“Heidi Klum: The E! True Hollywood Story” airs tonight

heidi-klum.jpg“Heidi Klum: The E! True Hollywood Story” premieres at 8 p.m. Friday on E!

Here’s a bit of background, if you’re not familiar with Heidi Klum. The German bombshell and supermodel is more than just a pretty face. She has graced the cover of almost every well-known fashion magazine and dominated the runway as a leading spokesperson for Victoria’s Secret.

After establishing herself in the fashion world, Klum took on the role of TV producer and star, creating and hosting the Emmy-nominated reality series “Project Runway.” Now, she opens up about her lucky break, her sizzling romance with singer/songwriter husband Seal and their blended family of five. She also discloses her struggles to make it in the highly-competitive world of modeling and how it feels to finally be at the top of her game – at home and on the runwayThe episode includes family photos from Klum’s childhood in Germany and original footage from the “Model ’92″ contest that launched her career – a European TV event in which Klum beat out 25,000 other hopefuls. In addition, the special features material from Klum’s first Victoria’s Secret runway show, plus intimate backstage footage from some of her earliest modeling gigs.Industry insiders and close friends, including Tim Gunn and Michael Kors, speak candidly about her personal and professional challenge.

Some excerpts from the episode:

Heidi Klum, on winning the “Model ’92″ contest in Germany that launched her career: “I won $300,000. I was 18 years old. I had no idea how much $300,000 was to be quite honest with you. Everyone else got a car. I was kind of looking at them. I’m like, ‘I wish I would have gotten the car.’ ”

Tim Gunn, mentor, “Project Runway,” on Klum and the success of the show:  ”I don’t believe for a moment she could have ever anticipated that it would become this cultural phenomenon.”

Heidi Klum, on struggling to get work early in the business: “I wasn’t really tall enough, skinny enough, and my face wasn’t unusual enough. I was a little bit too girl next door.”

Heidi Klum, on her family: “It is hard to have a family when you’re busy, but it’s all about, you know, what you want to do in life. We wanted to have a big family and for us that was more important than our busy schedules.”

Spring’s coming: A weekend at the Dallas Market Center

I’m heading to the Dallas Market Center this morning to check out the spring apparel and accessory offerings. In the world of fashion, spring comes in September and October and fall makes a showing in February and March.

Topsy turvy, I know, but you get used to it.

Actually, I’ll be at market Friday morning. Today I plan do a little shopping with my friend Bonnie Bing, fashion writer for the Wichita Eagle. Our plan is to hit Saks Off Fifth and Neiman’s Last Call in the Grapevine Mills mall.

“It’s all about the money, honey,” as another friend, Victoria Woods, Oklahoma’s ”Financial Diva,” says. In this case, saving some.

It’s always fun to check out stores we don’t have here. Not that Oklahoma doesn’t have great stores. It does. But with the economy tanking, it’s a great excuse to shop discount and watch the budget. Can I even use the word “budget” in the same blog as Saks and Neiman’s?

Anyway, for those who don’t know, Saks Off 5th and Neiman’s Last Call are the discount outlets of the luxury retailers, offering designer clothing and accessories, as well as some home furnishings, at savings of 40 to 70 percent off.

Friday and Saturday will be all work, listening to trend reports, watching fashiondallas-market-center.jpg shows, talking to Oklahoma retailers, checking out showrooms.  Dallas Market Center, pictured here, is where retailers from across the country come to buy products ranging from home furnishings, gifts, decorative accessories, lighting, garden accessories and gourmet items to textiles, fashion accessories and women’s, men’s, children’s and western apparel. The Oct. 23-26 market is geared to women’s apparel and accessories.

Come Saturday evening, after pounding the tile floors for two days, I’ll be more than ready to sit and sip at the 33rd annual Dallas Fashion Awards. In past years, Bonnie and I have changed into our cocktail finery in one of the women’s restrooms. There just wasn’t time to go back to to the hotel and change, so we traipsed the block or two to the car for the clothes, then back to the market to change, then back to the car to leave our work clothes. My feet are always throbbing by the time I get to the hotel about 11:30 that night. (Yes, it’s a great job and I’m not complaining, but my feet sometimes do.)

This year’s 2008 Fashion Excellence Award will be presented to Hervé Léger by Max Azria. Max Azria is the designer behind his signature Max Azria and BCBG lines, too. The event will also feature the Herve Leger spring 2009 fashion show and the Dallas Fashion Award winners in eight categories, including bridge/designer and accessories.

It will be a busy weekend. Good thing I plan to squeeze in a little girl time before I start to work.

Fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi’s new book, “How to Have Style”

isaac-book.jpg

Fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi has written a book that he hopes will allow women to bring out their own fashion inspiration. Fashion and style are about personal inspiration, whatever gets you motivated every single day, he said.

“How to Have Style” ($30) focuses on 12 real women facing real wardrobe issues.  As the women find their own style, Mizrahi helps them solve problems — tight budget, full figure, petite figure, lack of time — and look at their closet differently.

Feel the buzz: Lancome’s new vibrating mascara in stores on Wednesday

Get ready, mascara lovers. Lancome’s new battery-powered vibrating mascara, Oscillation, goes on sale Wednesday.

The mascara coats lashes 360 degrees for what the company calls the most fabulous fringe ever.

oscillation6.jpg

More than 13,000 beauty fans are already on the waiting list. A limited first-edition supply of Oscillation was available in July and all pieces sold out in one day.

Lancome says the mascara leaves lashes looking extraordinarily extended, separated and multiplied. Simply comb through lashes and get ready for the transformation.

Oscilation is available at all Lancome counters and lancome-usa.com. I checked with the Lancome counter at Dillard’s, Penn Square, and the sales associates are ready to start selling Oscillation first thing Wednesday morning. You can pre-order today if you want to ensure that you get a tube.

Lancome decided to introduce a limited supply of Oscillation in July after Estee Lauder debuted TurboLash ($30) with a vibrating brush that promised to thicken, lengthen and curl lashes.

If you’ve tried either Oscillation or TurboLash, share your thoughts.  Does it live up to the hype? No one wants to pay $30 for a mascara if it doesn’t deliver long, luscious lashes. And it better not smudge either.
