New nail colors for spring and how they work with fashion trends

cnd-nail-polish.jpg

I’m already tired of winter. Cold weather, coats and heavy clothes. I want something new, fresh, spring-like.

One of the easiest ways to ease into the season without looking silly is with a new nail polish.  Creative Nail Design’s team of nail stylists painted thousands of fingers and toes for the spring fashion shows in New York, London and Paris. Here’s how the nail polish trends break down:

The No. 1 designer favorite color and look at the spring 2009 shows? Opaque flesh tone to elongate hands and match clean faces. CND’s Cocoa was seen at Nina Ricci, Max Azria, Halston, Jason Wu, Thakoon, Peter Som and others.

Top nail trends:

Whitewashes : Creamy and iridescent white shades.

Shades of gold: Whether 24-karat or honey bronze, bling abounds.

Gothic tones: A trace of red? Hint of blue? Anything goes, as long as it’s almost black.

Solid foundation: Opaque nudes — not just for the face anymore.

Blue mood: From navy to deep sky, it’s all about blue.

cndnailpolish2.jpg

Red again: From bright Wildfire to dark Decadence.

Here’s more detail:

Role reversal: Dark toes and light fingertips may be big now, but some designers led a change from the norm, giving fingers a dash of dark, with shades like Fedora and Nail Nor, and using nudes on toes. Think toes that Twinkle. Still others preferred a monochrome look, where the red-viole shade Wildfire raged on both fingers and toes.

All in favor: The eyes, and the nails, had it when it came to beauty trends. While lips were neutral or pale pink, eyes flashed with silver, iridescence or vivid color. There were cat eyes, smoky eyes and dark eyes ringed with heavy black liner while nails were drenched in opaque red and blue creams or sheer whites. Cheeks were often neutral and hair was easy and undone, with parts, ponytails and braids. Loose chignons featured fly-aways for a messy look, while texture and volume gave energy to long, down hair.

Exotic inspiration: There was plenty of Spanish, and a bit of Moroccan, with earthy sophisticates and a muted palette were contrasted with bright mineral blue and coral shades. Fingers flashed with a customized Tiger Eye bronze. At Louis Vuitton, deep shiny burgundy nails in Decadence/Nail Noir blend matched with dark red lips.

Naughty and nice: Peplums were plentiful at numerous shows, ranging from tuxedo-like to men’s suit style, and pants, including the cigarette, cpari, cropped and wide leg variety. High-waisted pants emphasized midsections as did pieces such as peplumed biker jackets and dresses. Bondage elements such as bandage-wrapped skirts, leather jackets, S&M caps and corsets contrasted with feminine looks such as backless dresses, silk ruffle blouses and pencil skirts. Demure manicures in sheer French Pink added to the innocent deception.

Decade to decade: Large bold patterns, maxi length dresses and sexy sheer caftans provided a 1970s chic feeling. Short shorts, blousy tops and draped chiffon column dresses enhanced the vibe, which was fast-forwarded to the ’80s, thanks to short skirts and loose hip-length jackets with rolled up sleeves. Metallic manicures from Cappuccino to 24K hit the retro mark.

Icy sculptures: Folded fabrics emphasized structured geometry. Exaggerated flared skirts and muted floral prints. The mostly white and silver palette of  chic dresses and tops were contrasted by two blue and champagne dresses, and plenty of shine. Translucent fabrics further heightened the icy effect. To elongate and and exaggerate the limbs, manicures and pedicures in foundation tones such as Cocoa gave a modern finish.

Aretha Franklin’s bow hat hits a high note

aretha-franklin.jpg

Laugh if you want, but Aretha Franklin’s super-size, jewel-studded bow hat is a big hit with American women.  Mr. Song Millinery in Detroit started receiving calls almost as soon as Franklin hit her last note at the inauguration.

Luke Song designed the hat for Franklin, a longtime customer. Since inauguration day, he’s sold about 1,000 of the $179 piece that the singer’s style was based on.

He also plans to introduce a line of hats next month inspired by the piece. Song will show the 12-piece collection at a trade show in Las Vegas. The company’s hats are sold in 500 U.S. stores.

10 cheap and easy beauty fixes

teabags2.jpg

Puffy eyes? Dark under eye circles? Help is as close as the kitchen.

Dr. David Bank, founder and director of the Center for Dermatology , Cosmetic and Laser Surgery and author of of “Beautiful: Every Woman’s Guide to Looking Her Best at Any Age,” offers these quick and easy tips for fixing your skin at home  in less than 5 minutes.

1.       Puffy eyes.  Soak some cotton pads in cold milk and place on the eyes for 5 minutes to soothe them and reduce puffiness.

2.      Bad blemish. Combine one-quarter teaspoon of table salt with one cup of water. Dip a piece of tissue into the mixture and press against blemish for one minute.

3.       Red spots.  Apply a small amount of Afrin decongestant nose spray to the red blemish.  It will get the red out within 30-60 seconds and last up to 12 hours.

4.      Cold sore.  Mix regular foundation with a few drops of moisturizer and apply with a damp cosmetic sponge or Q-tip.  Apply lip balm or lipstick with a Q-tip to avoid contamination.

5      Break outs. Hold a warm compress on the break out for 5 minutes to open it up. Once open, it should go away in 24 hours.

6.     Out of zit cream. Dab Neosporin or other anti-bacterial products found in your medicine cabinet on the pimple to clear up the affected area. Stay away from the toothpaste! It will dry out your skin but does nothing to unblock your pores, where the problem lies.

7.      Body odor.  Apply your deodorant at night before you go to bed. Your body temperature is higher so the deodorant will penetrate more deeply into the sweat duct. It will continue to block wetness the next day even if you shower.

 8.    Dark under eye circles. Makeup helps but for lasting results apply an eye cream with caffeine in it under the eye. Rub in for 15 seconds. No eye cream? Ttry tea bags.

 9.    Dry skin.  Slather on a rich moisturizer when your skin is still damp from your bath and shower. Takes just a few minutes and the damp skin helps trap and hold the moisture in better.

10. No body moisturizer. Extra Virgin Olive Oil will do the trick.

RED Hearts, a new trendspotting service by teens for teens

Here’s something worth a look if you’ve got teen girls or nieces.  “RED the Book” editor Amy Goldwasser, with I Heart Daily, has launched RED Hearts, a national trendspotting service for teens by teens.

RED Hearts correspondents are the writers and reporters on fashion, beauty, news and entertainment for a teenage audience.

Beginning today, RED Hearts will be available for free every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday through February. Readers can visit www.redthebook.com or www.iheartdaily.com, or subscribe to the I Heart Daily newsletter, for style and culture recommendations.

Written by a team of 58 published “RED the Book” authors reporting from both coasts and everywhere in between, RED Hearts’ goal is to fill the void in the teen market by providing girls ages 13 and older with recommendations on everything from acne treatments to how to find just the right Bob the Builder-Gossip Girl balance when wearing flannel.

“RED Hearts puts a name to one of the great truths of being a teenager — they look to each other before anyone else for advice. What are you listening to? What are you wearing? Where did you find that?” said Goldwasser. “After nearly three years of immersion in the lives of hundreds of teen girls, I found that every one of them is a natural critic, every day. They’re endlessly curious about what’s next. RED Hearts gives  their first-hand opinions, their wildly varied interests and voices and wit, a national media outlet.”
