Epsom Salt … an affordable beauty product
High gas prices. High food prices. What’s a woman to do when she needs a gentle face mask, exfoliating skin treatment or stress-relieving soak? Epsom Salt is a cheap fix.
Epsom Salt is being touted as an effective way to slough off rough patches of skin, increase the volume in your hair and remove toxins from your body. Who knew?
Here are a few recipes for a quick, inexpensive beauty boost. For more ways to use Epsom Salt, go to www.epsomsaltcouncil.org.
For acne free skin: For a fresh, blemish-free complexion, mix 1/2 teaspoon of Epsom Salt into cleansing cream. Gently massage on skin in circular motions to remove any dry skin cells and to help unclog pores. Rinse with cool water and pat dry. Apply your favorite moisturizer with SPF 15 or higher.
For kissable lips: Use the mixture to gently scrub away dry skin on the lips and around the lip area, leaving lips rejuvenated and smooth. Mix a few tablespoons of Epsom Salt with a teaspoon of petroleum jelly. Apply to lips and rub lightly to exfoliate. This also gives lips an instant plump.
For silky smooth skin: Mix two cups of Epsom Salt with 1/4 cup of petroleum jelly and a few drops of lavender essential oil. Use the mixture to gently slough away dry patches. Exfoliate weekly to keep skin looking glowing and fresh.
For happy feet: Dissolve a half cup of the mineral into two quarts of warm water. Pour the water into a container and soak your bare feet for 15 to 20 minutes, once or twice a day. For an extra treat, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil for a refreshing scent. Then, rinse your feet off with water and dry them thoroughly. Massage the entire foot with Epsom Salt concentrating on the heels and ankles to remove any dry, rough spots.
For clean, healthy looking hair: A clean scalp is the first rule of achieving healthy hair. To remove excess oil from your hair and to keep it healthy, shiny and voluminous, add nine tablespoons of Epsom Salt to 1/2 cup of shampoo. Apply one tablespoon of the liquid to your hair when it is dry; rinse with cold water. Pour lemon juice or organic apple cider vinegar through the hair, leave on for 5-10 minutes, and then rinse.
For mind and body: For a relaxing soak, add two cups of Epsom Salt to the water in a standard-sized bathtub; soak for at least 12 minutes, three times weekly. For an extra treat, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil for a refreshing scent.

Manolo Blahnik inducted into Rodeo Drive Walk of Style
Manolo Blahnik and Lucy Liu
Lucy Liu wore her favorite black Manolos, so did Hilary Duff and China Chow, while “Mad Men” star January Jones preened in her Blahnik red pumps. They and other Hollywood fans of the fabulous shoe designer gathered on Sept. 25, in Beverly Hills to celebrate Manolo Blahnik’s induction to the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style. It’s an honor that only 11 other designers have achieved, with the stylish Spaniard joining names like Armani, Versace, Head, Ford, and Ferragamo in having a permanent plaque displayed in the heart of Rodeo Drive.

More from Steve Kemble, celebrity wedding planner
Celebrity wedding planner Steve Kemble is outrageous, hilarious and knows his stuff. I interviewed him by phone to talk about, what else, weddings and The Wedding Workshop Oct. 4-5 in Oklahoma City. Kemble lives in Dallas. He hosted the spring event and is back for a bigger and better workshop.
We chatted on and on, and I got way too much information to include in my story in Sunday’s Living section. So here are the leftovers and his thoughts on:
Wedding planners: I think more and more people are seeking out wedding planners. It’s a matter of time. It takes a lot of time to plan a wedding, and a lot of people don’t have time to invest in it.
If you’re planning a wedding, you maybe go to the florist once a year. I’m using that florist 75 times a year. I’m pretty much buying at wholesale and saving you time.
Just explore it. I think you’ll find it will save you time and money. Not that a wedding planner has to do everything single aspect of the wedding.
What to splurge on: Photography and good champagne. Food is always a good splurge, depending on the time of the day, and the honeymoon.
Food and beverage trends: Specialty drinks, lots of food stations, maybe five or six around the room, small plates, bite-size appetizers (always without onion and garlic), salad and cheese buffets, foods that are labeled. One reception offered guests mini grill cheese sandwiches with tomato soup. Food that’s easy to eat, such as lollipop food on a stick (think meatball), even lollipop drinks such as a margarita popsicle.
What makes him cringe?: I don’t like to see a mother of the bride outshine the bride, either in actions or dress style. It happens, unfortunately, a lot. It’s not advisable for the mother of the bride to be walking down the aisle in a shocking red dress. No one should be outshining the bride.
Boosey groomsman (and bridesmaids), especially if it’s an evening wedding. Keep the bridal party entertained during the day — maybe a round of golf or watching a sports game on television for the guys; spa time for the girls. On this particular day, you have to keep the wedding party under control.
Celebrity weddings: They totally set the trends. Brides ask for the same cake that was served at Eva Longoria’s wedding. When Adam Sandler got married, his dog was in the wedding and that set off a trend.
Favorite wedding to plan: A couple in their 30s who have been living together. They both have jobs and know exactly what they want. They’re grounded and paying for the wedding themselves. That’s like a dream couple.

Make up with a spritz of Evian
With all the hydrating mists available now, I sometimes forget about one of the first — Evian Brumisateur facial spray.
According to Evian, the spray increases skin hydration by 16 percent with regular use and provides better penetration of makeup products due to the mineral composition.
While a little spritz of Evian is cool and refreshing, its benefits are best when used before and after applying makeup, the company says.
To receive the full benefits, Evian suggests these steps:
1. Clean. After cleansing your face, generously spray Evian over the entire face until actually drips, wait a minute for the droplets to be absorbed, then pat the excess dry. Follow with your regular moisturizer.
2. Makeup. Apply makeup as you normally do.
3. Set. Hold the Evian canister away rom the face, mist lightly in a circular motion to set makeup in place and let air dry. Setting makeup helps it blend with the skin and gives it a natural look. It also brings out more color.
4. Repeat. Repeating throughout the day helps keep skin hydrated and refreshed.
A 5-ounce spray is $10.
Shopping for vests and cardigans
I’m putting much of my fashion budget into accessories this fall, but I am on the hunt for a great vest. I’ve always been a sucker for menswear looks.
Lauren Ralph Lauren houndstooth vest
Oh, and I want a cardigan. Not too chunky. I prefer not to add any more bulk. Maybe a sweater vest. Hmmm. Before I hit the stores, I did a quick skip online through Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom. Here’s what I found.
So, what are you wanting to add to your wardrobe this season?
Sutton Studio cashmere vest
Vertical Design two-button cardigan tunic
Free People grandpa cardigan
Tim Gunn and Gretta Monahan weigh in on Sarah Palin’s style
Everyone seems to have an opinion about vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin’s style. Here’s what Tim Gunn and Gretta Monahan of “Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style” have to say:
“You know, for me, I think she … has a look that works for the role she’s in and I get it. She’s a beautiful, beautiful woman,” Monahan said during a conference call with Gunn and reporters about the second season of the style show on Bravo.
“I definitely thought it was fun. I’ve been one of those people that would love to pull the glasses off and see the hair down. I just can’t help it. You know, I own salons and boutiques, and I would love to see her also just have a little bit of variation in her look.”
“There’s a femininity to her that seems to be very much in line with her confidence. But, sure I can’t lie. I always like to tweak everything. I’d like to see a little more fashion and style in there and maybe a little more attention spent on proportion, fit and silhouette, if I had to tweak, you know.
“After all, it is my job.”
And from Tim? “… all I can say is we should all brace ourselves for a Broadway revival of “Annie Gets Her Gun.”
