David Letterman scandal inspires “Law & Order” episode

(AP Photo/CBS)
David Letterman’s sexual escapades with his female staffers were embarrassing for the late night show host when the incidents became public.
But the scandal gave writers of a television drama some new material.
According to “Access Hollywood,” Letterman’s situation inspired “Law & Order” writers to create an episode in which a married talk show host is blackmailed for having affairs.
The host was blackmailed as part of a $3 million extortion plot.
The difference is the talk show host is female, unlike Letterman. Can’t wait to see this episode.

The 10th annual Latin Grammy awards were held Thursday in Las Vegas. Highlights from the show are posted in the Associated Press story below.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Only a few minutes into the Latin Grammys awards show, Puerto Rican duo Calle 13 already led the competition with four gold gramophones Thursday night in Las Vegas.
The reggaeton group snapped up both best urban album for the politically charged “Los de Atras Vienen Conmigo” and best alternative song, for “No Hay Nadie Como Tu,” their lyrically complex collaboration with Mexico City rockers Cafe Tacvba.
The half brothers, Rene Perez, who is known as “Residente,” and Eduardo Cabra, or “Visitante,” posed for cameras on the carpet with their mother and Panamanian salsa legend Ruben Blades, who collaborated with them on “La Perla,” an ode to a seaside slum in San Juan.

While women in sequined gowns rubbed shoulders with Mexican regional groups in identical suits and cowboy hats on the carpet, Residente ran past the bleachers high-fiving the fans and signed autographs.
Most of the 49 awards in a variety of categories befitting the diverse musical traditions of the Americas, including best albums in Christian, grupero and Brazilian sertaneja music, were handed out during a pre-show ceremony.
“To all the people who make music in this moment of independent music, to hell with record labels! This is the moment for those of us who make real music,” Residente said after receiving the award for best alternative song.
Later, during the live telecast, the outspoken rapper dedicated the Latin Grammy for record of the year to government workers who lost their jobs in Puerto Rico.
The Latin Recording Academy honored Mexico’s prolific singer-songwriter Juan Gabriel with its person of the year award.
“For Mexico!” said the “Divo of Juarez,” as he kissed his statuette.
Mexican rock band Jaguares won for best rock album by a duo or group for “45″ and lead singer Saul Hernandez won best rock song for “Entre tus Jardines.”
Hernandez composed the song for his wife, he said, because “Men aren’t always right.”
Mercedes Sosa, who died in October, won in the folklore category for her album of duets, “Cantora 1.” Her longtime pianist and musical director, Popi Spatocco, accepted the award on her behalf.
Chucho and Bebo Valdes, father and son from Cuba, won best jazz album for “Juntos para Siempre.”

MTV Europe Music Award winners and highlights

The MTV Europe Music Awards were held Wednesday in Berlin, Germany. Beyonce was the biggest winner as always. I find it interesting how most of the winners were American and not European.
The Associated Press story is posted below, along with a list of winners at the bottom.
ASSOCIATED PRESS
BERLIN (AP) — Berlin loves Beyonce.
The R&B superstar scooped up three wins Thursday at the 16th annual MTV Europe Music Awards, including trophies for best female, best song for “Halo” and best video for her No. 1 smash, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It.)”
When she won the best video award, she thanked Jay-Z — who just happens to be her husband — for “putting a ring on it.”
Jay-Z was also honored, winning MTV Europe’s best urban act — though he said he looked forward to the day when “all those awards come down” that it’s just music, plain and simple, adding “Danke schoen” (thank you in German) before leaving the stage.
Other winners included Green Day, the established trio whose punk-influenced tunes have garnered it a fan legion worldwide. The trio won the award for best rock act while U2, which earlier Thursday performed a six-song mini-set in front of the German capital’s iconic Brandenburg Gate, won best live act.
U2 frontman Bono paid tribute to Berlin, which marks the 20th anniversary of the collapse of the Berlin Wall on Monday, for its grit and determination. The band recorded its LP “Achtung Baby” in the city and drew inspiration from reunification to write its oft-played single “One.”
German pop quartet Tokio Hotel, which has toured steadfastly and built up a fan base outside of Germany won best group and played a set that saw its amps and equipment light up in organized pyrotechnics.
Lady Gaga took best new act though she was not in person, having had to stay in New York and Eminem took best male, beating out Kanye West, Mika, Robbie Williams and Jay-Z for award. Turkey’s maNga took home the best European act, giving Turkey the award for the second consecutive year — last year the country’s Emre Aydin scored a trophy.
Katy Perry, who hosted the show for the second consecutive year, lauded Berlin and Germany, citing its history of division by the wall and sported a bevy of toned-down yet sultry costumes that hearkened back to Berlin’s Weimar-era of hedonism and decadence.
The telecast also featured performances by Foo Fighters, Leona Lewis and Shakira.
Berlin is the only city to host the awards show twice — in 1994 and this year — a decision MTV said it made to mark the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s collapse.

Best Male — Eminem
Best Urban — Jay-Z

According to “Entertainment Tonight,” the 75-year-old actress had was hospitalized after she had trouble breathing.
A spokesperson said the surgery was successful and McClanahan is recovering.

Oprah Winfrey cancels gospel singer from show

Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey is caving into pressure and will remove gospel singer BeBe Winans from an upcoming episode of her show.
Winans appeared on Oprah’s show last month, and he taped another appearance during Oprah’s karaoke challenge.
Winans was charged with a misdemeanor domestic assault earlier this year, accused of shoving his ex-wife to the ground.
His ex-wife Debra Winans publicly complained that Oprah shouldn’t have allowed BeBe to appear on her show because she took a hard stance against Chris Brown when he was charged with assaulting Rihanna.
Many bloggers (myself included) accused Oprah of having a double standard.
Apparently, Oprah agrees because her spokesman issued a statement saying BeBe will no longer appear on the karaoke challenge episode.

A portion of Rihanna’s interview with Diane Sawyer aired on “Good Morning America” on Thursday.
Rihanna discussed the incident that occurred with her then-boyfriend Chris Brown.
Rihanna said “I fell in love with that person. That’s embarrassing. That’s embarrassing that that’s the type of person that I fell in love with. So far in love. So unconditional, that I went back.”
“I’m a human being, and people put me on a very unrealistic pedestal. All these expectations. I’m not perfect.”
Rihanna also insinuated she went back to Brown eight or nine times before she left for good.
