Exfoliate for smooth, glowing skin

Most makeup artists and skin care specialists will tell you that exfoliation is the key to smooth, glowing skin.

Celebrity makeup artist Brett Freedman of Vanitymark makeup agrees that increasing cell turnover is the the secret to a fresh face and clean sheen. Here are three ways to exfoliate, and how to do it properly.

1. Go buff. Freedman loves his Buf-Puf.  You can use it every day with your favorite cleanser. Simply lather up a second time and use the sponge to lightly scrub in a circular motion. Don’t press too hard.

2. Try acid. This is good for oily skin. Look for topical creams, gels and lotions with 8 percent alpha hydroxy acid and use only one to two times per week at night. It tends to dry the skin out and can leave an odd texture as it begins to work, so use sparingly.

3. Get a facial. Head to the doctor or skin care specialist for stronger treatments. Deeper acid peel treatments are like crash dieting — you get all the exfoliation at once, so there’s a long period of redness and peeling and then, wow, flawless skin. Microdermabrasion is another good option for women who don’t want to use acids.
