Beauty tips for the week
Actress Kate Walsh of “Private Practice”
Let’s start off the week with a little beauty advice from Sergio Lopez-Rivera, the professional makeup artist who transforms the leading ladies on television’s “Private Practice.”
GET GLOWING. Cameras or not, it all starts with a fabulous complexion and healthy-looking skin which Lopez-Rivera achieves by first hydrating the skin with toner and moisturizer. Then he mixes a liquid highlighter into foundation and works it into the skin.
“I pay special attention to cheekbones, forehead, bridge of nose and chin since that’s where a glow will provide an overall feeling of radiance and illumination, which translates just as well on set as it does in real life,” Lopez-Rivera said.
EYEBROW OBSESSION. “If there’s one area of the face that I’m obsessive about, it’s the brows. The right brow shape can completely change the face by either opening it up, helping someone look younger or defining a look.”
Lopez-Rivera instructs all women to, at least once, get a professional brow shaping with a trusted expert. Once the desired shape is created, he recommends maintaining the shape at home but with one stipulation: “You can’t use cheap tweezers. It’s critical to use high-quality tweezers to maintain the shape and prevent ingrowns.”
He favors Rubis by Mehaz tweezers and uses them exclusively. They are hand-crafted in Switzerland and come with a lifetime guarantee and free sharpening.
“This is one of my can’t-live-without, worth-the-investment, must-have beauty products,” he said.
LIP SERVICE. The skin on our lips are extremely thin and one of the first areas to show dryness. “I tell everyone I work with to exfoliate their lips regularly,” he said.
Lopez-Rivera suggests buying a very soft bristle toothbrush to use on lips nightly.
“It’s important not to scrub the lips hard,” he said, “but to move back and forth gently with warm water. After lips feel plump and exfoliated, slather them with a highly emolliating lip treatment product with healing ingredients.”
He advises against petroleum-based products since they can actually have the adverse effect and dry out the lips.

I like ChapStick Moisturizing. It’s cheap and good, especially this time of year. Another one is Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm. I usually have one of these in my bathroom and in my purse.
My all-time favorite, though, is Fresh Sugar Lip. It’s a bit pricey — about $22 — but it makes my lips feel like butter.
