Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift took home the top awards during the Academy of Country Music Awards (ACM) Sunday night.

Underwood won entertainer of the year and Swift took home the trophy for album of the year.   This was an amazing feat for both ladies because they won in a category filled with males, and that rarely happens. Reba McEntire presents Taylor Swift with an ACM award

Since the award debuted in 1970, Underwood is only the seventh woman to win the entertainer of the year award during the past 39 years.

With so many talented female vocalists in country music, why is it that women rarely take home this coveted award?

According to the Associated Press, country singer Reba McEntire said “I wish I knew.  Women just have to work harder to stay in the running with the guys.  It’s always been that way and the women always overachieve, in my opinion.”

The seven female musical acts who have won the entertainer of the year since 1970 are Underwood, McEntire, Loretta Lynn, Dixie Chicks, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain and Barbara Mandrell.

So why is the ACM committee so hesitant to give more women singers the entertainer of the year award? Is the committee overwhelming made up of male voters?
