More Black Friday shopping tips

Shop early, shop smart.

That’s probably the best advice for Black Friday shoppers. Sure, who wants to crawl out of bed just hours after stuffing yourself with pecan pie and turkey. But if you want  a deal, the day after Thanksgiving is the day to get it. I included tips in today’s column, but here are a few more.

* Be wary of deals with quantity limits. If a store only has 10 items at the price, go elsewhere.

* The idea is to save money, get good deals. No impulse buys.

* Shop alone if that works best or team up with friends or family members to attack separate stores and separate sections of a store.

* Timing is everything. Arrange stores by opening time from early to late.

* Identify what you want to buy, what you stores you need to go to and what time they open.

* Save receipts and a know a store’s return policy.

* Check out online Web sites such as http://bfads.net/ , www.blackfriday.info/  and www.theblackfriday.com/ that already have store sale ads and information. Don’t assume these are correct. Check the circulars on Thanksgiving Day for any changes and other savings.

Michelle Obama style guide in the works

Michelle Obama is getting her own fashion book

The New York Posts reports that a former Mademoiselle magazine editor has been signed to write a “Michelle Obama Style Guide,” due out next spring.

Carrie Feron, vice president of Avon Books, said: “Not since Jackie O have we had a first lady become a fashion icon. Michelle Obama will be one of history’s most vibrant first ladies; she has a distinctive style that every American woman can aspire to, whether the consumer is a Target shopper or some one more likely to be found on Miracle Mile.”

Hollywood’s 10 Hottest Tots … anyone interested?

suri-cruise-picture1.jpg

Suri Cruise … a hot tot.

Pardon my ignorance, but I didn’t even realize that Forbes.com had an annual list of “Hollywood’s 10 Hottest Tots.”

This is the just the second year for the list, but how could I have missed something so — um, well — newsworthy? How long will it be before we have a Top 10 Best Dressed Tots list?

Anyway, little Miss Suri Cruise, 2-year-old daughter of Tim Cruise and Katie Holmes, tops the list, bumping off Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, who sat at No. 1 last year.

Forbes.com, which ranked celebrity children 5 years old and younger based on media attention and their parents’ popularity, said Suri  popped up in more news articles and blogs than her peers.

Two more of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s six children made the list –  Zahara Jolie-Pitt, 3, is in third place; and Pax Jolie-Pitt, 4, is fourth on the list.

Rounding out the top 10:

Sam Alexis Woods, daughter of Tiger Woods and his wife, Elin.

Cruz Beckham, son of David and Victoria Beckham.

Matilda Rose Ledger, daughter of Michelle Williams and the late Heath Ledger.

David Banda, son of Madonna and Guy Ritchie.

Sean Preston Federline, son of Britney Spears and Kevin Federline.

Sam Sheen, daughter of Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen.

Fashion and first-time first ladies not always a good fit

first-lady-fashuion.jpg

This Jan. 20, 1003 file photo shows President Clinton and his wife Hillary Rodham Clinton waving to the crowd as they walk down 15th Street in Washington during the presidential inaugural parade.

If you’re still interested in first lady fashion, here’s one about how first-tiime first ladies often make fashion makes.

NEW YORK (AP) — When Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton arrived at the White House, they brought with them styles that suited their hometowns in Texas and Arkansas, but that wouldn’t have held up in any fashion capital.

Tastemakers have higher hopes for Michelle Obama, who is expected to fill her closet at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue with sophisticated styles that match her modern image but maintain the sensibility inherent to Chicago.

The image of Obama walking the inaugural parade route in something like the domed, wide-brimmed hat that has haunted Clinton since 1993 seems unlikely. And she probably won’t show up to the inaugural ball in mother-of-the-bride-style gowns with dyed-to-match pumps like Bush has worn — twice.

Over time, both Clinton and Bush did grow more accustomed to their new surroundings, and their wardrobe reflected that.
