Sarah Palin to resign as Alaska governor

sarah-palin

Former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin announced today she is resigning as governor of Alaska.

Palin made the announcement during a press conference in Wasilla, Alaska.  She said “We know we can affect positive change outside government at this point in time on another scale and actually make a difference for our priorities.”

“Many just accept that lame duck status and they hit the road. They draw a paycheck and they kind of milk it. I’m not going to put Alaskans through that. I promised efficiencies and effectiveness.”

Palin said she will resign in three weeks, a year-and-a-half before her term ends.  Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell will take her place July 26.

Although no one really no the true reason why she’s quitting, but I’m sure we will find out soon.  Palin made history last year when she became the second female vice presidential candidate in history.

Transformers director responds to Megan Fox’s criticisms

Megan Fox and Shia Labeouf at the premiere of their film "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"

“Transformers” actress Megan Fox might be one of the hottest actresses in Hollywood right now, but “Transformer” director Michael Bay said some of the things she says is ridiculous.

Fox was quoted criticizing Bay’s films for focusing more on special-effects and less on acting.

For example, if you’ve seen the latest “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” movie, you will notice how there is a huge amount of action and special effects.

michael-bay

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Bay responded to Fox’s criticisms.

He said “Well, that’s Megan Fox for you. She says some very ridiculous things because she’s 23 years old and she still has a lot of growing to do. You roll your eyes when you see statements like that and think, “Okay Megan, you can do whatever you want. I got it.”

“But I 100% disagree with her. Nick Cage wasn’t a big actor when I cast him, nor was Ben Affleck before I put him in “Armageddon.” Shia LaBeouf wasn’t a big movie star before he did “Transformers”—and then he exploded. Not to mention Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, from “Bad Boys.” Nobody in the world knew about Megan Fox until I found her and put her in “Transformers.” I like to think that I’ve had some luck in building actors’ careers with my films.”

Quincy Jones says Michael Jackson didn’t want to be black

michael-jackson-and-quincy-jones
Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones backstage at the Grammy Awards in 1984

In an interview with Details Magazine, music producer Quincy Jones makes some interesting statements about Michael Jackson.

He said he doesn’t think Michael wanted to be black.  He talks about conversations he had with Michael about his plastic surgeries, and why he refuses to attend Jackson’s funeral.

Jones produced Jackson’s “Off The Wall” and “Thriller” albums.  The interview is posted below.

Q: How have you been holding up since Michael Jackson’s death?
A: Oh, man. It’s surrealistic. I went to Shanghai for the movie festival over there—I took Halle Berry—and then went back to Luxembourg, and in three days I lost Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, and Michael. And Michael’s thing is still surrealistic to me. I can’t process it, man. I don’t know how to process it. It’s just unbelievable—him leaving before me. I can’t believe it.

Q: How did you learn that he had died?
A:Well, everybody in the world called me. I got 500 e-mails. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. At first they said they’d taken him to the hospital, then they said he’d had a stroke or a heart attack—it just kept going back and forth and we didn’t know what was really happening. And at first I thought he was just kind of freaked out by the coming concerts, because I was in London when they announced the 50 concerts and they sold out in four hours. . . We’d see each other all the time, and I just can’t believe he’s not here.”

Q: Have you been crying?
A: Oh, man, it’s more than that. It’s way more than that. It hurts my soul, man. It’s just a lump down there.

Q: You were there to witness the strange evolution in Michael’s appearance. Did you ever step in and saying anything about it?
A: Oh, we talked about it all the time. But he’d come up with, “Man, I promise you I have this disease,” and so forth, and “I have a blister on my lungs,” and all that kind of b.s. It’s hard, because Michael’s a Virgo, man—he’s very set in his ways. You can’t talk him out of it. Chemical peels and all that stuff.

Q: Did you believe him about the disease?quincy-jones
A:I don’t believe in any of that bullshit, no. No. Never. I’ve been around junkies and stuff all my life. I’ve heard every excuse. It’s like smokers—”I only smoke when I drink” and all that stuff. But it’s bullshit. You’re justifying something that’s destructive to your existence. It’s crazy. I mean, I came up with Ray Charles, man. You know, nobody gonna pull no wool over my eyes. He did heroin 20 years! Come on. And black coffee and gin for 40 years. But when he called me to come over to see him when he was in the hospital on his way out, man, he had emphysema, hepatitis C, cirrhosis of the liver, and five malignant tumors. Please, man! I’ve been around this all my life. So it’s hard for somebody to pull the wool over my eyes. But when somebody’s hell-bent on it, you can’t stop ‘em.”

