahoma in a couple of decades.

But something tells me that she might end up canceling that show too. No, I don’t have inside information on that. I’m just going with my gut feeling.
