Lashes — long may they grow

lashfood.jpg

Who among us doesn’t want long, lush lashes? Sometimes we need a little help, though. And I’m not talking extensions.

You’ve probably heard of lash enhancers. Apply to the base of the lashes and, wow, in two or three weeks your lashes appear thicker and longer. There are a lot of these products, including RevitaLash, MD Lash Factor and neu Lash. I’ve used both RevitaLash and neu Lash. Both are good. But here’s one I had not heard of before – LashFood.

I got press info from the company sharing the news that actress Kyra Sedgwick, star of “The Closer,” had purchased a tube.  LashFood is a new, natural conditioning stimulant for thicker, strong lashes with results in only two to four weeks.

“Long, full eyelashes have always symbolized femininity and exudes Hoollywood glamour,” said Jane Kim, president and founder of LashFood.  Used to be either you had them or you didn’t. And if you didn’t, you could always opt for falsies. Lashes, I mean.

LashFood uses natural ingredients including Biotin, an essential vitamin, Arginine, a natural amino acid, and root and herbal extracts.  The LashFood applicator is similar to a liquid eyeliner applicator. Apply nightly along the root of the lashes, but if you want results faster, apply both morning and night. It works on brows, too. Listen up everyone who plucked their brows too thin.

LashFood retails for $129 and will last up to five months. Check it out or order a tube at www.lashfood.com.

Are you ready for bright eyeshadows?

Brrrrr, I do not like cold weather.  And just my luck, I have to be out much of the day returning clothes that we photographed yesterday for the February OKC N Style glossy section.

Even though it’s mid-January, and we’re likely to be assaulted by more bouts of bitter cold,  I keep thinking about spring. Maybe it’s because in a few weeks I’ll be working on spring fashion and beauty stories. Yes, spring comes early in the fashion business. (Clothes were shown on the runway back in September.)

Anyway, local makeup artist Lilly Stone was telling me during the shoot that bright eye shadows were back big time for spring. Think in-your-face blue, fuchsia and yellow. We’ll talk more about that later, but here’s an early look at bright eyes. Check it out.

No Oklahomans on new season of “Make Me A Supermodel”

The second season of “Make Me A Supermodel” premieres at 9 p.m. March 4 on Bravo, but, alas, there will be no contestants from Oklahoma competing for the big prize.

The show follows 16 super wannabes as they compete for the $100,000 prize, a contract with New York Model Management, a fashion pictorial in Cosmpolitan magazine and the chance to become the next supermodel.

Tyson Beckford returns as the show’s host.

A casting special for “Make Me A Supermodel” will air at 10 p.m. Feb. 7. To see video clips of the models, click here.

Get Salma Hayek’s Golden Globe look

salma hayek at the Golden Globes

The public relations machines keep churning out details about different celebrities’ looks during the Golden Globe awards. Here’s the word about Salma Hayek, who looked beautiful.

“Salma’s makeup look was directly inspired by her dress,” said NARS makeup artist Matthew Vanleeuwen.  “She chose a very neutral colored dress and wanted to make sure her makeup look would pop.  I made her eyes the focus and added a lot of rich, jewel skin tones and fresh color to her cheeks and lips.  Her look was very classic and chic, with some modern textures.”

Here is Matthew’s step-by-step to recreate Salma’s look:

Eyes:·         Apply the China Blue Single Eyeshadow to top and bottom lash line. Matthew’s tip: “I love using navy colors because they make the whites of the eyes pop.”]

 ·         Next, use the Corfu Cream Eyeshadow as a base, all over eyelid

 ·         Use the golden champagne side of the Alhambra Duo Eyeshadow on lid

·         Then, use the Bengali Single Eyeshadow all along the lash line, rubbing it into the lash line, deepening the outer corner of the eye, creating shading

 ·         Curl the eyelashes and apply 2 coats of Black Orchid Mascara on lashes

 ·         Go back over top lash line with the Night Clubbing Eyeshadow  and use what is left on the brush under the eye to define it. Matthew’s tip:“This shade is perfect to create a smokey eye – it gives a rich sparkle at the lash line with undertones of green and gold.”

Complexion:

·         Use the Brightening Serum to make skin glow and apply the Makeup Primer

·         Apply the Firming Foundation and set with the Loose Powder

 Lips

·         Use the Marnie Lipliner Pencil and Tutti Fruity Lipstick

·         Next, mix the Boogie Nights and Greek Holiday Lipglosses and apply them over the lipstick

Blush

·         Apply the Desire Blush to the apple of cheeks. Matthew’s tip: “I use a powder brush to apply blush.  I find that a bigger brush makes a much softer wash of color.”

*.        Next, use the Laguna Bronzer with short, back and forth stokes from the back of cheekbone forward, to blend

Keep your skin in tip-top shape this winter

New York City dermatologist and skin pathologist Dr. Craig Austin offers these tips to keep your skin looking and feeling good this winter.

Don’t get into hot water.  Avoid very long, very hot showers. Too much time in hot water can deplete needed oils, drying your skin. Try to keep your showers to 5  or 10 minutes.

Watch your favorite soaps. Traditional soaps can be harsh. Austin suggests gentler brands such as Dove, Aveeno, Purpose and Neutrogena. Perfume also can be irritating, so choose unscented products. Anti-bacterial soaps can dry the skin and Austin said he’s not  convinced that they really prevent infection as much as we would like them to, so use them sparingly.

Good chemistry. Patients often ask what differentiates the better moisturizers, but basically better moisturizers absorb water and maintain the lipid membrane.  Look for moisturizers that contain hyaluronic acid, which absorbs water. Put it on yoru lips and you’ll look like you just had a collagen injection.

CoEnzyme 10 is also ideal.  It’s an antioxidant and attracts water. A lot of products also include green tea as an ingredient. It’s not just a fad. Green tea is an excellent antioxidant and also is an anti-inflammatory, so it’s good for skin that’s dry, inflamed or exposed to sun. AB eye is a nourising serum that delivers the super hydration benefits of hyaluronic aid to soothe and smooth the eye area while restoring a a natural desired appearance and contains vitamins A, C, E, Co-Q10, Green Tea and antioxidants to protect from free radical damage.

AB Sun obstructs both UVA and UVB-broad spectrum wavelengths. It also serves as a moisturizer with or without sun exposure, but don’t underestimate the sun during the winter.

Eat and drink right.  What’s good for your heart is usually good for your skin. Make sure you get enough Omega 3 fatty acid in yoru diet. Your body doesn’t make it, so you’ll need to consume it. One of the best sources is oily fish, including, salmon, fresh tuna, mackerel and sardines.  Don’t like fish? Try walnuts, spinach, seeds such as sesame or tahini sauce, which is made from sesame, hummus or eggs.  There are also Omega 3 supplements. And stay well hydrated.
