I'm not sure where you're getting that I hate Julie Powell. Quite the contrary. Read her blog and her book of the same title. My issue isn't with Julie, it's with how her story was paired with Julia's. Julia's story overwhelms, which disservices Julie's story and gives short shrift to Julia's. If you read Julie's book, the way she's dropped in little pieces of Julia's life give a nice frame of reference. In the film, it's like she's Miss Daisy out for a nice, quiet ride. And we enjoy it. But then Julia is Moses parting the seas and releasing our American palates from bondage.
George Lang made the point that two potentially great movies were mashed together to simply make one good one. I concur.
This misstep has nothing to do with Julie or Julia, and everything to do with Nora Ephron.
When you read the book, you'll see what I mean. That said, I hate reviews that talk about how much better the book is than the movie. Frankly, I see them as separate interpretations of the same theme.
One I thought was excellent, one good.

I just saw the movie and started reading Julies blogs. I hate to say this but, you come off like a snot-nosed little #$%, expecting Julie Powell to somehow equate with Julia Child.

Come on.

Julie Powell came off like a hero, who could hardly be expected to come close to Julia Child's mastery.

You sound like someone who has just seen an adorable six year old at her first ballet recital - and can't seem to understand why she doesn't perform like Margot Fonteyn or Pavlova.

Don't be so mean.

Julie Powell is an absolute inspiration to 99.9% of those who saw her movie.

If you don't believe it, why don't you try reading her blog.

If more people saw her the same way you did, we would never have fallen in love with her klutsy, faulty way of doing things. Her drive and love of cooking is what makes her who she is. Not her mastery of - or lack of mastery, so to speak - cooking.

Be nice once in a while. It's a new world. Bush is gone and we're all finally feeling happy to be alive again.