Q: But it must’ve been so disturbing to see Michael’s face turn into what it turned into.
A: “It’s ridiculous, man! Chemical peels and all of it. And I don’t understand it. But he obviously didn’t want to be black.”

Q: Is that what it was?
A: Well, what do you think? You see his kids?

Q: Did you ever discuss it? Did you ever ask, “Michael, don’t you want to be a black man?”
A: No, no, no, please. That’s not the way you do it.

Q: But he was beautiful before?
A: Man, he was the most gorgeous guy.

Q: But he seemed to have some deep-seated issue with how he looked?
A: Well, that comes about a certain way. I’m not sure how it happens. I’m just a musician and a record producer. I’m not a psychiatrist. I don’t understand all that stuff. We all got problems. But there’s a great book out called Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart. Did you see that? That book says the statute of limitations has expired on all childhood traumas. Get your stuff together and get on with your life, man. Stop whinin’ about what’s wrong, because everybody’s had a rough time, in one way or another.

Q: I’ve heard you say that you wanted Michael to sing “She’s Out of My Life,” the great pop ballad from Off the Wall, in part because you felt like he had to deal with reality.
A: “I just wanted to hear him deal with a romantic relationship with a human being rather than a rat. I’m saying that facetiously, but it’s true. I saw him at the Oscars very emotional about “Ben.” I wanted to hear him get in touch with a real human relationship. “She’s Out of My Life” was written by Tommy Bahler from a very bad ending to a marriage. So it was very real. I was saving it for Sinatra. But I gave it to Michael. And Michael cried during every take, and I left the tears in. “

michael-jacksonQ: It’s interesting you mention this, because I was just watching a clip on YouTube where you’re sitting on a couch with Michael and he’s petting a snake the whole time.
A:Oh, I remember that. Yeah, that was Muscles.”

Q: Muscles?
A:Muscles. That’s a big boa constrictor he had. Muscles used to wrap around my leg in a record session and crawl across the console. I was never comfortable with that. It was a choice between that and Bubbles—you know, the chimp.”

Q: Did you ever meet Bubbles?
A: “Are you kidding me? He bit a hole in my daughter’s hand! Rashida’s hand. Rashida Jones—did you see I Love You, Man? That’s my daughter. She was a little girl. And Bubbles bit her hand. Michael used to bring Muscles and Bubbles by the house all the time, you know.”

Q: What did you think of that? Wasn’t that a little weird?
A: “I don’t know, man. Everybody does his own thing. I’ve met every freak in the business. Everybody has their idiosyncrasies. I try not to judge it, you know. I know all women are junkies for little dogs and bags and purses. Ha ha ha ha!”

Q: At root, what do you think killed Michael Jackson?
A: I don’t know, man. I’m a musician. I’m not a psychiatrist. I would think that the pressure of the concerts and the debt and everything else . . . look, I’ve been in the hands of Nobel doctors for the last five years, in Stockholm, at the Karolinska hospital, which you can’t even pay to get in. I’ve learned so much about the human mind and the body, and the doctors talk all the time about how you become your thoughts. It’s true. With one thought it starts, you know, and if you sit there and just stay hung up on one negative thought, you will become that thought. I know that Lisa Marie Presley said that she always thought he was going to die like Elvis. You sit and think about that stuff, it’ll happen to you. If you start thinking about darkness instead of light, or fear instead of love, you’ll get in trouble. I really believe that.

Q: With so many people asking you about Michael Jackson, is it hard to find the private space in which to mourn his death?
A: Yes, it is. It’s surrealistic. I don’t know how to process it at all. Because everybody’s reacting to it, and making up their own answers.

Q: You’ve said that you don’t attend funerals anymore because you’ve lost so many friends. Do you plan to attend Michael Jackson’s funeral?
A: No, not at all, not at all. Because it’s going to be, like, 9 million people there, and it’s not what I want to see.

Q: You’re not going to be there?
A: No. I can’t be there, anyway. I’m going to Wales the day after tomorrow, I go to Montreux, I go to Marbella, I go to the south of France. My condolences and love I’ve already sent to the family. But being there with 10 million people is not my idea of a tribute to somebody you were so close to—who’s got a part of your soul. Our souls were joined, you know. And a piece of it goes with him.

Kevin Jonas is engaged

kevin-jonas

One of the Jonas Brothers is about to be taken off the market.

In an interview with People magazine, Kevin Jonas, 21, revealed he is engaged to his 22-year-old girlfriend Danielle Deleasa.  Jonas proposed the traditional way by dropping down on one knee.

