The Bat. Man.

Batman RIP coverThe guys over at Nerdage have an update on the Batman ‘is he or isn’t he’ issue.  So is Bruce Wayne really dead?  Uh, of course not.  But it looks like we do get a storyline written by Neil Gaiman!!!

Should Bruce Wayne die?  Has he outlived his purpose?  The Bat has certainly taken him over and maybe it’s time to erase that particular alter ego and start with someone new.  There’s all kinds of speculation with Dick Grayson/Nightwing at the head of the pack.  Which…boring.  I’m not sure who I would like to see take over but one of the Birds of Prey, like Black Canary, might be interesting.  Who do you want in the cape and pointy ears?

Yes, Bruce Wayne as Batman will probably return. But if someone has to step up and take the mantle, who better than Nightwing? He has been in the game for so long he grew up and got a new name! He knows all the secrets and Ins n’ outs of being a Batman. I wouldn’t feel satisfied if they gave it to someone not related to the Bat-world, as in a Bird of Prey. Plus, Black Canary is way too busy with the JLA to take on a new identity. Yes, Bruce Wayne will return someday, but wouldn’t the Bat be safe staying in the family with Dick Grayson until then?

Yes! He would be totally safe in Grayson’s hands which would be totally boring! Why kill of Bruce Wayne (or critically injure him or make him a zombie or whatever) if you are just going to have things continue pretty much as they were? Though I bet he gets a better suit…

Black Canary has taken too much **** from the JLA lately anyway with all their orders and rules. She’s close to Barbara Gordon right? So that’s a good connection to the Batworld.

Or maybe they should just let Gotham fester batfree for awhile? What would happen then?

When you’ve been around as long as me (yuk! yuk!), it’s a little disconcerting to see how convoluted the DC Universe has become. Since I jumped back on the comics bandwagon two years ago, I discovered all kinds of disturbing storylines that were played out during my absence: Superman died, Ray Palmer’s (AKA The Atom) wife is a murderer, Hal Jordan (the Green Lantern of my youth) died and became some kind of demonic monster, Barry Allen (AKA The Flash) is gone, etc. Well, these superheroes are iconic and with us forever, and I know it’s a challenge for the authors to keep coming up with new storylines. Still, it makes me a little hesitant to jump back into traditional DC Comics. I typically go for the more modern, more demented comics of today’s age. Still, a storyline by Gaiman may indeed make me pick up a Batman comic again, even *if* Bruce is dead.

Sadie and Rod, keep me posted and let me know if I need to dive in!
