More time with “What Not to Wear” hair stylist Nick Arrojo

nick-arrojo.jpg

I must confess that sometimes I tune in to the last 20 minutes of “What Not to Wear” just to see hair stylist Nick Arrojo and makeup artist Carmindy do their magic.  I know I’m not the only one. C’mon, admit it.

Anyway, Arrojo has written a new book, “Great Hair: Secrets to Looking Fabulous and Feeling Beautiful Every Day.” I interviewed him recently for my column in today’s Life section, and he’s just as personable as he is on television. The book covers three messages: how to think about your hair, how to do your own hair, how to understand everything to do with hair.

It was a big undertaking, one that took a couple of years. And he did it while overseeing a salon with  staff of 70 and a weekly television series.

He has been with the TLC show since its start, and he said the hair makeover takes about  five hours a week. He meets the “What Not to Wear” client on the set, not before, and they have a conversation when the camera rolls.

“Part of the charm is the experience of that individual being able to communicate with me,” he said. “And me being able to think on the spot. Whatever ideas I’ve got, I’m not going to suggest them until I hear what’s in that person’s head.”

Arrojo has had his own line of hair care products for a couple of years and uses them on the show. Products retail for $11 to $17. He said he wanted a simple product line with simple names.

“Every company has special names for their products so they can market in a unique and innovative way,” he said. “The charm for me is just to say what it is on the bottle so it’s not confusing.”

It’s difficult to confuse names such as Volume Foam and Daily Shampoo. Thanks, Nick.

Carmindy’s new makeup line gets favorable comments

If you’re thinking about trying Carmindy’s new makeup line, Sally Hansen Natural Beauty inspired by Carmindy, check out the recent comment on a blog I posted when the line was introduced.  The chatter was really impressed with everything in the line. Carmindy is the makeup artist on TLC’s “What Not to Wear.”

Nick Arrojo’s new hair products

nick-arrojo-volume-foam.jpgI interviewed Nick Arrojo, the hairstylist on television’s “What Not to Wear” on Friday about his new book, ”Great Hair: Secrets to Looking Fabulous and Feeling Beautiful Every Day.”

More about that in the The Oklahoman and here later, but what I didn’t realize was that he now his own hair products. They’re available at Pure Beauty, which used to be Trade Secrets.

Since I had to be near Penn Square Mall, I stopped by to pick up the Volume Foam.  Arrojo said he uses it often on the show because its lightweight, lifts and thickens.

It was only $15, and I was nearly out of what I’ve been using — ghd Fat Hair Lotion for All-Over Volume, which costs $25. I love it though. Really good stuff.

Here’s hoping Arrojo’s product is just as good.

Ready to give L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin hairspray a try

loreal-elnett-hairspray.jpgWell, I finally used up my can of hairspray and made a mad dash to Target for the L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin hairspray, which landed in the U.S. in October.

This hairspray, at $13.99, is like the mother lode of hairsprays, if you read the message boards. Stylists swear by it, but it hasn’t been available here until Target reeled it in exclusively.

I used the spray yesterday and liked the results.  I bought the one for color-treated hair. I’m all for making my color last longer, even if it’s just a day or two.

Known for its ultra-fine formula, the spray provides hold but disappears as soon as you put a brush through your hair.

It reminds me of Aquage Finishing Spray, which has been my favorite.  Maybe I’ll like L’Oreal Elnett even better.  We’ll see.

Nick Arrojo of “What Not to Wear” launches new book

Nick Arrojo’s book “Great Hair”

Everyone’s favorite hairstylist — Nick Arrojo on TLC’s “What Not to Wear” — reveals his styling secrets in ”Great Hair, Secrets to looking Fabulous and Feeling Beautiful Every Day.”

He tells women how to get a fabulous cut, color and style, as well as helps them better understand their hair type, determine what styles will work for their hair, face shape and lifestyle. He also dispels myths and outdated ideas about hair care.

Arrojo has been working in the industry for 25 years. I’m interviewing him by phone on Friday so if you’ve got any questions, shoot me an e-mail at lmiller@opubco.com.

The book, at $21.95, will make a nice holiday gift if there’s someone on your list who is a fan of Arrojo and ”What Not to Wear.”

Carmindy’s new book

carmindysbook.jpg

Just heard that Carmindy, the makeup artist on television’s “What Not to Wear,” has a new book.

She said she wrote “Get Positively Beautiful”  for every woman who struggles with negative feelings about their beauty. She wanted a book that would change women’s mindset from a negative, flaw-focus to a positive beauty attitude.

She’s going to be traveling the country for book signings. The closest she gets to Oklahoma is a visit to Dallas Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 7700 West Northwest Highway. The phone number is (214) 739-1124.