The couple met two years ago while they were on vacation with their families in the Bahamas.   A date for the wedding hasn’t been set.

Kevin is the oldest member of Jonas Brothers.  The group released their first CD in 2006.  Many female fans will probably be upset because their Jonas brother is taken.  But there are still two Jonas Brothers who are unmarried.  So, all is not lost for them.

Vibe Magazine closes down

eminem-vibe-magazineti-vibe-magazinebarack-obama-vibe-magazine

Another death has been announced in the entertainment industry.  Thankfully, it’s not a person.  It’s a printed product–which is equally as devasting (in my opinion).

The popular hip hop/R&B magazine titled Vibe Magazine has officially closed down.  The magazine has been hit hard by the economy and a decline in readership.

Newspapers and magazines across the country are closing down and laying off employees because readers aren’t purchasing the printed product anymore.  Instead, they are going online to read their news for free.  Plus, advertising revenue is falling.

“On behalf the VIBE CONTENT staff (the best in this business), it is with great sadness, and with heads held high, that we leave the building today. We were assigning and editing a Michael Jackson tribute issue when we got the news.” mary-j-blige-vibe-magazine

“It’s a tragic week in overall, but as the doors of VIBE Media Group close, on the eve of the magazine’s sixteenth anniversary, it’s a sad day for music, for hip hop in particular, and for the millions of readers and users who have loved and who continue to love the VIBE brand. We thank you, we have served you with joy, pride and excellence, and we will miss you.”

Vibe Magazine was created in 1993 by music producer Quincy Jones. In 2006, he sold the magazine to Wicks Media Group.

In an interview with EbonyJet.com, Jones said “I’m trying to buy my magazine back now,” Jones told EbonyJet.com just moments ago during a telephone call to Jones’ London abode. “They just messed my magazine all up, but I’m gonna get it back. You better believe it, I’m’a take it online because print and all that stuff is over.”

As a subscriber to Vibe Magazine, I’m sad to see the magazine close down.  It always had in-depth interviews with hip hop musicians that you couldn’t get in other magazines.  (RIP Vibe)

Why was mainstream media slow at reporting Michael Jackson’s death

twitter

Remember immediately after Michael Jackson died last Thursday, the news of his death spread like wild fire on several social network sites including Twitter and Facebook.

However, various news outlets including CNN and MSNBC were still reporting that Jackson was hospitalized, but he was still alive.

I was confused that day, and I didn’t know what to believe.  TMZ said Jackson was dead, but most reputable news organization said he was still alive.

Why was the mainstream media slow at reporting Jackson’s death?  My colleague Alan Herzberger wrote an interesting blog explaining why most news organizations were hesitant to report Jackson had died.

Herzberger is the digital managing editor for OPUBCO and NewsOK.com.   Click here to read the blog post.

Michael Jackson update (June 30)

michael-jackson-janet-jackson-and-latoya-jackson

LaToya Jackson, from left, Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson

As predicted, there is a lot of craziness going on in the aftermath of Michael Jackson’s death.  Here is what various media outlets are saying now:

– TMZ is reporting that two of Michael’s children aren’t biologically his or Debbie Rowe’s.  They’re also saying the children were conceived outside of the womb, and Debbie’s eggs were not used.  She just carried the baby.  TMZ can sometimes be a gossipy Web site, but they were the first news outlet to report that Jackson died. So, I will give them the benefit of the doubt.

– According to CNN, Michael Jackson’s body will return to his Neverland Ranch on Friday for a public viewing. And a private memorial service is scheduled for Sunday.

Meanwhile, his will from 2002 has surfaced. In the will, Michael left his estate to be divided up among his three children and his mother Katherine Jackson. Katherine was granted temporary custody of the children in court yesterday.

Most notably absent from the will is Michael’s father Joe Jackson, who created the Jackon Five group. In recent years, Michael accused Joe of physically abusing him as a child.

–According to the Associated Press, Michael’s assets were worth $567 million, but his net worth was $236 million.  Those are based on figures from 2007.

–US Weekly is speculating the dermatologist is the father of Michael’s kids.

Anna Kournikova involved in a fight

anna-kournikova-11Anna Kournikova was involved a cat fight in Las Vegas during the weekend.

According to People magazine, the former tennis star got into a physical altercation after a drunk woman threw a drink on her at a nightclub.

At first, the two ladies began shoving each other. Then the woman grabbed Kournikova by her neck and pushed her into the wall.

Security guards finally stepped in a broke up the fight, and the two ladies went their separate ways.

