David Duchovny: he’s got the face
Actor David Duchovny is the face for Johnston & Murphy footwear and accessories. And just as the X-Files is being resurrected. What timing.
The company is in the fourth year of a campaign that was created to rejuvenate the 157-year-old brand by portraying a fresher, more dynamic and relevant image.
Iman’s transition to fall
Supermodel-turned-businesswoman Iman, who now has her own cosmetics line, says it’s easy to transition from natural summer makeup to more dramatic fall looks by keeping the summer glow alive.
She and her makeup artist Byron offer these tips:
Always use blush. Change the shade of blush depending on how much color you have and, or course, the season. Transition from summer to tall and keep color with peach shades.
Bronzer is your friend. Iman uses bronzer year-round to hide skin imperfections and keep a fresh, awake look. She loves the Iman Cosmetics Afterglow Bronzing Powder for all over color or to highlight cheekbones.
Play up your eyes. Eye shadow is the easiest way to begin transitioning into fall while still keeping a healthy glow and using minimal makeup. Colors that are hot right now such as purples and pinks warm up the face and accentuate existing color.

Essie’s new polishes
I’m a big fan of Essie polish. I met her once — yes, there really is an Essie — at an event during Fashion Week.
Essie delivers six new polishes for fall. Forever Young, a fiery tango red; Lacy Not Racy, velvety vintage burgundy; Big Spender, lush red-violet; No Boundaries, passionate plum (pictured below); Swept Off My Feet, dusky rose; and Tomboy No More, red currant truffle.
My favorite is Forever Young, at right. I used to wear red on my toenials all the time, but other colors caught my fancy a couple of years ago. I think it’s time to revisit red.
The new shades are in stores now. If you’re tired of neons and pastels, tease your nails with a color that captures the feeling of fall. At $8, it’s an inexpensive way to welcome the new season.
OKC N Style: check it out
I hope you saw the August issue of OKC N Style, which came out Thursday. There’s a fashion story on animal prints (they’re always in style, you know), a feature on Travis Neely, a rising star on the local design scene and a look at 12 wines worth the splurge. Plus much, much more.
If you didn’t get this limited-distribution glossy section with your paper, check it out online at www.okcnstyle.com.
Marsha Mason: actress and beauty maven
It may not be as hot today as it was a week ago, but you know the heat wave isn’t over yet. This is Oklahoma, after all.
What’s a girl to do when she starts feeling flushed?
To the rescue comes Marsha Mason’s Heating Highdration Mist. Yes, Marsha Mason, four-time Oscar nominee and two-time Golden Globe winner.
She created the mist, which is enriched with soothing aloe vera and aromathereputic essential oils from The Resting in the River Organic Farm.
The mist sounds perfect to combat the heat or for air travel or those times when you just need to feel refreshed and calm. It’s available in two fragrances — Lavender & Spilanthes herb and Rose & Organic St. John’s Wort. The cost: $4.25.
Marsha Mason’s beauty line (who knew?) features all natural products with certified organic herbs. She offers herbal wellness sprays and body products, too.
And here’s something you probably don’t know: Marsha Mason is an organic farmer and the chairman of the New Mexico Organic Commodities Commision.
Check out the mist and her other products at www.restingintheriver.com.
Fashion tip: flattering pieces
Some clothing styles are universally flattering on all shapes and sizes, according to the Harper’s Bazaar book “Great Style, Best Ways to Update Your Look.”
Consider these:
The wrap dress. Soft jersey fabrics can work for all body types. Twist, wrap and maneuver the material to camouflage your least favorite parts and highlight the ones you like.
A thin woman can benefit from the draping fabric and the dress’s ability to emphasize the waist. A fuller-figured woman looks great in the hourglass-enhancing silhouette and loosely falling fabric.
The black suit. Operative word is black. It hides everything.
It’s also sturdy. A well-cut, properly fitted jacket retains its shape, doesn’t stretch or squeeze and covers problem areas such as arms, stomach, hips and bottom.
Depending on what you wear underneath, the suit jacket can display just the right amount of skin around the neck and the decolletage.
The trench coat. The tailored structure hides all flaaws as does the stiff fabric.
The belt can be tied tight to definie the waist or loosely for a more casual feel. Even better, the coat goes with everything, from jeans and a T-shirt to a dress.
Wash your face, but not too often
When it’s hot and icky sticky outside, it’s understandable that you might want to wash your face more often.
Don’t do it, says Dr. Erin Welch, assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
No matter what your skin type, washing the face twice per day with a gentle cleanser is sufficent, he says.
By scrubbing or cleansing more than that, you’re actually stripping the skin of its natural oils which can lead to irritation or even more oil production. Can you say shiny face?
If you need to get rid of mid-day shine or sweat, rinse your face with tepid water only. Or tone down the shine with a light face powder.
And don’t reach for a stronger facial cleanser this time of year either.
“I tell my patients to look for the type of facial cleanser that matches the most prominent type of skin they have, be it dry, normal/combination, oily or sensitive,” he says.
Falling all over fall fashion
Fall clothes have been on my radar since February when I was in New York for the runway shows.
Oh, I pushed them to the back of mind while I wrote about spring and summer fashion, swimwear and sweat-proof makeup, but now I’m bubbling over with fall fashion story ideas.
I hope you’re ready to read about ‘em because, honestly, I’ve written about all I can write about summer clothes and makeup.
Get ready. Fall’s coming.
Sole searching
I read in today’s paper that footwear companies are cutting back on inventories in anticipation of a slow year
With higher gas and food prices, it’s likely that shoppers will make some tough decisions. Even if your budget won’t allow a new pair of shoes this season, dream along with me. These shoes are way out of my price range but it’s fun to look.
Next week I’ll check out the Nine West and Franco Sarto styles, which are more in check with my checking account.
Burberry pump with studded heel.
Burberry Trench Belt riding boot.
Kate Spade brown suede oxford and Prada slingback.
Fashion tip: get a leg up
Never wear a bold textured stocking with an ankle-strap shoe. Your legs become a geometry exercise in diagonal, vertical and horizonal lines and the effect is unflattering and too busy to look stylish and modern, according to the book “The Pocket Stylist” by Kendall Farr. Keep your legs bare or bare-looking or wear opaque tights.
