I agree with you totally.  I always carry a compass in my backpack when I am traveling.  I have found it especially helpful when I come out of a subway/metro station in a foreign country; I immediately pull out the compass, orient it to the map and I&#039;m set.  

A few years ago, I took a course in &quot;Map and Compass Reading&quot; at OCCC and really enjoyed it.  Amazing how much there is to learn about a simple map and compass.