Not only was Anna Kournikova a terrible tennis player, but now we know she’s a terrible fighter as well.

So what has Kournikova been up to lately?  Absolutely nothing.  According to her Web, she attended an event in the Czech Republic earlier this month, but that’s about it.

Britney Spears and Ellen DeGeneres Twitter account hacked

ellen-degeneresbritney-spears

If you received a tweet from Britney Spears or Ellen DeGeneres today, it probably wasn’t from them.

According to the Associated Press, Britney and Ellen’s Twitpic Twitter account was hacked.

The person who broke into Britney’s account posted a message falsely indicating Britney had died.

I’m sure it caused a scare among Britney fans, especially since we just lost Michael Jackson, Ed McMahon and Farrah Fawcett.

The company is working on correcting the problem.   In the meantime, Britney and Ellen should be thinking about new passwords.

Michael Jackson’s mother granted temporary custody of children

katherine-jackson

The matriarch of the Jackson family Katherine Jackson has been given temporary custody of seeking custody of the late Michael Jackson’s three children.

Debbie Rowe is the biological mother of  two of the children, but Katherine alleged the children have no relationship with their mother whatsoever, according to the petition.

The mother for Michael’s third child, nicknamed Blanket, is listed as “None.”

This is the first legal step among many others to come in wake of Jackson’s death.

Katherine has long been considered the strength behind the Jackson family.  She was a staunch defender of her children throughout their careers.  It’s appropriate that she take the lead on this one.

Live Blog: 2009 BET Awards

jamie-foxx1

The BET Awards are airing tonight, and the network will revamp the show and turn it into a Michael Jackson tribute at the Shrine Auditorium.

Many celebrities paid homage to the late Michael Jackson.  The show was hosted by Jamie Foxx. Click here to view the photo gallery.

Keep checking back here for live updates about the show.

7:00 p.m. - Members of New Edition performing a medley of songs by Jackson 5.  It was good to see New Edition reunited as well as hearing vintage Jackson 5 songs.

7:04 p.m. - Jamie Foxx walked out wearing the Michael Jackson red jacket and sparkling white glove.  Jamie and three female dancers performed the dance routine to “Beat It.”  Jamie did good with the routine.  During his monologue, Jamie shared his memories of Michael Jackson in a humorous way.

7:12 p.m. - Jamie Foxx successfully moonwalked across the stage.

7:13 p.m. - Tyra Banks presents best male athlete to NBA star LeBron James.

7:15 p.m. - Tyra Banks also presents the award for hip hop male artist to Lil Wayne.

tyra-bankslebron-james

7:22 p.m. - Keri Hilson performed a medley of her hit songs “Turnin Me On,” and “Knock You Down.”  She’s a cute girl, but she doesn’t really have  good vocals, and she’s not a good performer either.  “Knock You Down” is currently number 4 on the Billboard charts, and “Turnin Me On.”

7:26 p.m. - Ne-Yo performs Michael Jackson’s ballad “The Lady In My Life.”  He did a good version of that song.  Not many people are familiar with that tune.  It was on Jackson’s “Thriller” Album

7:29 p.m. - Michael Jackson’s father Joe Jackson is in the audience.  The camera just panned to him.  This show is kind of depressing.  It’s bringing back all of the memories I have of Michael.

7:35 p.m. - actor Anthony Anderson and actress Keke Palmer are onstage.  Keke busted out with a rendition of “Who’s Loving You” by Jackson 5.  She can really sing.  I didn’t know she had it in her.

7:37 p.m. - Jamie Foxx and T-Pain perform their hit song “Blame It.”  That happens to be my favorite club jam right now.  “Blame it on the al-al-al-al-al alcohol.”  During the performance, rocker Travis Barker comes out and starts playing the drums.

7:47 p.m. - Soulja Boy performs his song “Turn My Swag On.” He sounds kind of tone deaf, but he has alot energy though.

7:51 p.m. - Singers Chaka Khan, Estelle and LeToya Luckett present the award for best collaboration to Jamie Foxx and T-Pain for their song “Blame It.”

7:54p.m. - Kahn, Estelle and Lucket also presented Ne-Yo with the award for R&B male artist

8:00 p.m. - Beyonce performs her song titled “Ava Maria” from her CD “I Am Beyonce.”  Then, she performs “Angel” by Sarah McLaughlin. (which was very sad. It was dedicated to Michael Jackson).

beyonce4

8:11 p.m. - During a video segment, Jamie Foxx and Martin Lawrence did a spoof of their characters Sheneneh and Wanda (from the tv shows Martin and In Living Color.

