L’Oreal’s birthday … makeup specials and hair spray

Elnett hair spray
I mentioned last month that L’Oreal’s 100th anniversary is today, June 4. In honor of the centennial, the company introduced a limited edition 100th anniversary Elnett hair spray and plenty of money saving specials.
You’ll find the hair spray in Target stores. Elnett sells for $13.99 and comes in strong hold, extra strong hold and extra strong hold UV filter.
And let me just say again that Elnett is my favorite hair spray. I’ve been using it since it landed in Target last fall.
But there’s more to this anniversary than hair spray. The company is also offering specials this week at chain drug, food and mass market retailers nationwide, including:
True Match Super-Blendable makeup collection $5.99, orig. $13.95
EverPure haircare collection $5.99 , orig. $6.99
Revitalift skincare collection $9.99, orig. $19.99
Voluminous Volume Building Mascara $4.99, orig. $7.95
Colour Riche Lipcolour $4.99. orig. $8.50
Excellence Haircolor $5.99, orig. $8.99

Anna Kournikova wears Boys & Girls Club of America T-shirt

Anna Kournikova
Tennis star Anna Kournikova wore a T-shirt by Give and Take on a recent episode of “The Rachel Ray Show.” This is the second time Anna has worn her Boys & Girls Clubs of America shirt out and about in New York City. A portion of the proceeds of each T-shirt is donated to Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Give and Take T-shirts cost $50. For more information, go online to www.giveandtaketees.com.
Show some heart with this T-shirt
If you’re not one to wear cutsey hearts on your clothes but you like to at least acknowledge Valentine’s Day, check out this T-shirt from Chewylou Designs. It has HEART on the front and Hope, Empathy, Appreciation, Resilence, Trust on back.
The shirt is the perfect nod to Valentine’s Day and American Heart Month. Alyssa Dinowitz, founder of Chewylou Designs and Athletes Yoga, started making T-shirts when she created the LIVE shirt for Breast Cancer Awareness – in honor of her mother who is fighting the disease for the third time.
A portion of the proceeds from her T-shirt sales support breast cancer research via the GreaterGood Network. Her women’s T-shirt line inspires women with its catchy acronyms and motivational words. See for yourself here.
Target T-shirts, a cheap thrill
An update on the super lightweight Mossimo Black tissue T-shirts from Target I wrote about recently.
I bought a black, long-sleeve scoop neck style, and I’ve worn it twice. It washed up great and looked nice under my 3/4-length gold jacket. For $9.99, it’s a winner. I’m hoping to pick up a few more colors this weekend. What do you think of this plum?
Check out these Mossimo super lightweight T-shirts
If you’re looking for super lightweight T-shirts to layer under jackets or sweaters, search no more.
I found a style I like, and I think you will too, at Target. And at a great price.
Mossimo Black long sleeve tissue T-shirts are lightweight and slightly fitted. I bought the scoop neck, but there’s also a crew neck style as well. Plus they come in several different colors.
All for just $9.99. Such a deal!
A new T-shirt source
I’m always on the hunt for great T-shirts that aren’t super expensive. I was following a live chat on the Washington Post recently and a chatter suggested Lilla P. That’s a Lilla P T-shirt pictured here.
I haven’t heard of this line, but the chatter said the T-shirts are well-made and higher quality than James Pearse. Plus they’re less expensive. Well, that got my attention.
Check it out. The Web site is www.lillap.com.
I must admit, though, that the George T-shirts at Walmart are pretty good and you can’t beat the price. I bought a short-sleeve, V-neck turquoise in mid-summer for about $7, then noticed they were on sale for $5 a couple of weeks ago. I snatched up a white one for next year, but I’m hoping to find George long-sleeve styles for fall.
Fashion tip: T-shirts
Who among us doesn’t have a T-shirt — or maybe a half dozen? We live in them.
They’re comfy and can go with almost anything – jeans or shorts or, if they’re nice enough, under a suit jacket or layered with a dress.
“Harper’s Bazaar Great Style, Best Ways to Update Your Look” by Jenny Levin calls T-shirts the building blocks of a casual wardrobe. Here are “wear it” suggestions from the book:
1. Stick with longer styles. Anything that hits at the hip or below has the most flexibility in what you can wear with it.
2. Pay attention to the weight of the fabric. If it’s thin and a little sheer, it’s best worn under something or doubled up with another piece. Pick a weightier style when wearing it alone.
3. Layering gives new life to your dresses. A lightweight frock can be worn well into fall when paired with a T-shirt. Try it with your sundresses, shirtdresses, jumpers and such. Don’t be afraid of the unconventional. For example, a T-shirt can take a strapless dress from slinky to sporty.
4. Don’t go too loose when layering with dresses. If your top is baggy, it won’t lie properly and you will look sloppy. Thin and fitted T-shirts are best as underpinnings.
5. Slouchy cuts look great under jackets and vests. Look for pieces that have a little movement and don’t hug your hips in an unflattering way.
6. The key to looking smart in a T-shirt is to wear a clean and fresh one. Have one stack for working out and one for wearing out, and don’t mix them. And know when to let go. If it’s yellow and holey, trash it.

Stylin’ in the summer
This chambray wrap dress with flattering V-neck and flared skirt is from The Gap.
Summer brings skimpier clothes. In Oklahoma, when temperatures often reach triple digits by late June, it’s ridiculous to try to cover up from head to toe. You have to show a little bit of skin to keep from sweating to death.
Showing more skin often means bringing attention to flaws and areas of our bodies we would prefer to keep under wraps. Luckily, there are ways to camouflage and hide the flaws, or at least to make it look much more flattering.
Bobbi Schwartz, founder and CEO of The Bobbi Schwartz Group, a Dallas-based personal styling company, says a lot of how you look this summer comes down to dressing to compliment your figure.
“Boot-cut or flare-leg pants are more flattering than narrow-leg pants, for those with hips. And, believe it or not, wide-leg pants are very flattering to the backside, no matter what size or shape your hips are,” says Schwartz. “Somehow, they make the backside look small and shapely. Go figure!”
Clothing style makes a big impression on how someone looks, yet many people end up choosing items for the color or style, rather than finding something that will help create a more flattering image. Here are some simple tips for using clothing to your advantage, this summer and all year:* For those with a tummy, there are T-shirts that are cut in an A-shape that will help hide and distract. Eileen Fischer is a designer that offer such shirts in a variety of colors, with a high-quality fabric and cut. “The T-shirts will take pounds off those that are thicker in the middle,” adds Schwartz.
* V-shaped necklines help many women to get a quick slim look.
* For those with a long waist, opt for shirts or dresses that have a belt, to help with waist definition.
*Women can help keep larger hips in proportion by opting for a slightly flared skirt.
* Find a swimsuit that accentuates your better features and downplays your less flattering ones. Many swimsuit product lines offer such information right on the hang tag. There are suits today that look good on all body shapes and sizes such as Calvin Klein and Magicsuit.
“Longer shorts are very flattering to almost everyone, especially those baby boomers who want to wear a more flattering length and yet something that allows for a little air conditioning,” says Schwartz.
When choosing shorts this summer, those who would like to hide their hips should opt for a slightly wider leg. Those with thinner legs and hips will look better in the narrow-cut shorts, creating a long and lean look.
“If you are doing the short, however, unless you are really tall and thin, stick to wearing at least a short-heeled sandal, to really make the look flattering,” adds Schwartz.
