Beauty tip: faking eyelashes

bobbi-brown.jpgIf you’ve lost your lashes due to a medical condition or treatment, create the illusion of hair by double lining the eyes, says makeup artist Bobbi Brown in her book “Living Beauty.”

Using a dry eyeliner brush, apply dark powder eye shadow (dark brown, gray or charcoal) as close to the base of the lashes as possible. The line should be thick and smudgy. Repeat the process, this time with the brush slightly dampened. Use a stamping motion to draw a thinner line.

See what basking in the sun will get you? Next time you want to soak up a few rays, remember this picture. Sunscreen, anyone? How about some tinted body lotion or self-tanning cream?

Three cheers for Spanx

spanxcontrol.jpgSpanx is my friend. Love those body shapers.

Not so much the original mid-thigh shapers, called Power Panties. But I won’t be without the capri styles, which smooth and suck it all in from waist to mid-calf.  They’re great in the winter. Spanx tights are awesome, too.  Ditto the control top fishnets. And let’s not forget Bra-llelujah!, which banishes visible bra lines and back fat.

The products number more than 100 – from bras and panties to camisoles and bodysuits to hosiery and slips.  All this from a woman who cut the feet out of her pantyhose to wear with open-toe shoes and pants and decided she might be on to something.

What a success story. Sara Blakley, who founded the company, even took Spanx to the masses with her Assets  line at Target. To read Sara’s story and check out all the products, go to www.spanx.com.

Bye, bye dandruff

Dandruff isn’t a problem for me, but if it was, I’d spring for Pureology’s new DandruffScalpCure shampoo and conditioner. The products have zero sulfates and up to 2 percent pyrithione zinc which help fight scaling, itching and flaking associated with dandruff.

Another plus: the AntiFade Complex and zero sulfate formulas extend color life. That means fewer trips to your favorite colorist. Or to Wal-mart to pick up your favorite shade of Miss Clairol.

I’ve used Pureology products for several years. Sometimes I drift away, tempted by a sweet smelling lather or a hyped gel,  but I always come back — and wonder why I strayed. Probably it’s because Pureology products aren’t cheap. Neither is the new dandruff formula. A 10-ounce bottle is $35; 2 ounces, $10.

Designer Tracy Reese slips into Keds

tracy.jpgDesigner Tracy Reese will bring her plenty by Tracy Reese contemporary line to Keds in spring 2009.

Reese and Keds will create several styles, including peep-toe wedge sneakers, skimmers and ballet flats.  The shoe silhouettes are inspired by the exotic designs from Reese’s plenty by Tracy Reese Spring 2009 collection, which will shown on the runway in September.

Reese is known for her use of interesting prints, embellishments and colors, and the shoes are expected to be a nice complement to Keds’ classic style. Reese’s collection is expected to offer customers a new take on their favorite Keds styles.

“Keds has a unique feminine aesthetic coupled with fun whimsical designs,” says Reese. “I am thrilled to collaborate with such an iconic brand and excited about fusing the plenty by

Tracy Reese eclectic and wordly designs with casual footwear.”

plenty by Tracy Reese for Keds will be sold at www.keds.com, Tracy Reese boutiques and select department and specialty stores. The collection, which will arrive in stores in February, will retail for $65 to $80.

Getting a jump start on fall shopping

coat.jpgI’m sitting here wishing I could find more fall clothes in the stores.

Yes, it’s 100 degrees, or close to it, and I’m thinking about tweeds and plaids, hats and opaque tights, boots and coats.
I’m gathering clothes for our September OKC N Style section, a glossy that touches on all things style. We want to wow readers with our fall fashion push, but it’s still July and most of what’s in the stores is lightweight and summery. As it should be.

In these uncertain times,  more and more people are buying closer to season and retailers don’t want racks of winter clothes next to end-of-summer clearance. That doesn’t mean there’s no fall clothing from which to choose. But there would be more next week and the week after.

Our section doesn’t publish until Sept.5, when many of us will be ready to ditch those summer whites and reach for — or at least think about — clothes with more substance.

I’m starting early.

Beauty tip: eye opener

Makeup artist Bobbi Brown says applying concealer on the holllow sides of the nose (the spot next to the eye socket) will open up your eyes and make them look bright and awake.

Fashion tip: Bag it

Make sure your handbag goes with your size, says “The Lucky Shopping Manual.”

If you’re a big woman, a tiny bag is not the best choice. It’s more flattering to carry a larger style. However, the reverse doesn’t always hold true. A small woman can look cool even with a big bag.