8:15 p.m. - The gospel duo Mary Mary performs their song “God In Me” along with Queen Latifah.

8:21 p.m. - Zoe Saldana and Michelle Nichols present the best actress award to Taraji P. Henson.

8:25 p.m. - Saldana Nichols also presented Keri Hilson with the best new artist award.

8:27 p.m.  - Jamie Foxx performs “She Got Her Own” with Ne-Yo and Fabolous.  “She Got Her Own” is somewhat of a remix to Ne-Yo’s “Miss Independent.”  This is the first time Fabolous has been in the spotlight in a long time.

8:31 p.m. - The next segment featured a few old school musicians.  Keith Sweat performed his old hit “I Wanna.”  The 1990s R&B group Guy performed their old school song titled “I Like.”  Bel Biv Devoe performed “Poison,” which was one of my favorite dance songs of the early 1990s.  That was a a great segment getting to hear the songs of yester-year.

8:43 p.m. - Ciara performs Michael Jackson’s “Heal The World.”  She was also dressed in Michael Jackson-esque clothes.

ciara2

8:45 p.m. - Keyshia Cole and Monica perform a duet to their song “Everything.” These two ladies can definitely sing.  They both had strong vocals and they looked good too.

8:57 p.m. - Actors Jeremy Piven and Marlon Wayans presented the award to Beyonce for best R&B female artist.  No shocker there.  Beyonce always wins everything.  Marlon Wayans said without the Jackson family there would be no Wayans family.  Beyonce also thanks Michael Jackson during her acceptance speech.

9:00 p.m. - Jay-Z performs his song “Death Of The Auto Tune.”

9:10 pm. - The group The O’Jays is getting ready to recieve the lifetime achievment award.  Tevin Campbell, Trey Songz, Tyrese, Johnny Gill pay tribute to O’Jays by performing some of their songs onstage.  Tevin has been away from the music scene during the past 15 years.

9:28 p.m. - After a long-winded speech from Soul Train host Don Cornelius, the group The O’Jays were presented with their lifetime achievment award

9:33 p.m. - The O’Jays performed several of their hit songs.

9:50 p.m. - One of the executives at BET gives a verbal tribute to Michael Jackson.

9:56 p.m. - Alicia Keys and Wyclef Jean receive the humanitarian award.  They both gave a lenghty but inspiring acceptance speech.

10:06 pm. - In a humorous skit, Taraji P. Henson, Tyrese and Ving Rhames recreate their scene from the classic movie “Baby Boy.”  Taraji and Tyrese presented the viewers choice award to T.I. and Rihanna for their song “Live Your Life.”  Rihanna and T.I. weren’t at the awards show so T.I’s wife Tiny accepted the award.

10:12 p.m. - Taraji and Tyrese also present the video of the year award to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies.

10:15 p.m. - Maxwell performs his song “Pretty Wings” from his upcoming CD “Black Summers Night.”

10:25 p.m. - Drake performed his song “You The Best”  with some help from Lil Wayne.  The song is currently number 3 on the Billboard charts.

10:36 p.m. - Janet Jackson walks on the stage accompanied by Jamie Foxx.  She was emotional. But she gave a great speech.  She said “To you, Michael is an icon. To us, Michael is family.” It was a very sad moment when they showed a picture of Michael and Janet together in the background.

10:39 p.m. - Jamie Foxx and Ne-Yo sang “I’ll Be There.  It was the most emotional part of the entire show tonight. Several audience members have tears streaming down their face.

A man calls 911 for police escort to Lil Wayne concert

lil-wayne1

Michael Kruse

Remember that song from 1990 by Public Enemy called “911 Is A Joke?”

A Florida man is learning the hard way that 911 is not really a joke after all.  Twenty-year-old Michael Kruse, of Jacksonville, was arrested by police for falsely calling 911 twice, according to News 4 in Jacksonville.

What was his emergency you ask? He wanted to request a police escort to drive him 345-miles south to Miami so he can see rapper Lil Wayne’s concert.

Police said he might have been under the influence of something, but it’s unknown.

Before you all start saying this man is crazy, keep in mind, the president gets a police escort everywhere he goes.  So does the vice president.  Some celebrities get police escorts too.

This man probably just wated to be treated equally and get the same treatment as some other people get, regardless of his status.

Besides, Lil Wayne is a great rapper and performer.  I’m sure his concert was on and poppin.  Can’t really blame him for trying to attend the concert by any means necessary–even if that means calling 911.

:)
