OPUBCO Studios is completely Mac-based. We edit on Mac machines. I use a MacBook Pro to edit, taking it home and in the field. An iPhone is constantly by my side. The iPad is a marvelous device, even bought my wife one after we both used mine so often.

So I’m a huge Apple fan, because their stuff works and its intuitive. Seems to make a lot of sense for the creative peeps.

Steve Jobs – RIP. The world lost an important human. I wonder how often you can say that?

Cheap cameras produce great video

And by cheap, I mean in the $100-$500 ballpark.

I use Vado and Flip cams all the time as b-roll and bumper cams. They produce interesting cut away shots because you can stash them anywhere for a different perspective.

I’ve also used my iPhone 4′s camera as a main and b-roll cam for similar use.

We don’t have any Go Pro cams in our arsenal at OPUBCO. But here’s an example of strapping (or gaffe taping) a cam to the bottom of a skateboard. The result is a very low to the ground effect. And at least two destroyed cams. But a great video. Great idea.

Good Morning America picks up our iPhone video

Some motorists had a rough start to the work week, running over metal that had arisen from the pavement on the Belle Isle bridge near I-44 and NW Expressway in Oklahoma City. Officials blamed the incident on the bridge’s age (comforting, huh?) and extreme heat. I took my Jeep Wrangler for a cruise of the area around lunch Monday and shot the above video with my iPhone 4.

Good Morning America saw the video, called us and asked to use the footage on Tuesday morning’s show. I’m sure they used about 5 seconds.

Soapbox time: you don’t need expensive cameras, just use the camera with you. I had a Canon 7D and Sony HVR A1U with me. But the iPhone was the most practical for that shot. The still frame of the worker on the highway turned out to be the money shot. I use my Vado cameras all the time, especially as bumper or b-roll cams.

At the end of the day, the video you have is better than the video you don’t have.

I’m a big iPhone fan. A big Apple fan for that matter. I’m very ready to update my iPhone – I don’t have the iPhone 4.

And AT&T drops calls right and left. And right. And left.

But I’m not sure I’ll switch from AT&T to Verizon. More details are forthcoming about the Verizon data rates. And that may determine some decisions. Seems like the pricing will be very similar to the existing AT&T rates.

How to track a lost iPhone and iPad

My colleague Eric Boehs’ worst fears were realized Tuesday.

He got to work. But didn’t have his iPhone. Nor his newly purchased iPad.

Surely he hadn’t left them on top of his car when leaving for work.

Surely he hadn’t put them into a box while loading up trash for “big trash” day in Oklahoma City.

Good thing Eric had Mobile Me so he could track his missing iProperty as it moved around Oklahoma City.

Hooters. Motels. An afternoon chasing down the missing iHardware, with videographer Kyle Roberts capturing the drama.

UPDATE: Last night, Gizmodo picked up the story. We also uploaded the video to YouTube and it’s beginning to take on a life of its own.

The Gizmodo article, by Rosa Golijan, has had numerous responses and posts as people read and watch the story, and then chime in.

The YouTube version has had about 5,000 views.

The video received 3,907 views on NewsOK yesterday to rank as the site’s second-most viewed video. And it wasn’t posted until late Wednesday afternoon, and not promoted to the home page lineup until the evening. It was shared on Facebook and Twitter throughout the evening.

It’s received several hundred views as of early Thursday morning on NewsOK.
