Fashion designer Vera Wang

Talk continues to bubble about fashion designer Vera Wang being one of the contestants on next season’s “Dancing with the Stars.”  Wang, who turns 60 on June 27, trained as a figure skater and competed in the 1968 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She even designed outfits for Olympic skaters Nancy Kerrigan and Michelle Kwan.

Wang, a former fashion edtitor for Vogue, was named the CFDA’s Womenswear Designer of the Year award in 2005.

E! is reporting that Wang already has signed on with the dance show.

According to People magazine, she said of the rumors: “I don’t know yet. Part of me does want to do it and part of me doesn’t.”

Dolce & Gabbana to lower prices

It’s no secret that the economy has pinched the high-end fashion industry. Now comes word that Dolce & Gabbana  is finding ways to reduce the cost of  its luxury goods.

Women’s Wear Daily reports that the reductions of  between 10 and 20 percent will occur across the board for both the main and D&G lines, starting with spring 2010. Examples of price changes include: a dress will cost $1,469, down from $2,295; a leather bomber jacket will be priced at $1,499, compared with $2,296.

Lower prices came about after designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana talked their suppliers and manufacturers into a collective, cost-effective approach — everyone from button suppliers to mills.

“The idea is to peel off the superfluous because there are too many clothes, too many seasons, too much advertising — too much of everything that is tacked onto the final price. We want to go back to how things were 20 years ago,” Dolce said.  “This is the only way to save the market and our companies. It’s time to turn the page.”

Science Museum Oklahoma presents back-to-school fashion show, trunk show

Fashion can show up in the most unlikely places. Who would have thought that a back-to-school fashion and trunk show would find its way to the Science Shop at Science Museum Oklahoma in Oklahoma City.

Smarten Up! Science Is in Fashion will feature the latest in science fashion and accessories from 5:30 to 8 p.m. June 18.

“Science is cool and that includes fashion,” said Amanda Foote, store manager of The Science Shop and resident fashionista. “Just like the museum, our goal is to excite kids and parents about science. We want to dispel the myth that science is geeky and what better way than a fashion show with some of the hippest clothing and accessories in the city?”

The Science Shop worked with Gap Kids and Baby Gap at Penn Square Mall and Sweet ‘n Sassy to show how science is in fashion every day. Along with the fashion show, the event will include appetizers and cocktails, discounts from the Science Shop and Gap stores and door prizes.

While you’re there, check out the Science Shop’s makeover from an ordinary souvenir shop to a trendy boutique featuring unusual and interesting educational toys, trendy clothes and accessories.

Catherine Zeta-Jones … How to achieve her hairstyle

My inbox often gets filled with information about celebrity style. The latest such e-mail focused on Catherine Zeta-Jones’ hair at the  37th AFI Lifetime Achievement Awards. Here’s how stylist David Babaii said he achieved her look:

****************************************************

After gently towel-drying her hair to remove excess water, I warmed a small amount of Hair Polish in the palms of my hands before applying it through the hair.  I’ve found warming this product actually boosts its ability to seal the cuticle, while repairing and strengthening each strand. Not to mention the shine!

Next, I dried her hair using my David Babaii for WildAid Blow Dryer with the nozzle attachment and a large round brush to smooth hair straight. Try to avoid any metal coated brushes. These brushes only generate unnecessary heat and will cause hair to be baked not dried. I sectioned her hair first: top, sides and back. To begin, I started by drying the nape area first and then proceeded until her entire head was dry.

Finally, to achieve her sleek straight look I went through her hair with my David Babaii for WildAid Styling Iron with Tourmaline and Ceramic technology. I did this by once again dividing her hair into three parts again: top, sides and back. Starting at the nape area and taking small sections at a time, I combed the hair before running the flat iron through.  For the mega watt shine, I applied an additional amount of Hair Polish after the entire head was straightened. This created her mirror finish.

Pretend you’re in the tropics with Alba Hawaiian Sea Salt Body Scrub

Alba Hawaiian Sea Salt Scrub

Alba Hawaiian Sea Salt Scrub

It’s no secret that I love anything tropical. If I can’t get to Hawaii, I want to at least have beauty products and candles around that remind me of tropical fruits and flowers.

Now I guess I’ll go in search of Alba Hawaiian Sea Salt Body Scub. Press info says the scrub is made from Pacific sea salt blended with tropical nut oils and invigorating citrus which gently exfoliate, detoxify and moisturize  for a healthy glow.

It will be a nice complement to the Alba Passion Fruit Body Wash that’s already in my shower.

The scrub costs $10.95. Look for it at CFS, Target, Whole Foods and Wild Oats, or online at www.albabotanica.com. I was at Wal-mart recently and saw a good assortment of Alba products, too.

Fur real — Michelle Obama and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy don’t wear it

Michelle Obama and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy have more in common than just being stylish first ladies. Both have announced to the world that they are fur free.

It all started a couple of days ago when PETA cornered French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy about wearing fur. She doesn’t, so if anyone saw her in a picture wearing a fur it must have been years ago or, if it was recent, the fur was fake, she said.

Now comes an announcement that Obama is fur free, too. Obama and Bruni-Sarkozy, a former supermodel, have met twice in recent months and both have ignited the fashion world with their clothing choices.

“I do not wear, buy or own fur,” replied Bruni-Sarkozy in a letter to PETA senior vice president Dan Mathews. “Every designer who kindly lends me clothes for public appearances can tell you that I do not accept … fur pieces, even when they’re only a small part of the outfit.”

As news of Bruni-Sarkozy’s fur-free policy broke, Obama’s deputy press secretary Semonti Mustaphi also announced,  ”Mrs. Obama does not wear fur.”

“For Michelle Obama,  respecting animals is obviously part of the social progress that she and her husband are working so hard to promote,” Mathews said. ”By officially rejecting fur, these two style icons will make people everywhere see fur for whta it is: old-fashioned and cruel.”

Soccer star David Beckham is also the star of the fall/winter underwear advertising campaign for Emporio Armani. The campaign was unveiled at Selfridges in London. The image of an underwear-clad Beckham covered the entire front facade of the store.

For the campaign kick-off, Beckham wore a navy blue Giorgio Armani single-breasted suit before meeting 300 fans who had previuously qualified for a VIP meed-and-greet.

“David has a great sense of style and is an inspiring role model — this is what makes him the perfect partner for Emporio Armani underwear,” said designer Giorgio Armani. “I am excited that David Beckham’s new campaign was unveiled exclusively in his home country and where better than at such an iconic retail destination as Selfridges.”
