Welcome to the Jungle – review

Welcome to the Jungle (The Dresden Files)By far the channel I miss most, since downgrading our cable, is the SciFi Channel.  I would say Lifetime but some wonderful genius includes that in the basic package.  Anyway, one of the best shows on SciFi was The Dresden Files.  It was funny, imaginative and featured good looking people – that’s really all I require.  That led me too the novels. I tried one and enjoyed it but in a rare twist I actually preferred the television show.  So when the graphic version, Welcome to the Jungle, came out I thought it would be a perfect medium for this story.  I was right!

In this stand alone volume (the action takes place before the novel Storm Front) Harry Dresden, Wizard for Hire, is called out to the Chicago Zoo to investigate a supsicious murder.  What he discovers is vicious animals under mind control, a very scared pretty zoo keeper and an anxious Chicago P.D.  The artwork is pretty standard but it works and I have a feeling the artist, Adryn Siaf, will become more comfortable as time goes on.

All in all, the novel reads a lot like an episode.  It’s funny, crazy stuff happens, then it wraps up nicely.  This will definitely appeal to both fans of the show and the novels, even if they aren’t graphic novel readers.  If you’ve never seen the Dresden Files, this is a great introduction to the world.  Harry is young and just beginning to get a handle on his job.  It was an enjoyable read, now I just wish the show would come back!!!
