Deborah Lippmann’s tips for the perfect manicure

Here’s a primer on the perfect manicure  from nail guru Deborah Lippmann, who was on “The Martha Stewart Show” recently. She shared these five tips for a beautiful, durable manicure.

1. Find your shape

To determine the ideal shape for your nails, simply use the contour of your cuticle bed as a guide when filing. File your nails so they’re the same size and shape, working from the outside edge toward the center of the nail.

2. Don’t cut your cuticles

Instead, apply a cuticle remover to help you peel off dead skin around your nails. Be sure to push cuticles back all the way around the nail bed, not just at the base.

3. Moisturize after washing hands

A beautiful manicure begins with healthy nails and cuticles, and moisture is key. Massaging moisturizer into your cuticles, ideally every time you wash your hands, promotes nail growth and blood flow to the nails.

4. Seal those tips

For all layers, apply three vertical strokes, then seal the nail tip with one stroke across. This will extend the life of your manicure.

5. Make it last

You can make your manicure last longer by adding a thin layer of top coat every three days. Also, be sure to allow layers to dry fully before reapplying — doing so allows solvents to evaporate.
