The media loves her style most of the time, but when she takes what some consider a misstep, watch out.   I’m talking about Michelle Obama. She created a bit of a stir this week when she was photographed in shorts while on her way to the Grand Canyon for a family vacation.

An Associated Press story says Mrs. Obama is no stranger to public scrutiny over her fashion decisions, including exposing her bare arms or wearing expensive sneakers to a soup kitchen. When Anya Strzemien, style editor at The Huffington Post, saw Obama’s shorts, she knew there would be interest.

“I thought the fact that she wore shorts was newsworthy because she’s the first first lady to wear shorts on Air Force One,” Strzemien said. “I was interested as a newsperson because it was a first. A lot of things the Obamas have done have been firsts.”

She posted a poll for readers to explain what they thought: Most were in favor of the outfit, but others thought the shorts were inappropriate or too short.

NBC’s “Today” show poll had similar results with a whopping 300,000 people responding to the vote. The blog post was the show’s most commented-on of 2009, said Dee Dee Thomas, a “Today” senior producer.

Read the rest of the Associated Press story. What do you think about seeing the first lady in shorts?  I say good for her.  Let her enjoy her vacation.

And now–starting at middle LB…

Michelle Obama is a woman of character, she’s fashion, her shorts are ok.

Disrespectful and disgraceful…the “prez” didn’t wear shorts. I pay for her vacation and she should dress appropriately at all times…she is representing our country….privacy, hair curlers and SHORTS are a price you have to pay & give up while in the public eye for this position…must suck to have all those privileges and can’t bother to dress better. Arrogant

[...] her outfit a "Barack-o-lantern". It could have been worse you know, she could have worn this getup again. Or a Che [...]

Leigh, seriously, calm down. without even knowing u, I can tell that by your choice to call the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES “prez” you harbor issues w/ his ethnicity, hence the use of “urban slang.” Get a life. This is not 1950. The First Lady’s reputation does not depend on HER DECISION to wear shorts. Are u kidding? How is the “arrogant” “disrespectful” & “disgraceful” ? You “pay for her vacation”? I am pretty sure that you are miserable, man-less and fat.

I agree with Xian

I also agree with Xian. Plus, they’re not short shorts, they’re just shorts. Just because all the previous first ladies have not had the legs for anything other than cargo pants, doesn’t mean she has to hide hers. Sheesh!

I too agree with Xian. There is no problem with this picture. The First Lady,is of the generation that has balanced her work and her health and family carefully. Why not show-off all that hard work on the treadmill, using weights and doing Pilates. I find it “Sexy” thay my “First Lady” is beautiful in shorts, pants or a “Vera Wang” dress. How many past first ladies, excluding… blue jeans or pants suites can pull off that hat trick? None! How many past first ladies would you want to see in a bathing suit? NONE!!! So Leigh until we can see you in a pair shorts….Don’t be a Hater!!!

her knee caps are bigger than her tits plus that butt is huge kinda hard to hide that bubble butt

Are you guys serious? Bytching about her wearing shorts. What the hell else is she suppose to wear on a vacation to the GRAND CANYON. She’s not going to a political conference. Geez people, she would look a bit out of place if she had worn a formal dress and heels to the Grand Canyon.

Are you all kidding me.This is not a flight on the local Delta puddle jumper, this is Airforce One.In a position such as hers there is a lot to be said about your public appearance. While on that aircraft you not only represent the President of the U.S. but you represent the entire country.Look at the uniforms of the soliders, they probably spent two days getting straight.I find this extremely disrepectful.

Agree with Jim.
Plus, it must suck to be those in the Air Force who have to stand there at attention as this TRASH strolls off of that plane. Michelle and the girls have just been going on one vacation after another as they spend the lottery winnings.

Ugly.
Inappropriate.
She’s stated publicly she hates the job.
It shows.

This picture is GHETTO disgusting. You never saw Mrs. Clinton, Mrs. Bush or Nancy R…..ever, ever put on such a nasty outfit like this one has. It’s not important for her to be the so-called “First Lady”, she’ll be remembered as the the “First Ghetto Lady”. where does she get her outfits and what idiot is saying she’s a great dresser…that person needs two or three pairs of glasses.

Please let me know if you’re looking for a article author for your site. You have some really good articles and I feel I would be a good asset. If you ever want to take some of the load off, I’d love to write some content for your blog in exchange for a link back to mine. Please blast me an email if interested. Many thanks!

I do love the manner in which you have presented this specific challenge and it really does supply me a lot of fodder for thought. On the other hand, coming from what precisely I have observed, I just trust when other opinions stack on that folks stay on issue and don’t start upon a soap box regarding some other news of the day. Yet, thank you for this outstanding point and even though I do not necessarily go along with the idea in totality, I value your point of view.

Amazing, quality post, You should take a look at your pageload period though, I had difficulty loading.
