5 beauty tips to lighten and brighten eyes without surgery

Nothing against plastic surgeons, but I’m a bit of a chicken when it comes to slicing my skin. Same goes for needles filled with plumpers and such.  So, I read everything I can about products that help minimize fine lines and wrinkles, and tone and tighten my skin. If it can be done without a cut or a poke, I’m interested.

That’s why “5 Beauty Tips to Lighten and Brighten Eyes Without Surgery” in the subject line of an e-mail caught my interest.

Lifting and brightening eyes doesn’t have to take the work of an expert plastic surgeon, the e-mail said. All a woman really needs are a few quick fixes in her back pocket and her eyes will never have looked brighter or lighter.

I was hooked. So I read on.

What followed was Nicole Flevaris’ stash of tips that every woman should know. Flevaris is a beauty expert and co-owner of Outlashe Eyelash Extensions.

Shape that brow: Get your brows stenciled for a perfect and even look. Stenciling works wonders in pening up your face and making eyes look lifted. Go for a cleanign at least every two to three weeks to prevent an unkempt brow.

Extend yourself to the max: Having eyelash extensions applied will instantly open up the eye and make it brighter. “Our cleints are always being asked if they just came back from vacation or if they had any work done after they get their first set of Outlash Eyelash Extensions. These babies work like magic!”

Not your average wrinkle cream:  We have heard of StriVectin and other wrinkle and dark spot erasers, but one secret not many women know is that using Preparing H under your eyes is a sure fire way to brighten eyes and reduce bags — however you can only use this once a month at the most, so save it for a special occasion.

The new concealer: Many women are often only wearing a concealer or corrector under their eyes. This is a thing of the past. Mix a cream blush in hues of peach and pink  into your foundation to couunteract the darkness of the skin. This trick is used by makeup artists and works better than concealers, Nicole said. She recommends China Doll Color Veil by Napoleon Perdis, which can be used on eyes, cheeks and lids. “I am all about the all-in-one products.” One note: Napoleon Perdis will be at Ulta in Oklahoma City on July 11. For info, click the link at the bottom of this post.

Don’t forget your brow bone: When applying eye shadow, it’s important to always sweept a light white or cream shimmer shadow along the underneath of your brow line. This gives a brighter, lighter appearance and helps lift the brow for a more open eye.

Here comes the bride … and she rented her gown

gownIf you’re engaged, planning a wedding or hoping to get married soon, here’s some information that might be of interest.

According to industry research from IBISWorld, spending on rented bridal gowns is expected to grow 7.5 percent to $43 million, up from $40 million in 2008.

At the same time, wedding gown sales are expected to decrease 2.8 percent this year, reaching just $973 million. The decline is considerable, but not as steep as the 4.2 percent drop experienced in 2008. Interestingly, the industry has seen declines since 2001.

According to research, other wedding statistics are slipping, too. Compared to 2008, the amount spent on wedding planners is expected to drop 4.2 percent to $785 million this year. And the average cost of a wedding is expected to drop 8 percent in 2009 to just $20,000; in 2007, the average was $30,000.

“The recession is expected to exacerbate the already decliing marriage rate, as couples put off the big day until the time is right financially,” said Toon van Beeck, senior analyst with IBISWorld.  “Spending will undoubtedly be impacted by such postponements, and these cost-cutting measures will start from the purchase of an engagement ring all the way to the end of the honeymoon.”

What do you think of Kate Gosselin’s hair?  I’m not a regular watcher of the TLC series “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” but I must say her hairstyle (and her style transformation) intrigues me.

She’s gone from brown hair to bleached blonde and streaked. The crown is short and punkish with an asymmetrical side sweep.  And word is that women are going into salons asking for the Kate cut.  Speak up, what do you think?

Kate Gosselin, star of TLC's hit show, Jon & Kate Plus 8, speaks Wednesday May 13, 2009, at the Frauenthal Center in Muskegon, Mich.

The spring 2010 menswear shows are going on in Milan.

Here’s a peek at a few of the more amusing outfits that were on the runway. Tomorrow I’ll post pictures of the more traditional offerings, but today, let’s smile. Surely that’s what the designers had in mind.

StriVectin Instant Facial Sculpting Cream

You still have time to enter the drawing for this week’s product giveaway.  This week’s freebie is StriVectin Facial Sculpting Cream, loaded with plant-based peptides and other extracts that combine to reduce the appearance of wrinkles as “it visibly lifts, tightens and tones the skin.”

According to StriVectin, the cream also increases skin elasticity and firmness, and helps improve the support structure of the skin and even out skin tone. The multi-functional cream has both an immediate and long-term effect on the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, crow’s feet, nasolabial folds and ear wrinkles, too. (Now that’s one I haven’t heard of before.) It also helps to redfine the cheekbones and jawline, making the face look more youthful, sculpted and defined.

The antiaging cream retails for $79. To be included in the drawing, send an e-mail with your name and mailing address to fashionmatters@opubco.com. One winner will be drawn from the entries. Deadline is midnight June 25.

Tuesday is National Pink Day

pink-lipsTuesday is National Pink Day. Who knew?

So, let’s all get our pink on.

One of the easiest ways to celebrate is with pink lipstick. Chances are you probably have a tube in your bag or on your vanity. And a pink pout is oh-so stylish these days. Pink nails are a no-brainer, too.

Flash back to your preppy days with a pink polo. Or embrace your inner Lily Pulitzer with a pink floral dress. Or how about a Pepto-colored tote or rubber flip-flops?

pink-balloonsI got an e-mail  today about the ultimate pink drink, a margarita made with Gran Centenario Rosangel, the world’s first-ever hibiscus infused (pink) tequila. Here’s the recipe — if you want to celebrate National Pink Way in your own way!

Rosangel Margarita

2 oz Rosangel

1 oz of Cranberry Juice

½ oz Premium Orange Liqueur

½ oz of Lime Juice

¼ oz of Orange Juice

Preparation:

Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a coupe glass.

In the world of fashion, it’s always about what’s coming next. The menswear spring 2010 shows are happening now in Milan.  Here’s an excerpt from the New York Times.

MILAN — With fresh color and a firm silhouette in soft fabrics, the menswear 2010 season has opened in Milan with a clear vision: put creativity and craftsmanship into clothes that are for real.

The climate change is evident — but not essentially depressing. As the designer Tomas Maier said about his powerful show melding formal and casual on Sunday: “This is not a time to dumb down — it is a time to give men things that have good design and are better made — and you have to excite them.”
